    Notes: Background:  Beta-catenin, an E-cadherin-associated protein involved in cell–cell adhesion and signaling, has been hypothesized to translocate to the nucleus and activate transcription in several human cancers, including oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCC).Methods:  In the present study, we analyzed the subcellular localization of beta-catenin in cultures of human oral normal and malignant (cell lines SCC15 and SCC25) keratinocytes and in 24 frozen samples of oral squamous cell carcinomas by a double-staining technique for nucleic acids and beta-catenin. Growth potential, as assessed by cell count at different time periods, was established for normal, SCC15 and SCC25 cell lines; oral squamous cell carcinomas were classified according to the histopathological and malignancy indexes.Results:  Beta-catenin localized at the plasma membrane in the normal and SCC15 cells, not in the SCC25 cells, where it localized mostly in the perinuclear and nuclear areas. In the growth assays, SCC25 cell lines proliferated faster than in normal and SCC15 cells over a period of 6 days (cell numbers were significantly different, P 〈 0.0001). Carcinoma sections showed a combination of membranous, cytoplasmic and, in few invading epithelial islands of two tumors, nuclear localization of beta-catenin.Conclusions:  In oral squamous cell carcinomas, nuclear beta-catenin staining was observed only within invading islands of two carcinomas deep in the underlying connective tissue. On the basis of this study, we conclude that intranuclear beta-catenin does not appear to be a common finding in oral squamous cell carcinomas and that a clear association between intranuclear beta-catenin and histopathological and malignancy indexes in vivo could not be established.

    Notes: Summary 59 patients with SAH and an aneurysm were investigated by CT and angiography. In the 59 patients 67 aneurysms were found. The mean interval between SAH and CT was 8 days, between SAH and angiography 11 days. Blood in the CSF space was visualized up to the 9th day in the patients and 67% of those investigated showed blood in the CSF-space in the CT. In 31% of the patients an aneurysm, in 29% an intracerebral haemorrhage and in 19% a recent infarct was found. A hydrocephalus was seen in 13% of the patients. Of 12 patients with recent infarcts 8 showed vasospasm which correlated in time and location with the infarct.

    Notes: Abstract Although a well-known disease worldwide, cerebral cysticerosis in European countries is a rare event. Due to increased travel to East-Asian and Latin American countries it is possible that the occurrence of brain cysticercosis will become more frequent. These facts should remind us of the possibility of cysticercosis of the nervous system. A case of cerebral and spinal cord cysticercosis is presented, causing symptoms of progressive dementia with ventricular occlusion and hydrocephalus. Differential diagnosis causes a major problem. It is shown that myelography may demonstrate characteristic features of the disease.

    Notes: Summary Quantitative electron microscopy of serial sections was used to study thePolytoma papillatum cell and some of its constituents (nucleus, chondriome, leucoplast) during its vegetative life cycle. The volumes of cells just entering into or passing through mitosis varied considerably and seemed to determine the number of subsequent division processes. Whereas a volumetric balance existed between the cell (100%) and the chondriome (8–9%) during the whole life cycle, there was a correlation between cell and nuclear volumes (8–10%) only during interphase growth and the onset of mitosis. At telophase the nucleus-to-cell-volume ratio was reduced to 2%, but gradually increased during cytokinesis (4.6% at early cytokinesis; 6.5% at late cytokinesis) until it reached the initial value again in newly formed daughter cells. The leucoplast-to-cell-volume ratio (10–26%) varied considerably without any recognizable dependence upon cell cycling. The mean short axis of mitochondrial profiles was proportional to the mean diameter (=thickness) of the mitochondria; the specific surface (outer membrane area per 100 μm3 mitochondrial volume), and the surface-to-volume ratio changed rhythmically. Changes in mitochondrial surface-to-volume ratio (Sc/Vc) were apparently correlated with changes in mitochondrial diameter (Dc). This relationship can be approximately described by the function Sc/Vc=4/Dc. Deviations of the surface-to-volume ratios of the nuclei from the surface-to-volume ratios of idealized spheres of equal size, indicating profound changes in nuclear shape, were found mainly during mitosis. Results were compared with those obtained from other morphometric investigations and discussed with regard to their functional meaning.
