    Notes: Abstract Results of flow visualization experiments of an impulsively accelerated plane interface between air and SF6 are reported. The shock tube used for the experiments has a larger test section than in previous experiments. The larger extent of uniform test flow relative to nonuniform boundary-layer flow permits unambiguous interpretation of flow-visualization photographs, and the influence of shock-wave/boundary-layer interactions is no longer dominant. The strong wall vortex observed in previous studies is not observed in these experiments. It is found that the thin membrane, which forms the initially plane interface, has a significant influence on the initial growth rate of the interface thickness. However, the measured growth rates after the first reflected shock are independent of membrane configuration and are in good agreement with analytical predictions.

    Notes: Abstract This project develops an electro-optical board technology based on the combination of discrete wiring and glass optical fibers. Such a board provides optical parallel interconnects. Meaning that 16 optical fibers will be led simultaneously in and out the board from the incomming links to the transmitter and receiver modules mounted on this board. This technology is expected to fulfil the needs of next generation broadband exchanges concerning high data rate flow. As the ligning-up of the fibers requires severe dimensional tolerances, we have to enter the field of the micromechanica. The most critical parts will therefore be manufactured with the LIGA technique. The first generation of models produced and tested by Alcatel Bell Telephone proved that this concept is perfectly feasible.

    Notes: Abstract To determine regional stress and strain distributions in rabbit ventricular myocardium, an anatomically detailed finite element model was used to solve the equations of stress equilibrium during passive filling of the left ventricle. Computations were conducted on a scalable parallel processing computer and performance was found to scale well with the number of processors used, so that stimulations previously requiring approximately 60 min were completed in just over 5 min. Epicardial strains from the model analysis showed good agreement (RMSE=0.007332) with experimental measurements when material properties were chosen such that cross fiber strain was more heterogeneous than fiber strain, which is also consistent with experimental observations in other species. © 2000 Biomedical Engineering Society.     Notes: The Kantorovich theorem is virtually the only known sufficiency condition for convergence of Newton's method on a set of non-linear equations. The theorem gives very conservative bounds and is difficult to apply. In this paper the power system load flow problem is solved by Newton's method, and a sufficiency condition for the convergence of the iterations on this particular problem is given. The criterion relates to a condition number defined on the Jacobian matrix associated with the non-linear equations. Computational feasibility is considered and the merits of its use are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract We present a new approach to cardiovascular analysis based on a well-known signal processing technique, namely, the frequency subband decomposition. The subbands are chosen in accordance with physiological standards: (1) 0–0.04 Hz, (2) 0.04–0.15 Hz, (3) 0.15–0.4 Hz. It is shown that such a pre-processing drastically improves the accuracy of the analysis and introduces a new direction in the understanding of the relationships between cardiovascular signals. © 1998 Biomedical Engineering Society.     Notes: Abstract Several noninvasive measurement methods are used for evaluation of metabolic disease. Single-photon (125I) scans of the peripheral skeleton are useful in some diseases but are ineffective in osteoporosis (even on the distal radius or os calcis) because they cannot predict spinal or femoral density. Also, peripheral measurements show high percentages of false negatives, that is many patients with fractures have normal peripheral density. Dual-photon (153Gd) scans of the spine, femur, and total skeleton are precise and accurate (2% error) and provide direct measurements of bone strength at fracture sites. This gives the best discrimination of abnormality and the most sensitive monitoring. Quantitative computed computed tomography (QCT) allows measurement of the spine but not the critical proximal femur area. QCT has a large accuracy error because (a) the limited are measured (under 5 cm3) fails to represent the total vertebral body, (b) technical errors and (c) variable fat and osteoid influence the results.
