Abstract: Spatialized GDP data is important for studying the relationships between human activities and environmental changes. Rapid and accurate acquisition of these datasets are therefore a significant area of study. Defense Meteorological Satellite Program/Operational Linescan System (DMSP/OLS) radiance-calibrated nighttime light (RC NTL) images exhibit the potential for providing superior estimates for GDP spatialization, as they are not restricted by the saturated pixels which exist in nighttime stable light (NSL) images. However, the drawback of light overflow is the limited accuracy of GDP estimation, and GDP data estimations based on RC NTL images cannot be directly used for temporal analysis due to a lack of on-board calibration. This study develops an intercalibration method to address the comparability problem. Additionally, NDVI images are used to reduce the light overflow effect. In this way, the secondary and tertiary industry outputs are estimated by using intercalibrated RC NTL images. Primary industry production is estimated by using land use/cover data. Ultimately, four 1 km gridded GDP maps of Guangdong for 2000, 2004, 2006 and 2010 are generated. The verification results of the proposed intercalibration method demonstrate that this method is reasonable and can be effectively implemented. These maps can be used to analyze the distribution and spatiotemporal changes of GDP density in Guangdong.

Abstract: This paper proposes a new damage identification approach for beam structures with stochastic parameters based on uncertain static measurement data. This new approach considers not only the static measurement errors, but also the modelling error of the initial beam structures as random quantities, and can also address static damage identification problems with relatively large uncertainties. First, the stochastic damage identification equations with respect to the damage indexes were established. On this basis, a new homotopy analysis algorithm was used to solve the stochastic damage identification equations. During the process of solution, a static condensation technique and a L1 regularization method were employed to address the limited measurement data and ill-posed problems, respectively. Furthermore, the definition of damage probability index is presented to evaluate the possibility of existing damages. The results of two numerical examples show that the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed damage identification approach are good. In comparison to the first-order perturbation method, the proposed method can ensure better accuracy in damage identification with relatively large measurement errors and modelling error. Finally, according to the static tests of a simply supported concrete beam, the proposed method successfully identified the damage of the beam.

Abstract: Location localization technology is used in a number of industrial and civil applications. Real time location localization accuracy is highly dependent on the quality of the distance measurements and efficiency of solving the localization equations. In this paper, we provide a novel approach to solve the nonlinear localization equations efficiently and simultaneously eliminate the bad measurement data in range-based systems. A geometric intersection model was developed to narrow the target search area, where Newton’s Method and the Direct Search Method are used to search for the unknown position. Not only does the geometric intersection model offer a small bounded search domain for Newton’s Method and the Direct Search Method, but also it can self-correct bad measurement data. The Direct Search Method is useful for the coarse localization or small target search domain, while the Newton’s Method can be used for accurate localization. For accurate localization, by utilizing the proposed Modified Newton’s Method (MNM), challenges of avoiding the local extrema, singularities, and initial value choice are addressed. The applicability and robustness of the developed method has been demonstrated by experiments with an indoor system.

Abstract: Based on the up-floating incident of the basement in a high-rise residential building, the finite element (FE) model of the up-floating destruction region is established to investigate the damage mechanism. The stress states and the deformations of the basement structure are obtained under complex loads including water buoyancy forces, vehicle loads and construction loads. To assess the extent of damage, a novel damage indicator is defined based on two levels: the cracking bending moments and the yield bending moment. The first-level cracking bending moment, second-level cracking bending moment and the yield bending moment can be determined using the section stratification method. By comparing the maximum bending moment of the component with its corresponding cracking moment, one can determine whether the cracks have occurred and assess their severity. Meanwhile, the antifloating failure model is constructed to analyze the mechanism of the up-floating destruction. Finally, a detailed reinforcement treatment plan of ‘decompression first and then reinforcement’ is presented to reinforce and repair the damaged basement structure. The mechanism analysis of the up-floating destruction and the comprehensive reinforcement treatments ensure the simulation of the life cycle of emergence, development and treatment to ensure structural safety.

