Abstract: A scanning spectral filter method is proposed for improving the intensity contrast originating from the phase ripple in the femtosecond chains, which is made using the character that the instantaneous frequency varies with the time approximately linearly for the chirped pulse in the time-frequency domain. The scanning spectral filtering for reducing the pre-pulse and post-pulse intensity is analyzed in the time-frequency domain by using the short-time Fourier transformation method. Results show that the coherent intensity pulse contrast can be improved by 0.41F2 for the chirped pulse or the compressed pulse, and the transmission efficiency of the chirped pulse can exceed 90% when the synchronizing time of the jitter ranges from -2 ps to 2 ps and the chirp rate p from 0.9C/T2 to 1.1C/T2.

Abstract: A scanning spectral filter method to improve the signal-noise-ratio in the femtosecond chains is proposed by using the characteristic that the instantaneous frequency varies with the time approximately linearly for the chirped pulse in the time-frequency domain. The scanning spectral filtering for reduing the amplification of spontaneous emission (ASE) intensity is analyzed in the time-frequency domain by using the Short-Time Fourier Transform method. The results show that the pulse contrast can be improved by two orders, and the transmission efficiency of the chirped pulse can exceed 90% when the synchronizing time jitter ranges from -2ps to 2ps and the chirp rate p from 0.9C/T2 to 1.10C/T2. Adopting the cascaded scanning filter to improve the pulse contrast is investigated too, which can improve the pulse contrast effectively. The great advantage of this novel nonlinear spectral filter technology is high energy and high peak intensity femtosecond chains for it filters out the ASE in the near field in temporal domain.

Abstract: Based on the extended Huygens-Fresnel principle and theory for the turbulence, the analytical expression for the beam propagation factor (M2-factor) of partially coherent beams propagating in a turbulent atmosphere has been derived. The effects of the structure constant of the refractive index fluctuations C2n and the inner scale of the turbulence l0on the M 2 factor have been analyzed quantitatively. Consequently, a new method for determining the characteristic parameters of the turbulence based on the measurement of the M 2 factor by experiments has been proposed. The results show that the laser beams with better spatial coherence property are more sensitive to the effects of turbulence, so the fundamental Gaussian beams with fully coherence can be used as the source in the measurement, and the usual instruments for measuring the M 2-factor can be adopted as the experiment equipments. It is very simple and convenient to determine the characteristic parameters of the turbulence by applying the method proposed in this paper.

Abstract: Based on the principle of scanning filtering, a new optical scanning filtering method for improving signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) of the chirped pulse is proposed. For the scanning filtering scheme of Fabry-Perot (F-P) etalon including an electro-optic crystal, the spectral characteristics of the scanning filter are analyzed quantitatively. Furthermore, the effects of the reflectivity of the parallel-plates of F-P etalon and the types of the electro-optic crystals on the output SNR are discussed in detail, and the influence of the variation of the controlling voltage applied to the electro-optic crystal on the filtering effect is also studied. The results show that the narrower the bandwidth of scanning filter transmission window is, the better the improved SNR will be. In order to ensure the filtering effect, the reflectivity of the parallel-plates of F-P etalon should be more than 0.9. Compared with the scheme of scanning filter built-in ordinary linear electro-optic crystal, the scheme of F-P etalon including an secondary standard electro-optic crystal, i.e., KTa1-xNbxO3 crystal, requires a low voltage, and it is easy to control. The differences of KTa1-xNbxO3 crystal components have little influence on the filtering effect, whereas the variations of controlling voltage and chirp rate of the signal exhibit a greater influence on the filtering effect.

