Notes: A pulsed-gas jet with interesting properties has been developed. A typical pressure obtained at the output of this pulsed-gas jet is 25 Torr for a backing pressure of 150 Torr. At a repetition rate of 10 Hz, the background pressure stays below 1.5×10−4 Torr. Laser-induced fluoresence measurements permit one to determine the pressure and the divergence of the gas jet accurately.

Notes: A statistical model to describe the late time chaotic behavior of a Rayleigh–Taylor unstable interface was introduced by Sharp and Wheeler [Physica D 12, 3 (1984); (private communication)]. Here the focus is on effective computations using this model and the comparison of the model with experiment. The numerical solution of the model shows that the height of the mixing layer, in which the bubbles of the light fluid penetrate the heavy fluid, is in a constant acceleration. This result agrees with the experiments of Read [Physica D 12, 45 (1984)].

Notes: In various areas of China, the fourth largest sunflower-producing country in the world, 25 sunflower diseases have been reported: 19 caused by fungi, one virus disease and five caused by different species of broomrape. Their geographical distribution and economic significance are discussed. Fungi are the most prevalent disease causing agents in every region. More species of broomrape have been recorded in China than in any other country in the world. Orobanche coerulescens has not previously been reported to attack sunflower but is an important cause of disease in China. The number of diseases recorded differs among the regions, with 14 in North-east China, 11 each in North, North-west and South-west China, 10 in East China and six in Central and South China. This distribution broadly corresponds to the intensity of sunflower production. Only Puccinia helianthi and Septoria helianthi are reported in all the regions; 64% of the diseases are restricted to one or two regions. Alternaria helianthi, Septoria helianthi, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and Orobanche coerulescens are considered to be the most important, causing 10-50% losses in yield, and even crop failure in some areas in some years. Much work remains to be done on disease control to promote the development of sunflower production in China.

Notes: Summary One fertile and two male-sterile diploid plants were regenerated from the same callus after two cycles of protoplast culture from fertile Nicotiana sylvestris. Genetic studies indicated that the male-sterile trait was under cytoplasmic control. Progenies of each regenerated plant possessed different mitochondrial (mt) DNA restriction patterns. Both cms protoclone types were characterized by specific mtDNA deletions. In addition, a 40 kD mitochondrially encoded polypeptide is lacking in the cms plants.

Notes: Abstract We report the first experimental study of the NMR lineshape anisotropy in the orientationally ordered cubic phase of a D2 single crystal. The para-D2 concentration covered the range 0.72〈X〈0.82. The observed line shapes were obtained by means of Fourier transform techniques from the solid echoes recorded with a pulsed NMR spectrometer operating at 5.9 MHz. Theoretical line shapes and their second moments forp-D2 (with angular momentumJ=1 and spinI=1) and foro-D2 (withJ=0, I=2) were calculated as a function of the applied field direction from the theory by A. B. Harris. Good agreement was obtained for all directions, provided that, just as for solid H2, a Gaussian function for the distribution of molecular axial alignment was assumed with an rms spreading angle of ∼6 deg forX=0.77. No change in the anisotropy of the second moment in the disordered phase was detected between the initial (hcp) crystal and after repeated thermal cyclings through the martensitic transition. This result implies no change in the orientation of the plane for the sliding nets during repeated passages through the transition. Furthermore, we report measurements of the longitudinal relaxation time for bothp-D2 ando-H2 versusT over the temperature range 0.5〈T〈3.5 K. The complex behavior reported previously for both H2 and D2 was confirmed. Measurements of the relaxation times as a function of the applied field direction in the ordered phase at 1.2 K showed no anisotropy within experimental error, and this result is discussed in the light of predictions by Hardy and Berlinsky. Finally, the polarization of theJ=0 molecules is studied as a function of the concentrationX of theJ=1 molecules and their state of orientational order over a wide range ofX andT in the ordered and disordered states. The results are compared with predictions of A. B. Harris and with previous data on polycrystalline samples.

Notes: Abstract The polymerization of ε-caprolactone(CL) with tetraphenylporphyrin(TPP)-diethylaluminium chloride(Et2AlCl) or Et2AlCl as initiator in toluene at 80° C gove a polymer with narrow molecular weight distribution. The effects of the temperature and the concentration of catalyst on the polymerization rate and the molecular weight of polymer were studied.
