    Abstract: Background: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has therapeutic effects on craving in methamphetamine (METH) use disorder (MUD). The chronic abuse of METH causes impairments in executive function, and improving executive function reduces relapse and improves treatment outcomes for drug use disorder. The purpose of this study was to determine whether executive function helped predict patients' responses to rTMS treatment. Methods: This study employed intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) rTMS modalities and observed their therapeutic effects on executive function and craving in MUD patients. MUD patients from an isolated Drug Rehabilitation Institute in China were chosen and randomly allocated to the iTBS group and sham-stimulation group. All participants underwent the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function - Adult Version Scale (BRIEF-A) and Visual Analog Scales (VAS) measurements. Sixty-five healthy adults matched to the general condition of MUD patients were also recruited as healthy controls. Findings: Patients with MUD had significantly worse executive function. iTBS groups had better treatment effects on the MUD group than the sham-stimulation group. Further Spearman rank correlation and stepwise multivariate regression analysis revealed that reduction rates of the total score of the BRIEF-A and subscale scores of the inhibition factor and working memory factor in the iTBS group positively correlated with improvements in craving. ROC curve analysis showed that working memory (AUC = 87.4%; 95% CI = 0.220, 0.631) and GEC (AUC = 0.761%; 95% CI = 0.209, 0.659) had predictive power to iTBS therapeutic efficacy. The cutoff values are 13.393 and 59.804, respectively. Conclusions: The iTBS rTMS had a better therapeutic effect on the executive function of patients with MUD, and the improved executive function had the potential to become a predictor for the efficacy of iTBS modality for MUD treatment.     Abstract: Methamphetamine (MA) is a psychostimulant associated with a high relapse rate among patients with MA use disorder (MUD). Long-term use of MA is associated with mental disorders, executive dysfunction, aggressive behaviors, and impulsivity among patients with MUD. However, identifying which factors may be more closely associated with relapse has not been investigated. Thus, we aimed to investigate the psychological factors and the history of MA use that may influence MA relapse. Methods This cross-sectional study included 168 male MUD patients (MUD group) and 65 healthy male residents (control group). Each patient was evaluated with self-report measures of executive dysfunction, psychopathological symptoms, impulsiveness, aggressiveness, and history of MA use. Data were analyzed with t -tests, analyses of variance, and correlation and regression analyses. Results The MUD group reported greater executive dysfunction, psychopathological symptoms, impulsivity, and aggression than the control group. Lower age of first MA use was associated both with having relapsed one or more times and with having relapsed two or more times; greater executive dysfunction was associated only with having relapsed two or more times. Conclusion Patients with MUD reported worse executive function and mental health. Current results also suggest that lower age of first MA use may influence relapse rate in general, while executive dysfunction may influence repeated relapse in particular. The present results add to the literature concerning factors that may increase the risk of relapse in individuals with MUD.

    Abstract: The nature of redox is electron transfer; in this way, energy metabolism brings redox stress. Lactate production is associated with NAD regeneration, which is now recognized to play a role in maintaining redox homeostasis. The cellular lactate/pyruvate ratio could be described as a proxy for the cytosolic NADH/NAD ratio, meaning lactate metabolism is the key to redox regulation. Here, we review the role of lactate dehydrogenases in cellular redox regulation, which play the role of the direct regulator of lactate–pyruvate transforming. Lactate dehydrogenases (LDHs) are found in almost all animal tissues; while LDHA catalyzed pyruvate to lactate, LDHB catalyzed the reverse reaction . LDH enzyme activity affects cell oxidative stress with NAD/NADH regulation, especially LDHA recently is also thought as an ROS sensor. We focus on the mutual regulation of LDHA and redox robustness. ROS accumulation regulates the transcription of LDHA. Conversely, diverse post-translational modifications of LDHA, such as phosphorylation and ubiquitination, play important roles in enzyme activity on ROS elimination, emphasizing the potential role of the ROS sensor and regulator of LDHA.

    Abstract: To explore the correlation among sleep quality, physical frailty, and cognitive function in the older adults in community, and to explore the mediating role of sleep quality. Methods A total of 1,182 community-based older adults were investigated with frailty phenotype (FP), Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PISQI), Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA) and self-made general information questionnaire. Results The incidence of physical frailty among the older adults in the community was 25.8% and the incidence of cognitive decline was 19.5%. Cognitive function was negatively correlated with physical frailty ( r  = −0.236, p   & lt; 0.01) and sleep quality ( r  = −0.558, p   & lt; 0.01). Sleep quality was positively correlated with physical frailty ( r  = 0.337, p   & lt; 0.01). Conclusion The physical frailty of the older adults has a direct prediction effect on cognitive function, and is regulated by the mediating role of sleep quality. Sleep quality partially mediates the relationship between cognitive dysfunction and physical frailty, which is a new insight into the study of cognition and physical frailty in the older adults. In the future, we can take measures to improve the sleep quality of the older adults, so as to reduce the occurrence of cognitive dysfunction and physical frailty of the older adults.

