Notes: Summary The incidence of galactorrhea in an unselected group of 5597 outpatients of our gynaecological department was 0.89%. Only one patient had amenorrhea simultaneously (0.02%). There is no age dependency of galactorrhea during the period of sexual maturity (between the age of 20 and 50). A few cases can be observed in the postmenopause. The percentage of galactorrhea ocouring after a previous pregnancy is extremely small. Based upon the chemical analysis of secretions from galactorrhea and of normal human breast milk it is obvious that the two fluids are not identical. Irregularities of the menstrual cycles are present mainly in the form of monophasic cycles. There is a high incidence of pathological fasting plasma glucose concentrations (approx. 20%). An attempt is made to detect the different causes for galactorrhea. In more than 50% of the patients morphological alterations of the mammary tissue can be found. Six times there were intracanalicular papillomas. A procedure for the diagnosis of an uncomplicated galactorrhea is suggested.

Notes: Summary In a patient with typical features of Cushing's disease, repeated ambulant determinations of plasma cortisol showed normal values with 16 to 24 µg/100 ml. The entire analysis of the circadian variations of plasma cortisol under standardized conditions led to the diagnosis of hypercorticism. Compared with 2 healthy subjects the patient's curve is set at a higher level. Physiological, quiet periods of cortisol secretion in late day-time do not occur. In accord to the normal, we find great variations of plasma cortisol in this case of Cushing's syndrome due to bilateral adrenal hyperplasia. The diagnostic value of plasma cortisol determinations at short term intervals in differentiating the various forms of hypercorticism is discussed.

Description: SUMMARY We propose a class of spherical wavelet bases for the analysis of geophysical models and for the tomographic inversion of global seismic data. Its multiresolution character allows for modelling with an effective spatial resolution that varies with position within the Earth. Our procedure is numerically efficient and can be implemented with parallel computing. We discuss two possible types of discrete wavelet transforms in the angular dimension of the cubed sphere. We describe benefits and drawbacks of these constructions and apply them to analyse the information in two published seismic wave speed models of the mantle, using the statistics of wavelet coefficients across scales. The localization and sparsity properties of wavelet bases allow finding a sparse solution to inverse problems by iterative minimization of a combination of the ℓ 2 norm of the data residuals and the ℓ 1 norm of the model wavelet coefficients. By validation with realistic synthetic experiments we illustrate the likely gains from our new approach in future inversions of finite-frequency seismic data.
