Notes: Summary After partial ablation of the superior colliculus (tectum) in neonatal hamsters, the whole extent of the visual field comes to be represented in a compressed map on the remaining tectal fragment. However, the total volume of tectal tissue in which retinotectal fibers arborize is less than normal. These observations suggest that the retinal ganglion cells which arborize in this reduced volume might arise throughout the whole extent of the retina but be fewer in number than normal. Alternatively, the ganglion cells which project to the tectum might be normal in number but reduced in terminal arbor size. To distinguish between these possibilities, we have used tectal injections of horseradish peroxidase to label retinal ganglion cells which project to the tectum. The numbers of labelled cells per mm2 of retina were counted in selected regions. In hamsters with small lesions, which left 80–85% of the tectum intact, the density of labelled retinal ganglion cells was normal. However, in hamsters with larger lesions, the density of labelled cells was significantly lower than normal.

Notes: Abstract The properties of ion channels in patches from the luminal membrane of cultured monolayers of type II alveolar epithelial cells from adult rat lung have been studied. In excised patches, prepared as described to yield the “outside-out” configuration (with cesium ions in the bathing solutions to suppress currents arising from potassium channels), we observed anion-selective channels with a conductance of 350–400 pS, and burst lengths lasting seconds. When patches were bathed in solutions with equal chloride concentrations, channels opened and closed spontaneously at membrane voltages close to zero, but tended to close when the potential was shifted by ±10 mV, particularly in the negative direction. Other anions could pass through these channels with a permeability sequence of I(1.5)〉Br(1.02)=〉Cl(1.00)〉NO3(0.9)〉gluconate(0.6) but there was a very low permeability for sodium (P Na/P Cl=0.015±0.006). Calcium ions reduced channel conductance. The channels probably have a role to play in salt absorption by this epithelium, but insufficient information is available about how sodium crosses it for the role of the anion channels in transport to be defined with confidence.

Notes: Abstract During the last year, two earthquakes caused a great loss in human lives and much property damage in Algeria and Italy. These events raise the question of whether the engineering seismology methods currently in use are adequate. It can be shown that the seismic input parameters for planning and design of structures in earthquake-prone areas may be deduced from experience. The development of seismic response spectra on a statistical basis offers the possibility of making assumptions about future seismic loads taking the regional seismicity and the local underground situation into account.

Notes: Abstract A simple, non-invasive, non-radioactive liverfunction test is proposed. After an oral dose of 3 mg 15N-methacetin per kilogram body mass, the kinetics of 15N excretion via urine were characterized by the quotient of the amounts of 15N excreted in two successive urine samples (Q value). The stable nitrogen isotope 15N was found to be an excellent and easily detectable indicator of the sum of all methacetin metabolites present in urine. Alterations in the nature or ratio of methacetin metabolites due to liver diseases could not be found. From the investigation of 11 men, 3 pregnant women and 15 children, a clear difference was observed in Q values of healthy persons and patients suffering from liver-cell-activity diseases. The discriminating power of our new liver-function test is shown to be equivalent to that of the 14CO2 breath test.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The variation of state in a gas with constant mass inside a cylinder closed by a moving piston is considered. The piston velocity is assumed to be very small compared with the sound velocity in the gas; the piston stroke may be of the same order of magnitude as the length of the cylinder. The problem is governed by two time scales with different orders of magnitude; a cumulative effect due to local perturbations of the sound velocity has to be taken into account. Therefore, the problem has been solved by a simultaneous application of the method of multiple scaling and the analytical characteristics method. The quasistatic approximation is recovered from the condition that secular terms in the results for the second order flow quantities have to vanish. Then the second order solutions are uniquely determined without recourse to the third order equations. Multiply reflected shock waves are found by using Pfriem's formula.

Notes: Abstract Stable isotopes, such as 13C, should be substituted for the long-lived radionuclide 14C in the 14C breath test when doing liver function tests in children and pregnant women. For comparison 13C, 15N-methacetin and 14C-methacetin were synthesized as suitable diagnostic agents. Methods are described for the measurement of 14C and 13C in the breath. After oral administration of labelled methacetin to healthy subjects and patients with liver diseases a good correspondence between 13C- and 14C-measurements in the same subject on the one hand, and a good discrimination between controls and patients on the other hand were shown. Findings with regard to 14C measurements in urine are discussed supporting the supposed advantage of 13C-methacetin over 14C-methacetin application.

Notes: Abstract Respiration, ammonia and phosphate excretion experiments were performed with planula larvae ofAurelia aurita (Scyphozoa) from Kiel Fjord, Baltic Sea, in summer 1983. The mean respiration measured was 3.22 nl O2 ind−1 h−1 (at ∼ 20 °C). Excretion experiments revealed average values of 11.41 pM NH4-N ind−1, and 0.92 pM PO4-P ind−1h−1, respectively. The atomic C:N:P ratio of excretion products was 133:10:1. The O:N ratio of 25:1 and O:P ratio of 313:1 point to a lipid-carbohydrate-oriented catabolism of theAurelia larvae. On the basis of experimental results and of biomass determinations, the maximal survival period of the non-feeding free swimming planula stage was calculated. Typically, the value lies in the range of some days to one week.