Abstract: How to enhance the bioavailability and prolong the residence time of drugs in the eye present the major barriers to traditional eye delivery. Nanotechnology has been widely used in ocular drug delivery systems because of its advantages of minimizing adverse reactions, decreasing the frequency of administration, prolonging the release time, and improving the bioavailability of the drug in the eye. As natural product-based nanostructured systems, bioinspired nanostructured systems have presented as less toxic, easy to prepare, and cost-effective and have potential application value in the field of nanotechnology. A systematic classification of bioinspired nanostructured systems based on their inspiration source and formulation and their brief applications in disease are presented here. A review of recent research progress of the bioinspired nanostructured systems for the treatment of the anterior and posterior segment of ocular disorders is then presented in detail. Finally, current challenges and future directions with regard to manufacturing bioinspired nanomaterials are provided.

Abstract: Monitoring agricultural abandonment is essential in understanding the effects on the environment and food security. Polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) is an efficient approach for the monitoring of large-scale agricultural land cover in cloudy and rainy areas. However, previous studies have not taken advantage of the valuable phase information and not fully utilized the spatiotemporal features of farmland parcels, which has seriously limited the abandoned land identification accuracy. In this study, we developed a new method for the mapping of abandoned land based on the spatiotemporal features from PolSAR Single Look Complex (SLC) images via deep learning methods. First, backscattering coefficients (σ0VV, σ0VH) were derived, and the polarimetric parameters (entropy, anisotropy and mean alpha angle) were obtained based on Cloude–Pottier polarimetric decomposition. Then, the VGG16 deep convolutional network was innovatively used to extract spatial features from both the backscattering coefficients and polarimetric parameters. Next, the separability index was calculated to select the most effective spatial features. Finally, LSTM classifications were conducted based on the time series of backscattering features, the polarimetric parameters, the extracted spatial features and their combinations. The results showed that the introduction of multitemporal polarimetric parameters and spatial features both led to an improvement in the abandoned land identification accuracy. The combination of backscattering features, polarimetric parameters and spatial features yielded the best performance in identifying abandoned land, with producer’s accuracy of 88.29% and user’s accuracy of 84.03%. This study demonstrated the potential of polarimetric parameters and validated the effectiveness of spatiotemporal features in abandoned land identification. It provided a practical method for the production of a highly reliable abandoned land mapping in cloudy and rainy areas.

Abstract: This paper presents a new statistical model updating method of beam structures with random parameters under static load. The new updating method considers structural parameters and measurement errors to be random. To reduce the unmeasured degrees of freedom in the finite element model, a static condensation technique is used in this method. A statistical model updating equation with respect to element updated factors is established afterwards. The element updated factors are expanded as random multivariate power series. Using a high-order perturbation technique, the statistical model updating equation can be solved to obtain the coefficients of the power series expansions of the element updated factors. The results of two numerical examples show that for the solution of the statistical model updating equation, the accuracy of the proposed method agrees with that of the Monte Carlo simulation method very well. The static responses obtained by the updated finite element model coincide with the measured results very well. Finally, a series of static load tests of the concrete beam are conducted to testify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract: Rapid urbanization has caused many environmental problems, such as the heat island effect, intensifying air pollution, pollution from runoff, loss of wildlife habitat, etc. Accurate evaluations of these problems demand an accurate delineation of the spatial extent of the urban fringe. Conceptual and analytical ambiguity of the urban fringe and a general lack of consensus among researchers have made its measurement very difficult. This study reports a compound and reliable method to delineate the urban fringe area using a case study. Based on the 'fringe effect' theory in landscape ecology, the existing land cover information entropy model for defining the urban fringe is renewed by incorporating scale theory, cartography and urban geography theory. Results show that the urban fringe area of Guangzhou and Foshan metropolitan area covers an area of 2031 km2, and it occupies over 31% of the total study area. Result evaluation by industry structure data shows satisfactory correspondence with different land cover types. This paper reports the method and outcome of an attempt to provide an objective, repeatable and generally applicable method for mapping its spatial extent from remote sensing imageries, and could be beneficial to relevant urban studies and urban fringe management projects.
