    Abstract: Porous MnO@C core-shell nanowires were prepared via a simple and facile method. The morphologies, the phase purity, the mass contents, and the BET surface area of the composite were characterized by SEM, XRD, TGA, and N 2 adsorption test, respectively. When the composite served as an anode for lithium-ion batteries, it showed superior electrochemical performances. The MnO@C composite presented a reversible capacity of 448.1 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at the current rate of 200 mA g −1 .

    Abstract: Background . Conflicting findings have been reported regarding the sex-specific association between serum uric acid (SUA) level and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) risk, and no study has explored the association between the change in hyperuricemia status and T2DM risk. The study was aimed at exploring the sex-specific association of baseline SUA and changes in hyperuricemia status with T2DM risk. Methods . We included 37,296 eligible adults without T2DM at the first examination who attended the baseline examination and at least one follow-up annual examination. Cox and logistic regression models were used to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) and odds ratios (ORs) with their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for T2DM risk associated with baseline SUA and the change in hyperuricemia status, respectively. Results . During a median follow-up of 3.09 years, of 37,296 eligible adults, 2,263 developed T2DM. Compared with the first SUA quartile, higher quartiles were associated with an increased risk of T2DM in women (HR 1.78, 95% CI 1.17-2.71 for Q3 and 1.93, 1.27-2.93 for Q4; P trend 〈 0.001 ) but not in men. Compared with women with a persistent normal SUA level at baseline and the last follow-up, T2DM risk increased significantly among those whose SUA status changed from normal at baseline to hyperuricemia at the last follow-up (OR 1.71, 95% CI 1.12-2.55) and those with persistent hyperuricemia at baseline and the last follow-up (OR 2.37, 95% CI 1.60-3.46). However, for men, a nonsignificant association was found between the change in hyperuricemia status and T2DM risk. Conclusions . Baseline SUA and the change in hyperuricemia status were associated with T2DM risk only among women. The findings suggest the importance of monitoring SUA levels and maintaining them within a normal range for preventing or reducing incident T2DM in Chinese women.

    Abstract: Background . Diabetic patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) suffer from low quality of life (QOL). We aim to assess the effectiveness of auricular acupressure for QOL improvement in these patients. Materials and Methods . Sixty-two participants were randomly assigned to an auricular or a control arm in a randomized controlled trial. Participants in the auricular arm were instructed to perform auricular acupressure 3–5 times per day for 3 months, when they were receiving conventional treatments. Participants in the control arm received conventional treatments only. The primary outcome was the summarized score of Kidney Disease and Quality of Life Short-Form (KDQOL-SF) at 3 months after randomization. The secondary outcomes included the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36), glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Results . The summarized KDQOL differed significantly between the acupressure (76.6, 95% CI, 72.2 to 81.0) and the control group (61.8, 95% CI, 57.7 to 65.9). Similar results were found in the SF-36 scores. HbA1c and eGFR were not found to be significantly different between the arms and neither were the adverse events. Conclusion . Auricular acupressure was well tolerated in diabetic patients with chronic kidney diseases receiving hemodialysis. Future research is needed to confirm these results.

    Abstract: The aim was to evaluate the protective effects of total flavones of Elaeagnus rhamnoides (L.) A. Nelson (TFE) against vascular endothelial injury in blood stasis model rats and explore the potential mechanisms preliminarily. The model of blood stasis rat model with vascular endothelial injury was induced by subcutaneous injection of adrenaline combined with ice-water bath. Whole blood viscosity (WBV), histological examination, and prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), and fibrinogen (FIB) were measured. Meanwhile, the levels of Thromboxane B2 (TXB 2 ), 6-keto-PGF 1 α , von Willebrand factor (vWF), and thrombomodulin (TM) were detected. In addition, Quantitative Real-Time PCR (qPCR) was performed to identify PI3K, Erk2, Bcl-2, and caspase-3 gene expression. The results showed that TFE can relieve WBV, increase PT and APTT, and decrease FIB content obviously. Moreover, TFE might significantly downregulate the levels of TXB 2 , vWF, and TM in plasma and upregulate the level of 6-keto-PGF 1 α in plasma. Expressions of PI3K and Bcl-2 were increased and the expression of caspase-3 was decreased by TFE pretreatment in the rat model. Consequently, the study suggested that TFE may have the potential against vascular endothelial injury in blood stasis model rats induced by a high dose of adrenaline with ice-water bath.

