Notes: The formation and equilibrium of a high β tokamak in the Columbia High Beta Tokamak (HBT) (Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research 1986, in press) is documented using magnetic probes as the principle diagnostic. The formation from a toriodal field stabilized Z pinch is simulated with 2-D resistive magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations. From the measurement of the magnetic field by high-impedence internal magnetic probes, the poloidal flux, toroidal current, and safety factor are calculated. In addition, the plasma position and cross-sectional shape are determined. The tokamak has a major radius of about 0.24 m, a minor radius of about 0.05 m, and a toroidal current density of about 106 A/m2. The high β tokamak plasma is observed to have an outward shift in major radius of both the magnetic center and the peak of the toroidal current density. The magnetic center moves inward in major radius after 20–30 μsec, presumably because the plasma maintains major radial equilibrium as its pressure decreases because of the radiation of impurity atoms.

Notes: Abstract 12 MeV electron beams with different doses of 4, 8, 16 and 32 Mrad from LINAC designed by Nanjing University have been used to irradiate polypropylene films and their structures studied by X-ray diffraction afterwards. We have found that the electron irradiation does not change the total crystallinity of polypropylene but greatly inflences its crystal structure with increase of β phase and decrease of α phase as irradiation dose increases (within 16 Mrad). However, it is unexpected that the structure of irradiated sample with 32 Mrad are similar to that of the control sample. This behavior has also been observed in positron annihilation lifetime measurements.

Notes: Abstract Contamination and adsorption of trace elements during storage of natural water samples in polyethylene containers have been studied. Variations of concentrations of 29 elements in pH=1.5 natural water samples stored in polyethylene bottles for 15 and 30 days respectively were determined by the method of freeze-drying preconcentration and NAA. The percentage adsorption loss of radioactive indicators60Co,124Sb,65Zn,75Se,134Cs and46Sc in the pH=1.5–8.0 reservoir water, tap water and distilled water stored for 1–2 months were also determined. The optimized storage condition for natural water is obtained.

Notes: Abstract We show that the maximum principle holds for optimal periodic control problems governed by functional differential equations under a Lipschitz condition on the value functional. Generalizations to other boundary conditions are also considered.