Abstract: A new method for compressing ultra-short laser pulse has been proposed in which cascaded quadratic nonlinearity with tilt pulse is used. The pulse compression scheme with group velocity matching between fundamental harmonic (FH) and second harmonic (SH) pulses in a single BBO crystal has been analyzed theoretically. The compressed results have been investigated and compared between the cases of group velocity matching and mismatching. Furthermore, the influences of the phase mismatching between the FH and SH pulses, the length of the nonlinear crystal, the initial peak intensity and pulse-duration of the FH pulse on the pulse-duration compression have been analyzed and simulated. The results show that the matched group velocity between FH and SH pulses can improve significantly both the temporal profile and the spectrum distribution of the compressed pulse. High quality compression can be achieved by optimizing and selecting the parameters such as phase mismatch, length of the nonlinear crystal, initial intensity and so on. For the fundamental pulse with 800 nm central wavelength, 100 fs duration and 50 GW/cm2 peak intensity, the 20fs output FH pulse has been achieved, and at the same time the 14 fs SH pulse has also been generated in 25 mm-long BBO crystal with Δk=60 mm-1 (1.98° detuning angle) and external tilt angle γ0=74°.

Abstract: The irradiance uniformity on target plane is a key issue in laser-driven inertial confinement facilities. In the typical schemes of one-dimensional smoothing by spectral dispersion (1D-SSD) and the “star” grating, the stripe pattern inside the focal spot appears inevitably, besides, the fabrication of the “star” grating is relatively difficult. Thus, a new spectral dispersion smoothing scheme based on a hybrid grating is proposed, which not only achieves the better smoothing effect, but also exhibits some specific advantages in the fabrication and the dispersion way. According to the different direction of the spectral dispersion, the hybrid grating is divided into inner and outer dispersion areas. That is, the dispersion direction of the inter dispersion area is in the horizontal or vertical direction, and the dispersion direction of the outer dispersion area is in the azimuthal direction. When the laser beam with the temporal phase modulation propagates through the hybrid grating, the dispersion directions of the laser beam in the inner and the outer dispersion areas are different, leading to the redistribution of the speckles inside the focal spot in the resultant direction of the translation and rotation on the target plane. Consequently, the focal spot on the target plane achieves the beam smoothing in radial and horizontal or vertical direction. In the present paper, the theoretical model of the hybrid grating scheme based on the spectral dispersion smoothing is built up. Using the theoretical model, the smoothing effect of the hybrid grating scheme is analyzed, and compared with those of the typical schemes of 1D-SSD and the “star” grating. The contrast and the fractional power above the intensity (FOPAI) are used to evaluate the smoothing characteristic of the focal spot. In addition, the influences of the area ratio and groove density in the different dispersion areas of the hybrid grating on beam-smoothing effect are also discussed. Results indicate that when the inner dispersion area accounts for the 0.3-0.5 of the total dispersion area, the hybrid grating scheme can effectively suppress the stripe intensity modulation both in the radial direction and the vertical direction. With increasing the groove densities of the inner and the outer dispersion area in a certain range, the irradiance uniformity of the focal spot is further improved. However, considering the actual processing of the hybrid grating, the appropriate groove density should be selected. Compared with the typical scheme of the 1D-SSD, the scheme of the hybrid grating can achieve the better smoothing effect with the multi-direction spectral dispersion smoothing. Furthermore, the fabrication of the hybrid grating is relatively simple and the irradiation uniformity on the target plane is also good compared with those of the “star” grating scheme.

Abstract: In order to meet the requirement for uniform irradiation on the target in inertial confinement fusion, a schemie is proposed for achieving the depolarized superposition of multi-beams and further improving the uniformity of the focus spot by using complementary polarization control plates to change the polarization state of the beam. A physical model of multi-beam transformation by complementary polarization control plates is built up, and the mechanism how complementary polarization control plates affect the polarization characteristics of the focus spot is analyzed theoretically. The polarization properties and uniformity of the focus spot are compared for the two cases: viz the complementary polarization control plates and the un-complementary polarization control plates. Furthermore, the selection of elements of polarization control plates is discussed. Results show that after beams propagating through the complementary polarization control plates, the focal spot is not completely polarized but mixed randomly with various kinds of partially polarized states. Compared with the un-complementary polarization control plates, the complementary polarization control plates can achieve better depolarization effect on focus plane, resulting in the degree of polarization dropping to below 0.2, and thus achieving the effective improvement of intensity uniformity. When the complementary polarization control plates are utilized, the number of elements of polarization control plates has little effect on the polarization characteristics of the spot, but it can influence the intensity uniformity to some extent. Consequently, the number of elements of polarization control plates should be chosen appropriately in practical application.

