Abstract: The first direct gravitational‐wave detection was made by the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory on September 14, 2015. The GW150914 signal was strong enough to be apparent, without using any waveform model, in the filtered detector strain data. Here, features of the signal visible in the data are analyzed using concepts from Newtonian physics and general relativity, accessible to anyone with a general physics background. The simple analysis presented here is consistent with the fully general‐relativistic analyses published elsewhere, in showing that the signal was produced by the inspiral and subsequent merger of two black holes. The black holes were each of approximately , still orbited each other as close as ∼350 km apart and subsequently merged to form a single black hole. Similar reasoning, directly from the data, is used to roughly estimate how far these black holes were from the Earth, and the energy that they radiated in gravitational waves.

Abstract: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the prognostic factors associated with and treatments for late‐onset severe pneumonia ( LOSP ) in patients who underwent allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo‐ HSCT ). Methods Fifty consecutive patients who underwent non‐T‐cell‐depleted allo‐ HSCT at the Peking University Institute of Hematology and met the criterion of LOSP after allo‐ HSCT were enrolled. Results The median time from allo‐ HSCT to the occurrence of LOSP was 231 (90–1487) days. Twenty‐eight patients harbored 1 or more pathogens (infectious LOSP , I‐ LOSP ), whereas 22 did not harbor any pathogens (non‐infectious LOSP , NI ‐ LOSP ). The 100‐day survival rate of LOSP patients was 31.1%. Patients smoking before allo‐ HSCT (0% vs. 35.4%, P  = 0.002) and male gender (20.0% vs. 61.9%, P  = 0.026) had lower 100‐day survival rate. Patients with a lower bronchoalveolar lavage fluid ( BALF ) neutrophil percentage had higher 100‐day survival rate relative to those with higher BALF neutrophil percentage (45.5% vs. 16.7%, P  = 0.012). The 100‐day survival rate of patients with I‐ LOSP was lower than that of patients with NI ‐ LOSP (19.1% vs. 46.9%, P  = 0.043). Patients given late (≥1 week after LOSP diagnosis) and low‐dose methylprednisolone ( MP ) therapy (≤2 mg/kg/day) had the best 100‐day survival rate. In the multivariate analysis, nonsmoking before allo‐ HSCT and late and low‐dose MP therapy were significantly associated with a better survival after LOSP . Conclusion LOSP is a severe complication after allo‐ HSCT . The correct timing and corticosteroid dosage in the context of broad‐spectrum antimicrobial therapy might further improve the outcomes of patients with LOSP .

Abstract: Cytomegalovirus ( CMV ) enteritis after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo‐ HSCT ) is difficult to diagnose. We aimed to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of the detection of CMV DNA in feces for predicting CMV enteritis. Methods HSCT patients with intestinal graft‐versus‐host disease ( GVHD ) were enrolled if they met the following criteria: (i) underwent a colonoscopy and (ii) peripheral blood and feces specimens were available for CMV DNA detection within 24 h of colonoscopy. The colonoscopy histology was used as the gold standard for diagnosing CMV enteritis. Results Fifty‐six patients underwent 58 colonoscopy examinations, and 7 were diagnosed as having CMV enteritis. Within 24 h of colonoscopy, 9 patients had detectable CMV in the feces and 19 patients had detectable CMV in the plasma, respectively. In the 7 patients with CMV enteritis, only 2 had detectable CMV in the stool, resulting in a sensitivity of 28.6%. In the 51 patients without CMV enteritis, 44 had no detectable CMV in the stool, with a specificity of 86.3%. Conclusion We concluded that CMV detection in the feces was not a good predictor of CMV enteritis in patients with intestinal GVHD after allo‐ HSCT .

