    Abstract: Relatively little is known about the effect of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) on prognosis of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods In this nationwide, multicenter, prospective, cohort study, eligible patients aged 18-75 years with radical resection, and histologically confirmed stage II-IIIA NSCLC were enrolled. All patients received 4 cycles of standard adjuvant chemotherapy. Patients who received Chinese herbal decoction and (or) oral Chinese patent medicine for a cumulative period of not less than 6 months were defined as TCM group, otherwise they were considered as control group. The primary endpoint was DFS calculated using the Kaplan–Meier method. A time-dependent Cox proportional hazards model was used to correct immortal time bias. The secondary endpoints included DFS in patients of different characteristics, and safety analyses. This study was registered with the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR1800015776). Results A total of 507 patients were included (230 patients in the TCM group; 277 patients in the control group). The median follow-up was 32.1 months. 101 (44%) in the TCM group and 186 (67%) in the control group had disease relapse. The median DFS was not reached in the TCM group and was 19.4 months (95% CI, 14.2 to 24.6) in the control group. The adjusted time-dependent HR was 0.61 (95% CI, 0.47 to 0.78), equalling to a 39% reduction in the risk of disease recurrence with TCM. the number needed to treat to prevent one patient from relapsing was 4.29 (95% CI, 3.15 to 6.73) at 5 years. Similar results were observed in most of subgroups. Patients had a significant improvement in white blood cell decrease, nausea, decreased appetite, diarrhea, pain, and fatigue in the TCM group. Conclusion TCM may improves DFS and has a better tolerability profile in patients with stage II-IIIA NSCLC receiving standard chemotherapy after complete resection compared with those receiving standard chemotherapy alone. Further studies are warranted.

    Abstract: Traditional medicine preparations (TMPs) combined with chemotherapy is widely used for patients with advanced pancreatic cancer (APC); however, its efficacy and safety are still unclear. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of TMPs combined with chemotherapy for the treatment of APC. Methods A systematic search of eight electronic databases for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was conducted from inception to October 15, 2021. Tumor response was identified as primary outcome, whereas quality of life (QoL), cancer biomarkers, and adverse drug reactions (ADRs) were identified as secondary outcomes. Quality of the evidence for each outcome was evaluated by GRADE profiler. Results In total, 31 RCTs involving 1,989 individuals were included. This meta-analysis showed that TMPs combined with chemotherapy significantly improved the objective response rate (ORR) (RR=1.64, 95% CI [1.43 to 1.88], p & lt;0.00001), disease control rate (DCR) (RR=1.29, 95% CI [1.21 to 1.38], p & lt;0.00001), and QoL (continuous data: SMD=0.81, 95% CI [0.44 to 1.18], p & lt;0.0001, dichotomous data: RR=1.44, 95% CI [1.22 to 1.70], p & lt;0.0001), compared to those with chemotherapy alone. In addition, the combined treatment group also had lower levels of CA19-9 (SMD=-0.46, 95% CI [-0.90 to -0.02], p =0.04) and CEA (SMD=-0.55, 95% CI [-0.93 to -0.17], p =0.004). Moreover, TMPs reduced the ADRs during chemotherapy. Conclusion This systematic review suggests that TMPs combined with chemotherapy might be a potential option to enhance therapeutic effects and reduce ADRs during the treatment of APC. However, more high-quality randomized controlled trials with more participants are needed.     Abstract: Metastases from prostate cancer (PCa) to the penis are extremely rare, and few case reports exist in the literature. Because most patients usually present with multiple distant metastases at diagnosis, the prognosis is very poor. With the wide application of prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) PET/CT, penile metastases may be detected at an early stage. Thus, questions regarding whether early diagnosis and precise treatment will equate to a survival advantage have recently been raised. In the present study, we reported 3 cases of penile metastasis from castration-resistant PCa. Moreover, a patient with asymptomatic penile metastases was diagnosed by 18 F-PSMA PET/CT followed by lesion biopsy, and the prognosis was very well, despite with an aggressive pathological feature and low treatment intensity. In addition, we performed a literature review and found 62.5% of asymptomatic penile metastases were diagnosed by PSMA PET/CT in past seven years. Thus, we believe that PSMA PET/CT may detect more asymptomatic penile metastases in future, which led to early diagnosis, treatment and survival advantage.

