Abstract:
What's new? Studies comparing the entire genome have turned up multiple loci associated with breast cancer susceptibility. Generally, these genome‐wide studies identify an “index SNP,” which most strongly associates with cancer susceptibility, but does not necessarily play a functional role in tumor development. To identify additional, potentially functional, variants, this team conducted fine‐mapping analysis of the 8q24 susceptibility region. They found three additional loci significant in women of European ancestry; functional analysis revealed that two of the loci could be functionally relevant for cancer formation.