Abstract: To evaluate the clinical profile of patients with diabetic ketoacidosis in tertiary hospitals in China. Methods A retrospective study of patients hospitalized with diabetic ketoacidosis between 2010 and 2012 was carried out in 15 tertiary hospitals around China. Clinical and laboratory data were collected. Patients were classified based on clinical diagnosis and treatment history. Groups were compared for differences in vital statistics and biochemical profiles at presentation. Results The study comprised 643 patients with diabetic ketoacidosis: 308 patients (47.9%) with Type 1 diabetes, 294 patients (45.7%) with Type 2 diabetes and 41 patients (6.4%) with atypical diabetes. Three hundred and eighty‐eight diabetic ketoacidosis episodes (60.3%) were in patients with known diabetes. The most common precipitating factor was infection (40.1%), followed by unknown causes (36.9%) and non‐compliance with anti‐diabetes treatment (16.8%). At presentation, gastrointestinal symptoms and dehydration were more common in the Type 1 diabetes group. For new‐onset diabetes, only 74.4% and 55.9% of patients were evaluated for β–cell function and autoantibodies for classification. Only 67% of patients with diabetic ketoacidosis received appropriate fluid therapy and 56% patients with severe acidosis received bicarbonate therapy. The length of hospital stay was 10.0 (7.0–14.0) days. The mortality rate was 1.7%, and was much higher in Type 2 diabetes than that in Type 1 diabetes (3.2% vs. 0.4%, P   〈  0.01). Conclusions Type 2 and Type 1 diabetes contribute to a similar proportion of cases presenting with diabetic ketoacidosis in China. Admissions with diabetic ketoacidosis are still associated with significant mortality and prolonged hospitalization. The efficiency of diabetic ketoacidosis management needs to be improved by implementing the updated guidelines.

Abstract: Garzê and Aba form the second largest Tibetan‐inhabited area of China. Blood services have never been reported for this region before. Objective To assess the current situation and analyse whether a safe and adequate blood supply has been developed in both Garzê and Aba. Methods We conducted a longitudinal survey covering the period 2011–2016. The subjects of interest were recruited from non‐remunerated voluntary donation, blood testing, clinical transfusion practices and infrastructure of local blood service systems. Results The donation rate and blood collection volume were below the average levels of both the Sichuan Province and mainland China. Component therapy was widely used, but inappropriate usage of whole blood existed. A lack of national specific standards for people on the plateaus led to local blood transfusions being conducted without full clinical assessment. Endemic and frequently occurring disease, such as hydatid disease and gastrointestinal disease, were inevitable risks for blood utilisation and safety. The potential influence of religious belief and traditions, like ‘male‐leaving marriages’, of Tibetans on donor recruitment and blood safety requires further research. Conclusions A relatively safe and complete blood service system has been developed in this region. However, there is still an urgent need for comprehensive and effective support from the government in terms of policies and finance. As an epidemic area of hydatid disease and sexually transmitted disease, this region needs to emphasise public health measures, such as blood safety and inappropriate usage of blood products.

Abstract: Diarrhoea caused by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) expressing F4 (F4ab, F4ac and F4ad) fimbriae is a significant cause of mortality and morbidity in newborn and weaned pigs. The locus controlling susceptibility towards ETEC F4ab/ac has been mapped to SSC13q41, in which TFRC (transferrin receptor) was localized and considered as a positional candidate gene for ETEC F4ab/ac receptor. In this study, we determined susceptibility/resistance to ETEC F4ab/ac in a total of 755 F 2 animals from a White Duroc × Erhualian intercross using a microscopic enterocyte adhesion assay. We identified two TFRC polymorphisms (SNPs 591 A 〉 G and 632 A 〉 G) in a single exon after comparative sequencing analysis of 2371‐bp amplicons containing the complete coding region of TFRC using RNA of eight full‐sib F 2 animals with susceptible and resistant phenotypes. The intron sequences flanking the two exon polymorphisms were obtained, revealing an intron polymorphism (SNP 291 C 〉 T). We genotyped the 19 founder animals of the White Duroc × Erhualian intercross for the identified polymorphisms, showing that only the 291 C 〉 T polymorphism is a highly informative marker. We further genotyped all 59 F 1 and 755 F 2 animals for the 291 C 〉 T polymorphism, and the association of this polymorphism with susceptibility/resistance to ETEC F4ab/ac in these F 2 animals was evaluated by the transmission disequilibrium test. The result showed that the 291 C 〉 T polymorphism is not a causal mutation, however, has a significant linkage disequilibrium with the ETEC F4ab/ac, especially F4ac receptor locus.

