    Abstract: The temporally and spatially resolved characteristics of silicon dioxide aerogel plasmas were studied using x-ray spectroscopy. The plasma was generated in the near-Planckian radiation environment within gold hohlraum targets irradiated by laser pulses with a total energy of 2.4 kJ in 1 ns. The contributions of silicon ions at different charge states to the specific components of the measured absorption spectra were also investigated. It was found that each main feature in the absorption spectra of the measured silicon dioxide aerogel plasmas was contributed by two neighboring silicon ionic species.

    Abstract: Cell polarity plays key roles in tissue development, regeneration, and pathological processes. However, how the cells establish and maintain polarity is still obscure so far. In this study, by employing microfluidic techniques, we explored the influence of geometrical confinement and chemical stimulation on the cell polarity and their interplay. We found that teardrop shape-induced anterior/posterior polarization of cells displayed homogeneous distribution of epidermal growth factor receptor, and the polarity could be maintained in a uniform epidermal growth factor (EGF) solution, but be broken by a reverse gradient of EGF, implying different mechanism of geometrical and chemical cue-induced cell polarity. Further studies indicated that a teardrop pattern could cause polarized distribution of microtubule-organization center and nucleus-Golgi complex, and this polarity was weakened when the cells were released from the confinement. Our study provides the evidence regarding the difference between geometrical and chemical cue-induced cell polarity and would be useful for understanding relationship between polarity and directional migration of cells.

    Abstract: In several low-field Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (LF-NMR) and surface nuclear magnetic resonance applications, i.e., in the frequency range of kHz, high sensitivity magnetic field detectors are needed. Usually, low-Tc superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) with a high field sensitivity of about 1 fT/Hz1/2 are employed as detectors. Considering the flux trapping and operational difficulties associated with low-Tc SQUIDs, we designed and fabricated liquid-nitrogen-cooled Cu coils for NMR detection in the kHz range. A cooled coil system consisting of a 9-cm diameter Cu coil and a low noise preamplifier was systematically investigated and reached a sensitivity of 2 fT/Hz1/2 at 77 K, which is 3 times better compared to the sensitivity at 300 K. A Q-switch circuit as an essential element for damping the ringing effects of the pickup coil was developed to acquire free induction decay signals of a water sample with minimum loss of signal. Our studies demonstrate that cooled Cu coils, if designed properly, can provide a comparable sensitivity to low-Tc SQUIDs.

    Abstract: We investigated and optimized the low-frequency noise characteristics of a preamplifier used for readout of direct current superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs). When the SQUID output was detected directly using a room-temperature low-voltage-noise preamplifier, the low-frequency noise of a SQUID system was found to be dominated by the input current noise of the preamplifiers in case of a large dynamic resistance of the SQUID. To reduce the current noise of the preamplifier in the low-frequency range, we investigated the dependence of total preamplifier noise on the collector current and source resistance. When the collector current was decreased from 8.4 mA to 3 mA in the preamplifier made of 3 parallel SSM2220 transistor pairs, the low-frequency total voltage noise of the preamplifier (at 0.1 Hz) decreased by about 3 times for a source resistance of 30 Ω whereas the white noise level remained nearly unchanged. Since the relative contribution of preamplifier's input voltage and current noise is different depending on the dynamic resistance or flux-to-voltage transfer of the SQUID, the results showed that the total noise of a SQUID system at low-frequency range can be improved significantly by optimizing the preamplifier circuit parameters, mainly the collector current in case of low-noise bipolar transistor pairs.

    Abstract: The optical properties of a periodic slit-groove array perforated in a metal film have been studied experimentally and theoretically. Due to the interplay between periodic slits and periodic grooves, a switching from transmission minimum to maximum and the appearance of an additional dip were experimentally observed. To understand the effect, two different theoretical methods, i.e., the phenomenological method and analytical (coupled-mode) method, for studying the peculiar optical properties have been adopted. The results may provide us with new insights into underlying physics of interaction between the sub-wavelength objects and electromagnetic waves.

    Abstract: A new compound, 3S-hydroxy-7 melleine was isolated from the endophytic fungus Xylariasp No.2508 from the mangrove tree on the South China Sea coast. It was the first time that this kind of compound was isolated from marine fungus. The structure was elucidated by NMR data, infrared spectrum (IR) and mass spectrometry (MS). In addition, its structure was determined by the single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. It crystallized in monoclinic, space group P21 with a=10.8884(19) , b=7.2284(13) , c=13.398(2) , =104.217(3), C10H10O4H2O, Mr=212.20, V=1022.2(3) 3, Z=4, Dc=1.379 mg/m3, F(000)=448, =0.112 mm-1, the final R=0.0498, R=0.101 for 2407 observed reflections (I & gt;2(I)). The molecular backbone of the compound includes a benzopyran ring. By comparing with the melting point and the optical rotation of the known 3R-hydroxy-7 melleine in literature, the absolute configuration of the compound was determined as 3S. It didn't exhibit antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus at 200 g/disk in the preliminary test.

    Abstract: Propagation of an electromagnetic (EM) wave through a compound plasmonic crystal composed of perpendicularly arranged gold nanorod pairs has been studied. Because of the strong coupling between the EM wave and vibrations of free electrons inside nanorod pairs, the polarization-tunable polariton stop band as well as pronounced polarization conversion can be achieved in the compound plasmonic crystal. A theory based on Huang-Kun-like equations is presented to reveal the mechanism, which agrees well with the simulations. Our results may shed light on the structure design and physical understandings on the anisotropic metamaterials.

    Abstract: The 1T′ structural phase of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides MX2 (M = Mo, W; X = S, Se, Te) has attracted broad interest because of an exotic quantum spin Hall insulator state. Among them, the investigation on the electronic structures of the 1T′-WS2 monolayer is still lacking due to the difficulty in obtaining the 1T′-WS2 as a metastable phase. Here, we report the growth of 1T′ phase WS2 monolayer on the SrTiO3 (001) substrate using molecular beam epitaxy. Surprisingly, a large bandgap of 0.65 eV is revealed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and scanning tunneling spectroscopy, which is abnormally larger than the theoretical expectance. Moreover, an additional near-flatband emerges in the grown monolayer 1T′-WS2. The abnormally large bandgap and the emerging near-flatband are suggested to be the effect of interfacial interactions. Our findings provide important information about electronic structures and the interfacial effect of the epitaxial 1T′-WS2 monolayer on the SrTiO3(001) substrate and would stimulate future theoretical and experimental research on the 1T′-MX2 family.

    Abstract: Single-phase, insulating Bi1−xLaxFeO3 (BLFOx, x=0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, 0.30, and 0.40) ceramics were prepared. An obvious phase transition from rhombohedral to orthorhombic phase was observed near x=0.30. It is found that the phase transition destructs the spin cycloid of BiFeO3 (BFO), and therefore, releases the locked magnetization and enhances magnetoelectric interaction. As a result, improved multiferroic properties of the BLFO0.30 ceramics with remnant polarization and magnetization (2Pr and 2Mr) of 22.4μC∕cm2 and 0.041emu∕g, respectively, were established.
