Kurzfassung: Mobile edge computing (MEC) is an emerging technology that provides cloud services at the edge of network to enable latency-critical and resource-intensive E-healthcare applications. User mobility is common in MEC. User mobility can result in an interruption of ongoing edge services and a dramatic drop in quality of service. Service migration has a great potential to address the issues and brings inevitable cost for the system. In this paper, we propose a service migration solution based on migration zone and formulate service migration cost with a comprehensive model that captures the key challenges. Then, we formulate service migration problem into Markov decision process to obtain optimal service migration policies that decide where to migrate in a limited area. We propose three algorithms to resolve the optimization problem given by the formulated model. Finally, we demonstrate the performance of our proposed algorithms by carrying out extensive experiments. We show that the proposed service migration approach reduces the total cost by up to 3 times compared to no migration and outperforms the general solution in terms of the total expected reward.

Kurzfassung: In mobile multimedia applications, deep learning has received significant interest. Due to the limited computation and storage resources of mobile devices, however, general training methods are hardly suited for mobile multimedia computing. For this reason, we propose an adaptive momentum training (FWAdaBound) algorithm to reduce computation and storage cost, where the Frank-Wolfe method is employed. Furthermore, we rigorously prove the regret bound in order that O T 3 / 4 can be achieved, where T is a time horizon. Finally, the convergence, cost-reduction, and generalization ability of FWAdaBound are validated through various experiments on public datasets.

Kurzfassung: This paper presents spatial interpolation techniques to produce finer-scale daily rainfall data from regional climate modeling. Four common interpolation techniques (ANUDEM, Spline, IDW, and Kriging) were compared and assessed against station rainfall data and modeled rainfall. The performance was assessed by the mean absolute error (MAE), mean relative error (MRE), root mean squared error (RMSE), and the spatial and temporal distributions. The results indicate that Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) method is slightly better than the other three methods and it is also easy to implement in a geographic information system (GIS). The IDW method was then used to produce forty-year (1990–2009 and 2040–2059) time series rainfall data at daily, monthly, and annual time scales at a ground resolution of 100 m for the Greater Sydney Region (GSR). The downscaled daily rainfall data have been further utilized to predict rainfall erosivity and soil erosion risk and their future changes in GSR to support assessments and planning of climate change impact and adaptation in local scale.

Kurzfassung: The guided filter is a novel explicit image filtering method, which implements a smoothing filter on “flat patch” regions and ensures edge preserving on “high variance” regions. Recently, the guided filter has been successfully incorporated into the process of fuzzy c-means (FCM) to boost the clustering results of noisy images. However, the adaptability of the existing guided filter-based FCM methods to different images is deteriorated, as the factor ε of the guided filter is fixed to a scalar. To solve this issue, this paper proposes a new guided filter-based FCM method (IFCM_GF), in which the guidance image of the guided filter is adjusted by a newly defined influence factor ρ . By dynamically changing the impact factor ρ , the IFCM_GF acquires excellent segmentation results on various noisy images. Furthermore, to promote the segmentation accuracy of images with heavy noise and simplify the selection of the influence factor ρ , we further propose a morphological reconstruction-based improved FCM clustering algorithm with guided filter (MRIFCM_GF). In this approach, the original noisy image is reconstructed by the morphological reconstruction (MR) before clustering, and the IFCM_GF is performed on the reconstructed image by utilizing the adjusted guidance image. Due to the efficiency of the MR to remove noise, the MRIFCM_GF achieves better segmentation results than the IFCM_GF on images with heavy noise and the selection of the influence factor for the MRIFCM_GF is simple. Experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the presented methods.

Kurzfassung: Objective . To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Jiang Zhi Granule (JZG), a Chinese herbal formula, in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver (NAFL). Methods . A multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel clinical trial was conducted for 24 weeks in 224 patients with NAFL at 6 university-affiliated hospitals. Patients were randomized 1 : 1 to receive JZG and placebo, respectively. Primary outcome was the change of liver to spleen ratio (L/S ratio) over computed tomography (CT). Secondary outcomes included body mass index (BMI), serum triglyceride (TG), and total cholesterol (TC) levels. Results . Of all the 224 eligible patients, 221 patients were analyzed in the full analysis set (FAS), 205 in the per protocol set (PPS), and 3 patients were withdrawn prematurely. For FAS, JZG significantly increased L/S ratio from 0.74 ± 0.21 to 0.99 ± 0.24 compared to that from 0.79 ± 0.18 to 0.85 ± 0.27 in placebo group ( P = 0.0011 ). For PPS, it showed an increase of 0.26 ± 0.23 of L/S ratio in the patients on JZG versus 0.07 ± 0.22 in those on placebo ( P = 0.0003 ). Superiority of JZG over placebo was also observed with greater reduction in BMI ( P 〈 0.05 ) in both FAS and PPS. No observable difference in decrease of serum TC and TG was recorded ( P 〉 0.05 ). There were no serious adverse events (AEs) in the study process and safety indices were normal in both groups. Conclusions . The Chinese herbal formula JZG was found to be superior to placebo in increasing L/S ratio and reducing BMI in NAFL patients. It was also well tolerated in patients and might be a safe and effective medicine for NAFL.

Kurzfassung: Brain organoids have been considered as an advanced platform for in vitro disease modeling and drug screening, but numerous roadblocks exist, such as lack of large-scale production technology and lengthy protocols with multiple manipulation steps, impeding the industrial translation of brain organoid technology. Here, we describe the high-speed and large-scale production of midbrain organoids using a high-throughput screening-compatible platform within 30 days. Micro midbrain organoids (µMOs) exhibit a highly uniform morphology and gene expression pattern with minimal variability. Notably, µMOs show dramatically accelerated maturation, resulting in the generation of functional µMOs within only 30 days of differentiation. Furthermore, individual µMOs display highly consistent responsiveness to neurotoxin, suggesting their usefulness as an in vitro high-throughput drug toxicity screening platform. Collectively, our data indicate that µMO technology could represent an advanced and robust platform for in vitro disease modeling and drug screening for human neuronal diseases.

Kurzfassung: Background . Waardenburg syndrome is an uncommon genetic condition characterized by at least some degree of congenital hearing loss and pigmentation deficiencies. However, the genetic pathway affecting the development of stria vascularis is not fully illustrated. Methods . The transcript profile of stria vascularis of Waardenburg syndrome was studied using Mitf-M mutant pig and mice models. Therefore, GO analysis was performed to identify the differential gene expression caused by Mitf-M mutation. Results . There were 113 genes in tyrosine metabolism, melanin formation, and ion transportations showed significant changes in pig models and 191 genes in mice models. In addition, there were some spice’s specific gene changes in the stria vascularis in the mouse and porcine models. The expression of tight junction-associated genes, including Cadm1, Cldn11, Pcdh1, Pcdh19, and Cdh24 genes, were significantly higher in porcine models compared to mouse models. Vascular-related and ion channel-related genes in the stria vascularis were also shown significantly difference between the two species. The expression of Col2a1, Col3a1, Col11a1, and Col11a2 genes were higher, and the expression of Col8a2, Cd34, and Ncam genes were lower in the porcine models compared to mouse models. Conclusions . Our data suggests that there is a significant difference on the gene expression and function between these two models.