Abstract: Gynecological cancer survivors are at increased risk of psychological problems including suicide risk. Suicidal ideation, which was thought to be precursor to suicide attempts, has not been well studied. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence, and determinants of suicidal ideation for women with gynecological cancer, and then to assess the effect of coping style and social support on suicidal ideation. Methods Patients with cervical, ovarian and endometrial cancers seen at Hunan Provincial Tumor Hospital from September 2012 to June 2013 were consecutively recruited and were asked to complete the Zung Self‐Rating Depression Scale, Suicidal Ideation of Self‐rating Scale, Medical Coping Modes Questionnaire and Social Support Rating Scale. Path analysis was used to examine the relationship among coping style, social support, depression symptoms and suicidal ideation. Results A total of 579 (579/623, 93.0%) gynecological cancer patients were enrolled in this study and completed all investigations between September 2012 and June 2013. Among them, 105 (18.1%) patients reported suicidal ideation, with the highest rate in patients with ovarian cancer (30.16%). Suicidal ideation was associated with depression symptoms, care providers, chemotherapy history and acceptance‐resignation. Path analysis showed that the acceptance‐resignation affected suicidal ideation directly as well as mediated by social support and depression symptoms, while confrontation and avoidance affected suicidal ideation entirely through social support and depression symptoms. Conclusions Suicidal ideation is high among patients with gynecological cancer, especially among ovarian cancer patients. Coping strategies such as confrontation and avoidance, and social support may be helpful for preventing suicidal ideation among them. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract: Idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is characterized by ventricular chamber enlargement and systolic dysfunction with normal left ventricular wall thickness. The pathogenesis of DCM has been extensively investigated for many years, but it remains uncertain. Recently, many studies indicated that autoimmune mechanisms are likely to participate in the pathogenesis of DCM. Interleukin‐23 receptor ( IL‐23R ) gene polymorphisms have been previously found to be associated with autoimmune diseases. To assess the role of IL‐23R in DCM, we examined three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in IL‐23R gene, namely, rs1884444, rs11465817 and rs10889677. A total of 176 DCM patients and 216 controls were included in the study, and all SNPs were genotyped by polymerase chain reaction–restriction fragment length polymorphism. Our results showed that SNP rs10889677, but not rs1884444 and rs11465817, had association with DCM in Chinese Han population. The results suggest that IL‐23R polymorphisms appear to play an important role in the susceptibility of DCM in Chinese Han population.

Abstract: In this study, a continuous cell line (named as CPB ) was established from Siniperca chuatsi brain and has been subcultured 〉 140 times. CPB cell line predominantly consisted of fibroblast‐like cells that could grow better in Leibovitz's L‐15 supplemented with 10% foetal bovine serum at 28° C. Polymerase chain reaction amplification of 18s recombinant (r)RNA confirmed the origin of this cell line from S. chuatsi . The CPB cell line was cryopreserved at different passage levels and revived successfully with 80–90% survival. The cell line was further characterized by chromosome number and transfection. The CPB cells were highly susceptible to infectious spleen and kidney necrosis virus ( ISKNV ) with a titre of 6·58–6·62 log TCID 50 ml −1 and numerous ISKNV particles were observed in the cytoplasm by transmission electron microscopy. At the same time, ISKNV infection was confirmed by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction, immunodot blot and individual challenge experiments. The development and characterization of a new brain cell line from S. chuatsi were described in this study and it could be used as an in vitro tool for propagation of ISKNV and gene expression studies.