Abstract: Aiming at the application of multilayer dielectric gratings (MDGs) in spectral beam combining (SBC) systems, a theoretical model of rectangular MDGs is built up and a beam propagation model of SBC systems based on the rectangular MDGs is further developed. The phase modulation introduced by the rectangular MDG is composed of the optical path difference on the top surface of reliefs and that of the relief structure itself, and is affected by the MDG parameters such as the grating groove depth, the grating duty cycle, the incidence angle of the central beam, etc. By the diffraction integral method and the principle of incoherent superposition, the intensity distribution of the combined beam of the SBC system based on the rectangular MDGs is numerically calculated and analyzed. Additionally, the beam quality of the combined beam is also obtained by the intensity second-order moments method, and the effects of the MDG parameters such as the groove depth, the duty cycle, the incidence angle of the central beam, and the fabrication errors of the MDG on the characteristics of the combined beam of the SBC systems are simulated and discussed in detail. The simulation results show that the beam quality of the combined beam after passing through the SBC systems is significantly better than that of the laser array. Since the quality of the combined beam is almost the same as that of an individual laser beam, for a SBC system without fabrication error, changing the groove depth, the duty cycle of the rectangular MDG or the incidence angle of the central beam does not affect the beam quality while it has obvious influence on the energy of the combined beam. This is mainly because the diffraction efficiency of the rectangular MDG depends on both the parameters of the MDG and the incidence angle of the central beam. However, fabrication error of MDG is unavoidable, and the fabrication error has a significant effect on both the beam quality and the energy of the combined beam. Compared with the effect generated by the groove depth error on beam quality, the influence introduced by the duty cycle error is more obvious. It is worth mentioning that the theoretical model of the SBC system based on the rectangular MDG can be applied to some other high-power laser systems due to its advantages such as low absorption and high damage threshold.

Abstract: In traditional laser quads arrangement schemes for spherical hohlraum in indirect-driven laser facilities, the laser quads to bring about the laser entrance hole (LEH) to close when they are incident at a large angle (55), while the complicated cross and overlap of laser quads inside the spherical hohlraum may be generated when they are incident at a small angle (35). To overcome these problems, a novel laser quads arrangement scheme for spherical hohlraum is proposed. The laser quads injected into the single LEH are divided into two cones (the incident angle of the inner cone is 35, and that of the outer cone is 55). Furthermore, the contrast and the fractional power above the intensity have been proposed to evaluate the irradiation uniformity of single laser quad, while the dispersion degree and the duty ratio are proposed to evaluate the distribution uniformity of all laser quads on the spherical hohlraum wall. Based on the beam smoothing scheme implemented by the combination of one-dimensional smoothing by spectral dispersion, the continuous phase plate and polarization control plate, the propagation model of laser quads in the spherical hohlraum has been built up, and further used to analyze the irradiation uniformity of single laser quad and all the laser quads on the spherical hohlraum wall. On this basis, the irradiation characteristics on the LEHs and the spherical hohlraum wall, and the propagation characteristic of laser quads in the novel and traditional laser quads arrangement schemes have been analyzed and compared. Results indicate that, compared with the traditional arrangement scheme of laser quads, the novel laser quads arrangement scheme has following advantages: The irradiation uniformity on the spherical hohlraum wall of single laser quad and all laser quads remains unchanged. Not only the LEH closure problem can be alleviated, but also the complicated cross and overlap of laser quads inside the spherical hohlraum in the traditional scheme could be avoided. The novel scheme may provide useful reference for the design of spherical hohlraum structure in laser indirect-driven facilities due to its obvious advantages over the traditional scheme.

Abstract: The concept and physical model of "beam moving" are proposed. For the scheme of angular spectral dispersion, taking the sinusoidally phase-modulated pulse and the linearly chirped pulse for example, the properties of the transverse movement of chirped broadband beam are analyzed theoretically. The effects of the transverse moving speed, the moving cycle and the moving mode on the smoothing of focal spot are discussed in detail. The results show that the linearly chirped pulse could achieve better smoothing effect than the sinusoidally frequency-modulated pulse with the same bandwidth.
