Abstract:
Your treatment of J.H. Tatsch's letter in February EOS concerning misuse of rheology for rheidity left much to be desired from several points of view. In the first place, I disagree that rheidity is jargon. Jargon is the substitution of an unfamiliar term for a familiar one, as when a meteorologist uses ‘lapse rate’ for ‘temperature gradient’ or a physician describes a sore joint as ‘arthritis.’ But rheidity is a precisely defined term with no short synonym.
