Description: Using radiochemical methods, the authors have measured the distribution of uranium, thorium, radium, polonium and protactinium isotopes from the top and bottom sides of the a manganese nodule from Station 20 of the PLEIADES Mn7601 campaign. This "apple" shaped nodule (6.5x3.0 cm) was laying on a bed of siliceous ooze (see illustrations). Successive thin layers of the nodule were carefully scraped from the surface of the measured area with a sharp surgical blade. All samples reduced to powder were air-dried at 110°C for at least two hours before analysis. The relative gross alpha activities from each layer were assayed by Alpha spectrometry using a thick-source counting in a scintillation counter.

Description: The authors have selected for analysis a manganese nodule from Station 20 of the PLEIADES Mn7601 campaign. This "apple" shaped nodule (6.5x3.0 cm) was laying on a bed of siliceous ooze (see illustrations). Electron microprobe measurements were made on the same section as that used in the alpha-track studies. Prior to the microprobe analyses, however, the nodule slab was highly polished to reduce surface relief A MAC electron microprobe was employed and the electron beam was focused to a dmmeter of about 2 micrometers using 15 kV and 300 mA.

The chemical composition of (1) the top 3-5 mm, (2) the bottom 3-5 mm, and (3) the bulk nodule from a section of Mn7601-20-2 adjacent to the portion used for the radiochemical studies was determined by atomic absorption and neutron activation analysis.

Description: The rate at which hydrothermal precipitates accumulate, as measured by the accumulation rate of manganese, can be used to identify periods of anomalous hydrothermal activity in the past. From a preliminary study of Sites 597 and 598, four periods prior to 6 Ma of anomalously high hydrothermal activity have been identified: 8.5 to 10.5 Ma, 12 to 16 Ma, 17 to 18 Ma, and 23-to-27 Ma. The 18-Ma anomaly is the largest and is associated with the jump in spreading from the fossil Mendoza Ridge to the East Pacific Rise, whereas the 23-to-27-Ma anomaly is correlated with the birth of the Galapagos Spreading Center and resultant ridge reorganization. The 12-to-16-Ma and 8.5-to-10.5-Ma anomalies are correlated with periods of anomalously high volcanism around the rim of the Pacific Basin and may be related to other periods of ridge reorganization along the East Pacific Rise. There is no apparent correlation between periods of fast spreading at 19°S and periods of high hydrothermal activity. We thus suggest that periods when hydrothermal activity and crustal alteration at mid-ocean ridges are the most pronounced may be periods of large-scale ridge reorganization.

Description: Manganese nodules and crusts were sampled from box cores collected at the Manganese Nodule Program (MANOP) site H in the Eastern Equatorial Pacific ocean. For majority of site H nodule bottoms have smooth, lustrous patches, whereas nodule tops are generally rough and dull. The top/bottom orientation of each manganese nodule was labeled during curation. Most of the nodutes studied were cut in haIf, and a 3-5 mm layer was scraped from nodule tops and bottoms. The chemical analysis was performed on both top and bottom sides as well as on the whole specimen. Atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) was used folIowing complete dissolution with HF and aqua regia in teflon bombs.

Description: Manganese nodules were sampled from box cores collected at the Manganese Nodule Program (MANOP) site S (Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone) and site R (Murray Fracture Zone) in the Central Pacific ocean. For these sites nodule tops are smoother than nodule bottoms, which commonly have a gritty texture.