    Abstract: Globally, cyanobacteria blooms frequently occur, and effective prediction of cyanobacteria blooms in lakes and reservoirs could constitute an essential proactive strategy for water-resource protection. However, cyanobacteria blooms are very complicated because of the internal stochastic nature of the system evolution and the external uncertainty of the observation data. In this study, an adaptive-clustering algorithm is introduced to obtain some typical operating intervals. In addition, the number of nearest neighbors used for modeling was optimized by particle swarm optimization. Finally, a fuzzy linear regression method based on error-correction was used to revise the model dynamically near the operating point. We found that the combined method can characterize the evolutionary track of cyanobacteria blooms in lakes and reservoirs. The model constructed in this paper is compared to other cyanobacteria-bloom forecasting methods (e.g., phase space reconstruction and traditional-clustering linear regression), and, then, the average relative error and average absolute error are used to compare the accuracies of these models. The results suggest that the proposed model is superior. As such, the newly developed approach achieves more precise predictions, which can be used to prevent the further deterioration of the water environment.

    Abstract: Many studies have demonstrated that anti-dsDNA IgG is closely associated with lupus nephritis. Recently, it was found that activation of the fibroblast growth factor-inducible 14 (Fn14) signaling pathway damages glomerular filtration barrier in MRL/lpr lupus-prone mice. However, MRL/lpr mice have high titers of serum autoantibodies other than anti-dsDNA IgG. The aim of this study was to further explore the effect of Fn14 deficiency on anti-dsDNA IgG-induced glomerular damage in severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) mice that have no endogenous IgG. Fn14 deficiency was generated in SCID mice. The murine hybridoma cells producing control IgG or anti-dsDNA IgG were intraperitoneally injected into mice. In two weeks, the urine, serum, and kidney tissue samples were harvested from mice at sacrifice. It showed that the injection of anti-dsDNA IgG, but not control IgG hybridoma cells, induced proteinuria and glomerular damage in SCID mice. Between the wild-type (WT) and knockout (KO) mice injected with anti-dsDNA IgG hybridoma cells, the latter showed a decrease in both proteinuria and glomerular IgG deposition. The histopathological changes, inflammatory cell infiltration, and proinflammatory cytokine production were also attenuated in the kidneys of the Fn14-KO mice upon anti-dsDNA IgG injection. Therefore, Fn14 deficiency effectively protects SCID mice from anti-dsDNA IgG-induced glomerular damage.

    Abstract: Aim. Traditional sedation management consists of doctors adjusting the dosage of sedative drugs or adding other drugs in combination according to the evaluation of nurses; the nurses then execute the orders. The nurses’ passive execution in the process is not the ideal model for continuous evaluation and observation of sedation. This study aims to investigate the application and effects of nurse-provided procedural sedation and analgesia for patients in intensive care unit. Methods. The experimental group consisted of 354 heart surgery patients who received procedural sedation and analgesia from nurses from November 2020 to August 2021. The control group consisted of 301 patients who had had heart surgery and received the traditional sedation management program from January to October 2020. The differences in levels of the sedative effect, delirium, and unplanned extubation of patients between these two groups were compared. Results. There were no significant differences in baseline characteristics between the two groups ( P 〉 0.05 ). It was found that both insufficient sedation and excessive sedation decreased in the experimental group when compared to the control group, while the appropriate proportion of sedation increased (72.41% versus 37.98%); the difference was statistically significant ( P 〈 0.05 ). The incidence of delirium was lower for patients in the experimental group than for patients in the control group (37.01% versus 66.45%); the difference was statistically significant ( P 〈 0.05 ). The incidence of unplanned extubation caused by patient factors was lower for the experimental group than for the control group, but the difference was not statistically significant ( P 〉 0.05 ). Conclusion. The programmed sedation scheme led by nurses can improve the sedation effect and reduce the incidence of delirium. Implications for Practice. The management team gives the sedative goal and establishes the standard flowchart. The sedation management led by the nurse according to the goal and flowchart is better than the traditional sedation management.

