Notes: Summary An increase in total urinary neopterin was observed in 12 of 13 patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), seven of 13 patients with lymphadenopathy, one of six healthy homosexual males, seven of ten adult patients with staphylococcal pneumonia, 11 of 12 children with viral infections, four of seven children with bacterial infections, and 12 of 13 children with various immune defects. Extremely high values of total urinary neopterin and monapterin were observed in severely ill patients with AIDS and those with familial hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis. Neopterin excretion was normal in two AIDS patients with Kaposi's sarcoma, but without opportunistic infections at that time. On reexamination of one of these patients later on, elevated neopterin values were noted. Parallel increases in neopterin and monapterin were found, whereas biopterin was usually normal. The increase in total neopterin was mainly due to 7,8-dihydroneopterin and was accompanied by an increase in 3′-hydroxysepiapterin. Increased neopterin in urine is assumed to reflect the increase in GTP pool and GTP cyclohydrolase I activity as observed in stimulated monocytes. Thus, neopterin, as a measure of the activation of the nonspecific cellular immune system, may be used diagnostically to detect allograft rejection after transplantations and to follow-up HTLV-III positive patients.

Description / Table of Contents: Directed Synthesis of Translationally Isomeric [3]-Catenanes1)In a multi-step reaction sequence the tetrahydroxymetacyclophane 12c is synthesized. Acetalisation with 1,25-dichloro-13-pentacosanone followed by nitration and reduction afforded the diamine 13c. By cyclization of this compound in 2-pentanol with sodium carbonate and sodium iodide under high dilution conditions the monomeric products 16, 17, and 18 are obtained in yields of 21.4, 7.7, and 0.9%, respectively. On the basis of mass, 13C NMR and 1H NMR spectra the structure of these compounds is discussed. Starting from the precatenane 16 the [3]-catenanes 25a, b,c and 26a, b, c are obtained in a multi-step reaction sequence. The structure of these compounds is confirmed by mass, 13C NMR, and 1H NMR spectroscopic investigations.

Description / Table of Contents: Directed Synthesis of Catenanes, XIII. Structure of Bis-diansa CompoundsCyclization of diamine 1 under high dilution conditions afforded compound 2 with bis-diansa structure as the main product. The two bridged cis-trans isomeric compounds 8 and 13 could be isolated as byproducts. The structure of these compounds was determined by mass spectrometry and confirmed by preparing the tetraacetates 4 and 10. Rupture of the bonds between the aromatic nuclei and the bridged system in compound 2 resulted in the formation of the 22-membered macroheterocycle 6. In an analogous manner the 44-membered macroheterocycle 12 was prepared from one of the bridged compounds (8 or 13).

Description / Table of Contents: Thermolysis of Acetoxy-alkylbenzene and Hydroxy-alkylbenzene DerivativesThe thermolysis of long chain acetoxy-alkylbenzene and hydroxy-alkylbenzene derivatives at 340-350°C affords, probably via a radical reaction, products in which acetoxy or hydroxy groups and/or alkyl residues are substituted by hydrogen (tables 1, 2). The yields vary with type, number, and position of substituents on the benzene ring. The thermolysis of hydroxydialkylbenzene derivatives 14 and 20 gives in addition hydroxy-triaklylbenzene derivatives formed by transfer of alkyl radicals.

Notes: Pressure pulsations in hydraulic systems, generated by reciprocating pumps, can cause serious problems with regard to plant safety and reliability. In particular, fatigue problems arise in high-pressure piping systems. The available knowledge is not sufficient for an accurate computation of pressure peaks in the piping of reciprocating pumps. A number of calculation models are available which, however, neglect both fluid compressibility and friction. This contribution presents a calculation method which allows a precise modelling of various pump installations. Comparison of calculated and experimental data shows a good agreement and provides a validation of the computational model.

Notes: A nonlinear finite element model for the static analysis of football helmets is developed as a first step in a methodology for the mathematical modeling of helmets. Polycarbonate and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene are considered as the shell material for the helmet. Such a methodology can be used to predict helmet response to loading and impact and can be incorporated in a computer program studying injuries caused by helmeted head collisions in football. Numerical results in terms of force-deflection curves, maximum stresses, and work of deformation are given. The influence of the polymeric material forming the helmet shell on energy absorption is studied. The effect of the internal padding material and suspension system is also considered.

Notes: Wear of automatic pump valves by abrasive suspensions. In pumping of abrasive suspensions with reciprocating displacement pumps against high pressures, the pump valves prove to be subject to serious wear. Wear of the piston seal can usually be avoided by washing or by separating membranes. Pump valves are fitted with elastic or rigid seals. To resist corrosion and temperature effects, frequently the only possible approach is to finish them in metallic or carbide materials. The major kinds of wear are demonstrated by a tribological study. The rates of wear found for a real valve model with a high pressure experimental setup depend upon the pressure and frequency of reciprocation. A hardness-dependent region of instability exists where wear scoring arises. The volume wear rate for various arrangements of materials and abrasive particles exhibits a crest/trough nature. A design strategy and construction aspects are considered and compared with practical experience.

Notes: The pyrrolidide group is, in contrast to the carboxy- and ester groups, capable of inducing strong electron impact fragmentation at the b̃- and γ-bonds in complicated alicyclic and aliphatic compounds. The fragments so formed allow certain conclusions concerning the structure in the neighbourhood of the functional group.