    Abstract: Since the 1990s, the climate in the Amur River Basin (ARB) has changed, and large-scale wetlands in the region have been reclaimed for paddy fields. The study of the influence of climate change and agricultural expansion on groundwater storage is of great significance to the evaluation of regional water resource balance and the promotion of ecological protection and agricultural development. In this work, the groundwater storage anomaly (GWSA) in the ARB and its drivers were analyzed for the period 2003–2016 using Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite data, a Global Land Data Assimilation System model, and in situ observations of groundwater levels. Results indicated that 1) the GWSA in the ARB increased at a rate of 2.0–2.4 mm/yr from 2003 to 2016; the GWSA in the upper reaches of the ARB increased, whereas the GWSA in the middle and lower reaches decreased during the study period. 2) The GWSA in the middle and lower reaches of the ARB was greatly influenced by temperature (Tmp) and evapotranspiration (ET). Tmp was positively correlated with GWSA, whereas ET was negatively correlated with GWSA ( p & lt; 0.05). 3) Extreme rainfall had a delayed effect on groundwater recharge. Wetland degradation and agricultural development were the main factors causing the decrease of the GWSA in the middle and lower reaches of the ARB. In summary, temperature and evapotranspiration affect groundwater storage by regulating the water–heat balance, wetland reclamation reduces the regional storage capacity, and the irrigation required for reclaimed farmland is the main source of groundwater loss.

    Abstract: Once a majority of earthquakes occur without prediction, it is very likely to have a huge impact on human society. To solve the worldwide challenging problem of earthquake prediction, our laboratory has developed a set of sensory systems to monitor the abnormal activity of geological signals before an earthquake happens in China. At present, more than 300 stations have been deployed, and the observation time has exceeded 4 years. Based on the various geological activities collected, a local correlation tracking method is used to capture signal anomalies before an earthquake, and then the ROC curve is used for the evaluation of the predictive accuracy. The method is applied in the Sichuan-Yunnan area weekly, verifying the forecast within a 91-week time frame and a 30-week time frame. The method proposed in this article has earthquake prediction ability with a rate of over 70%. It promotes and contributes to helping people avoid the fear of unpredictable earthquakes.

    Abstract: Severe tracheomalacia (TM) patients with respiratory symptoms need surgical intervention, including aortopexy, internal stents or external splint. While some patients continue to have respiratory symptoms after tracheal relief, and there is no evidence to support any one surgery therapy over another. Here we introduce a clinical safety and efficacy of the three-dimensional (3D)-printed bioresorbable airway external splints in treating congenital heart disease (CHD) patients with severe TM. From May 2019 to September 2020, nine patients with severe TM were enrolled. The median age was 5 months (range, 3–25 months), and the median weight was 7.5 kg (range, 3–15 kg). All patients had wheezing, and two patients were assisted by machine ventilation (MV) preoperatively. The median length of TM was 1.5 cm (range, 1.0–3.0 cm). All patients underwent suspension of a “C”-shaped lumen airway external splint, which were designed in SOLIDWORKS and made of polycaprolactone (PCL). The airway external splint could provided effective support for at least 6 months and was completely degraded into carbon dioxide and water within 2–3 years. The median time of postoperative machine assisted ventilation was 23.7 h (range, 3.3–223.4 h), and the median time of ICU stay was 9 days (range, 4–25 days). The median follow-up time was 18 months (range, 12–24 months). Respiratory symptoms were all relieved, and no external splint-associated complications occurred. The 3D computed tomography reconstruction showed no airway stenosis. Personalized 3D-printed bioresorbable airway external splint can not only limit external compression and prevent airway collapse but also ensure the growth potential of the airway, which is a safe, reliable and effective treatment for CHD with TM.