    Abstract: The effect of porous sound-absorbing concrete slabs on railway noise reduction is examined in this paper. First, the acoustical absorption coefficients of porous concrete materials with various aggregate types, gradations, fibre contents, and compaction indexes are measured in the laboratory. The laboratory results show that porous concrete that uses a composite of expanded perlite and slag as aggregate can not only obtain good acoustical absorption properties but also satisfy mechanical requirements. Also, the gradation of the combined aggregate has a significant effect on the acoustic absorption performance of the porous concrete, with an optimal aggregate gradation of 1~3 mm. Furthermore, the fibre content and compaction index affect both the strength and the acoustic absorption property of the porous concrete, with the optimum value of 0.3% and 1.6, respectively. Then, the findings from the laboratory studies are used to make porous sound-absorbing concrete slabs, which are applied in a test section. The measurements indicate that porous sound-absorbing concrete slabs can significantly reduce railway noise at different train speeds and that the amount of the noise reduction changes roughly linearly with speed when the train is traveling at less than 200 km/h. The maximum noise reduction is 4.05 dB at a speed of 200 km/h.

    Abstract: Background. Pathological changes of the adrenal gland and the possible underlying molecular mechanisms are currently unclear in the case of atherosclerosis (AS) combined with chronic stress (CS). Methods. New Zealand white rabbits were used to construct a CS and AS animal model. Proteomics and bioinformatics were employed to identify hub proteins in the adrenal gland related to CS and AS. Hub proteins were detected using immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence assays, and Western blotting. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) was used to analyze the expression of genes. In addition, a neural network model was constructed. The quantitative relationships were inferred by cubic spline interpolation. Enzymatic activity of mitochondrial citrate synthase and OGDH was detected by the enzymatic assay kit. Function of citrate synthase and OGDH with knockdown experiments in the adrenal cell lines was performed. Furthermore, target genes-TF-miRNA regulatory network was constructed. Coimmunoprecipitation (IP) assay and molecular docking study were used to detect the interaction between citrate synthase and OGDH. Results. Two most significant hub proteins (citrate synthase and OGDH) that were related to CS and AS were identified in the adrenal gland using numerous bioinformatic methods. The hub proteins were mainly enriched in mitochondrial proton transport ATP synthase complex, ATPase activation, and the AMPK signaling pathway. Compared with the control group, the adrenal glands were larger and more disordered, irregular, and necrotic in the AS+CS group. The expression of citrate synthase and OGDH was higher in the AS+CS group than in the control group, both at the protein and mRNA levels ( P 〈 0.05 ). There were strong correlations among the cross-sectional areas of adrenal glands, citrate synthase, and OGDH ( P 〈 0.05 ) via Spearman’s rho analysis, receiver operating characteristic curves, a neural network model, and cubic spline interpolation. Enzymatic activity of citrate synthase and OGDH increased under the situation of atherosclerosis and chronic stress. Through the CCK8 assay, the adrenal cell viability was downregulated significantly after the knockdown experiment of citrate synthase and OGDH. Target genes-TF-miRNA regulatory network presented the close interrelations among the predicted microRNA, citrate synthase and OGDH. After Coimmunoprecipitation (IP) assay, the result manifested that the citrate synthase and OGDH were coexpressed in the adrenal gland. The molecular docking study showed that the docking score of optimal complex conformation between citrate synthase and OGDH was -6.15 kcal/mol. Conclusion. AS combined with CS plays a significant role on the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis, promotes adrenomegaly, increases the release of glucocorticoid (GC), and might enhance ATP synthesis and energy metabolism in the body through citrate synthase and OGDH gene targets, providing a potential research direction for future related explorations into this mechanism.