    Abstract: To visualize and analyze the literature related to sciatic nerve injury treatment from January 2019 to December 2023, and summarize the current status, hotspots, and development trends of research in this field. Methods Using CiteSpace and VOSviewer software, we searched the Web of Science database for literature related to the treatment of sciatic nerve injury. Then we analyzed and plotted visualization maps to show the number of publications, countries, institutions, authors, keywords, references, and journals. Results A total of 2,653 articles were included in the English database. The annual number of publications exceeded 230, and the citation frequency increased yearly. The United States and China were identified as high-influence nations in this field. Nantong University was the leading institution in terms of close cooperation among institutions. The authors Wang Yu had the highest number of publications and were highly influential in this field. Keyword analysis and reference Burst revealed a research focus on nerve regeneration and neuropathic pain, which involve regenerative medicine and neural tissue engineering. Chronic pain resulting from sciatic nerve injury often manifests alongside anxiety, depression, cognitive-behavioral disorders, and other issues. Interventions such as stem cells, electrical stimulation, electroacupuncture, total joint replacement, pharmacological interventions, gene therapy, nerve conduits, chitosan scaffolds, and exercise promote nerve repair and alleviate pain. Schwann cells have been the focus of much attention in nerve repair and regeneration. Improving the outcome of sciatic nerve injury is a current research challenge and focus in this field. Based on keyword Burst, nerve conduits and grafts may become a potential research hotspot in the treatment of sciatic nerve injury. Conclusion This visual analysis summarizes research trends and developments of sciatic nerve injury treatment and predicts potential research frontiers and hot directions.

    Abstract: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by a joint hypoxia microenvironment. Our previous untargeted metabolomics study found that sphingolipid (SPL) metabolism was abnormal in the joint synovial fluid samples from adjuvant arthritis (AA) rats. Geniposide (GE), an iridoid glycoside component of the dried fruit of Gardenia jasminoides Ellis, is commonly used for RA treatment in many Asian countries. At present, the mechanism of GE in the treatment of RA, especially in the joint hypoxia microenvironment, is not entirely clear from the perspective of SPL metabolism. The purpose of this research was to explore the potential mechanism of abnormal SPL metabolism in RA joint hypoxia microenvironment and the intervention effect of GE, through the untargeted metabolic analysis based on the ultra-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF/MS). Arthritis index, foot swelling and histopathology were used to assess whether the AA rat model was successfully established. The SPLs extracts collected from AA rats’ synovial tissue, serum and rheumatoid arthritis synovial fibroblasts (RASFs, MH7A cells, hypoxia/normoxia culture) were analyzed by metabolomics and lipdomics approach based on UPLC-Q-TOF/MS, to identify potential biomarkers associated with disorders of GE regulated RA sphingolipid metabolism. As a result, 11 sphingolipid metabolites related to RA were screened and identified. Except for galactosylceramide (d18:1/20:0), GE could recover the change levels of the above 10 sphingolipid biomarkers in varying degrees. Western blotting results showed that the changes in ceramide (Cer) level regulated by GE were related to the down-regulation of acid-sphingomyelinase (A-SMase) expression in synovial tissue of AA rats. To sum up, this research examined the mechanism of GE in the treatment of RA from the perspective of SPL metabolism and provided a new strategy for the screening of biomarkers for clinical diagnosis of RA.

    Abstract: Introduction: The major clinical problem presently confronting the Chinese newborn screening (NBS) programs by tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) is the lack of comprehensive reference intervals (RIs) for disease biomarkers. To close this gap, the Chinese National Center for Clinical Laboratories (NCCL) launched a nationwide study to investigate the dynamic pattern of 35 MS/MS NBS biomarkers and establish accurate and robust RIs. Methods: Blood spot samples from 4,714,089 Chinese neonates were tested in participating centers/laboratories and used for study analysis. MS/MS NBS biomarker trends were visually assessed by their concentrations over age. Specific partitions were determined arbitrarily by each day and sex or by the statistical method of Harris and Boyd. RIs, corresponding to the 2.5th and 97.5th percentiles, as well as the 1th, 25th, 75th and 99th percentiles were calculated for each reference partition using a non-parametric rank approach. Results: Most MS/MS NBS biomarkers fluctuated during the first week of life, followed by a relatively stable concentration. Age and sex-specific RIs were established and presented an improved specificity over the RIs used in participating centers/laboratories. Females demonstrated higher 2.5th and 97.5th percentiles in all amino acids except arginine and ornithine than males, whereas males showed higher 2.5th and 97.5th percentiles in most acylcarnitines. Conclusion: The present study determined the dynamic trends of 35 MS/MS biomarkers and established age and sex-specific RIs, valuably contributing to the current literature and timely evaluation of neonatal health and disease.

    Abstract: This review aims to present a comprehensive bibliometric analysis related to Schwann cells (SCs) in neurosciences from 2012 to 2021. Methods We used the Web of Science core collection database to obtain publications on SCs in the field of neurosciences from 2012 to 2021. The obtained data were further visually analyzed by using CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and an online bibliometric platform. Results We retrieved a total of 1,923 publications related to SCs in neurosciences. The number of publications in this field fluctuates steadily each year, and the number of citations is increasing year by year. The United States is leading the field, with LERU and the University OF London as influential institutions, Jessen KR and Feltri ML as the most representative authors, and GLIA and JOURNAL OF NEUROSCIENCE as authoritative journals in the field. Meanwhile, we predict that a more in-depth study of autophagy and phagocytosis functions of SCs and the key regulator c-Jun will probably be a hot spot for future research. Conclusion This study summarizes the current research results and predicts research trends for further research, which will facilitate researchers in quickly understanding the current state of research in the field while referring to new research directions.