    Abstract: To assess the rate and location of residual tumor in re-transurethral resection of bladder tumor (re-TURBT) and develop a risk stratification tool to assist clinicians in making treatment decisions. Patients and Methods The data of 144 patients with high-risk bladder cancer who received re-TURBT were retrospectively reviewed. The rate and location of residual tumors was recorded. Logistic regression was performed to explore risk factors for residual tumors, and a risk classification tool was developed. Results Among the 144 patients, the rates of residual tumor and tumor location at the base of the primary tumor were 22.2% and 10.4%, respectively. Non-urothelial carcinoma subspecialist, piecemeal resection and the absence of detrusor muscle in the first specimen were defined as risk factors. Patients were categorized into low-, intermediate-, and high-risk groups according to the number of risk factors. The rate of residual tumor in the high-risk group was significantly higher than that in the low- and intermediate-risk groups (50% vs. 7.8%, P =0.001; 50% vs. 18.6%, P =0.002). Moreover, high-risk patients benefitted more from a second resection at the base of the primary tumor due to the high rate of residual tumor located at this site than low- and intermediate-risk patients (23.5% vs. 2.0%, P =0.002; 23.5% vs. 10.2%, P =0.083). Conclusions Risk stratification based on the subspecialist category, operative method, and presence or absence of detrusor muscle in the first specimen could help identify patients who benefit from re-TURBT and second resection the base of the primary tumor.

    Abstract: Background: Brain metastasis, with an incidence of more than 30%, is a common complication of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Therefore, there is an urgent need for an assessment method that can effectively predict brain metastases in NSCLC and help understand its mechanism. Materials and methods: GSE30219, GSE31210, GSE37745, and GSE50081 datasets were downloaded from the GEO database and integrated into a dataset (GSE). The integrated dataset was divided into the training and test datasets. TCGA-NSCLC dataset was regarded as an independent verification dataset. Here, the limma R package was used to identify the differentially expression genes (DEGs). Importantly, the RiskScore model was constructed using univariate Cox regression analysis and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) analysis. Moreover, we explored in detail the tumor mutational signature, immune signature, and sensitivity to treatment of brain metastases in NSCLC. Finally, a nomogram was built using the rms package. Results: First, 472 DEGs associated with brain metastases in NSCLC were obtained, which were closely associated with cancer-associated pathways. Interestingly, a RiskScore model was constructed using 11 genes from 472 DEGs, and the robustness was confirmed in GSE test, entire GSE, and TCGA datasets. Samples in the low RiskScore group had a higher gene mutation score and lower immunoinfiltration status. Moreover, we found that the patients in the low RiskScore group were more sensitive to the four chemotherapy drugs. In addition, the predictive nomogram model was able to effectively predict the outcome of patients through appropriate RiskScore stratification. Conclusion: The prognostic RiskScore model we established has high prediction accuracy and survival prediction ability for brain metastases in NSCLC.

    Abstract: This paper investigates the effects of freeze-thaw cycles on the performance of asphalt mixtures containing 60% rejuvenated asphalt pavement (RAP). Two rejuvenation processes, traditional and bio-graded recycling, are compared regarding high-temperature performance, low-temperature performance, dynamic stability, flexural tensile strength, split tensile strength, water stability, and fatigue performance after various freeze-thaw cycles. The results indicate that bio-graded rejuvenation, compared to traditional rejuvenation, effectively enhances the high-temperature performance, low-temperature performance, water stability, and fatigue performance after freeze-thaw cycles. Both rejuvenations initially meet the dynamic stability requirements but show a decreasing trend with increasing freeze-thaw cycles, with traditional rejuvenation exhibiting more severe degradation. The flexural tensile strength initially exceeds that of conventional asphalt mixtures but decreases significantly with freeze-thaw cycles, especially in traditional rejuvenation. Additionally, freeze-thaw action increases the internal void ratio, affecting water stability and anti-freezing ability, particularly in traditional rejuvenated mixtures. These findings underscore the impact of freeze-thaw cycles on rejuvenated asphalt mixtures and emphasize the importance of innovative rejuvenation techniques for sustainable pavement.
