    Abstract: Toexplore the correlation between blood pressure in the supine position and target organ damage in subjects over 60 years of age. Methods In 2444 individuals, we investigated the association of systolic blood pressure (SBP) in the supine position with the target organ damage indices microalbuminuria (ALBU), brachial–ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV), and carotid intima–media thickness (IMT). Supine hypertension (SH) is defined as systolic blood pressure ≥ 140 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure ≥ 90 mmHg. Subjects were assigned to either the SH group (1275 cases) or the non-SH group (1169 cases). Results The levels of ALBU, baPWV, and IMT, as well as the percentage of participants with ALBU  〉  30 mg/L, baPWV ≥ 1400 cm/s, and IMT ≥ 1 mm, were significantly higher in the SH group than in the non-SH group. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that SH was an independent risk factor for baPWV and IMT, but the relationship with ALBU was not statistically significant after correction for confounding factors. Conclusions SH is a risk factor for target organ damage, as expressed by the indices baPWV and IMT. The association of SH with kidney damage requires further study.

    Abstract: Bioassay-guided isolation studies of the extract of Canthium horridum Bl. stem led to the isolation of ten compounds: (+)-syringaresinol (1), scoparone (2), scopoletin (3), 3′-methoxy-4′-hydroxy- trans-cinnamaldehyde (4), sinapic aldehyde (5), syringic acid (6), mannitol (7), vanillic acid 4- O-β-D-glucopyranoside (8), β-daucosterol (9), and β-sitosterol (10). Compounds 1-10 were reported for the first time from this species, and compounds 1, 4, 5, 6, and 8 from the genus. The antimicrobial activities of the isolated compounds were studied; 6 had the highest activity against Bacillus subtilis, but 1 showed good activity against Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus. Compounds 2, 4 and 6 also inhibited the growth of these three bacteria. None of the compounds demonstrated inhibitory activity against Aspergillus niger.

    Abstract: We assessed the clinical effects of high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) oxygen therapy and a standard oxygen atomizer mask on the respiratory tract in patients with hypostatic pneumonia. Methods We included patients with hypostatic pneumonia in this retrospective cohort study. Patients were provided continuous airway humidification by continuous oxygen atomization using either an HFNC or standard oxygen mask. Arterial blood gas analysis, the dyspnea score, inflammatory-related parameters, and adverse events of patients in the two groups were compared. Results Fifty-five patients had HFNC delivery and 57 had a standard oxygen atomizer mask. After 7 days of treatment, patients in the HFNC group had a higher partial pressure of arterial blood oxygen/fraction of inspired oxygen ratio (268.12±28.44 vs 238.28±30.04) and lower partial pressure of arterial blood carbon dioxide (38.02±8.84 vs 49.27±7.84 mmHg) than those in the standard oxygen mask group. The dyspnea score and inflammatory-related parameters in the HFNC group were significantly lower than those in the standard oxygen mask group. The incidence of adverse events was lower in the HFNC group than in the standard oxygen mask group. Conclusion HFNC therapy relieves clinical symptoms more quickly than a standard oxygen mask and reduces the incidence of adverse events.

    Abstract: The current study aimed to investigate the relations of three single nucleotide polymorphisms of matrix metalloproteinase-9 gene, and single nucleotide polymorphisms-smoking interaction to subarachnoid hemorrhage risk. The optimal pattern of the interaction among single nucleotide polymorphisms and smoking was selected by generalized multifactor dimensionality reduction. The association between the three single nucleotide polymorphisms within the matrix metalloproteinase-9 gene was analyzed by logistic regression test. As well as genetic risk of subarachnoid hemorrhage interactions with smoking, the risk of subarachnoid hemorrhage in carriers with the rs3918242 (T) was significantly higher than in carriers carrying CC (genotype: CT + TT vs. CC), adjusted OR (95% CI) = 1.58 (1.25–2.03), and in carriers carrying rs17576- (genotype: AG + GG vs. AA), adjust OR (95% CI) = 1.62 (1.19–2.13). However, after adjusting for covariates, we did not find any direct association between rs17577 and subarachnoid hemorrhage risk. The generalized multifactor dimensionality reduction model shows a potential relation between rs3918242 and smoking risk for subarachnoid hemorrhage ( P = 0.0010). After covariates adjustment, current smokers with rs3918242-CT or TT genotype, compared to never-smokers with rs3918242-CC genotype, OR (95% CI) = 2.57 (1.74–3.46), have a higher subarachnoid hemorrhage risk. Our study showed that the rs3918242 (T) and rs17576 (G), the cross reaction between rs3918242 and smoking increased the risk of subarachnoid hemorrhage. Impact statement Matrix metalloproteinase-9 ( MMP-9) is a possible candidate gene for some diseases, including metabolic syndrome, stroke, coronary artery disease (CAD). But to date, limited data focused on the relationship between MMP-9 gene SNPs and SAH susceptibility. The purpose of this study was to evaluate SNPs of MMP-9 gene and their interaction with environmental factors with SAH risk based on a Chinese population.

    Abstract: Introduction: Exercise is recommended for patients undergoing hemodialysis to decrease morbidity and mortality. However, their exercise level is lower than healthy people. Understanding reasons behind their sedentary lifestyle is required. Traditional Chinese culture may have a profound impact on patients’ perceptions of exercise, particularly with regard to the relationship of overwork and kidney function and family members’ attitudes toward patients’ participation in exercise. Therefore, we sought to explore the facilitators and barriers to exercise influenced by traditional Chinese culture. Methods: We conducted semistructured interviews with 44 Chinese patients residing in Nantong of Jiangsu Province undergoing hemodialysis, aged 25 to 77 years. Interview questions focused on their perceptions of, attitudes to, and experiences with exercise. Each interview was digitally recorded and lasted from 40 to 60 minutes. Conventional content analysis was used to understand facilitators and barriers to exercise within their experience and perceptions. Findings: We found that specific Chinese cultural health beliefs informed by traditional Chinese medicine strongly affected patients’ attitudes and behaviors toward exercise. Participants in this study tended to believe that overwork impairs kidney functions and viewed strenuous exercise as overwork. Although participants admitted the benefits of exercise, they rejected strenuous exercise and regarded nearly all modalities of exercise with or without facilities (except walking) as strenuous exercise. The most common barriers to exercise were lack of motivation, bad weather, negative attitudes of family members toward patients’ doing exercise, and insufficient exercise information resources. The most common facilitators found in this study were their increased physical well-being and confidence from exercise. Group exercise supported by family members and positive attitudes toward obtaining exercise information were also motivators. Discussion: Chinese patients undergoing hemodialysis reported more barriers than facilitators to exercise. Perceptions and attitudes toward exercise informed by traditional Chinese culture may be hidden barriers to exercising. Our findings indicated that culturally sensitive and patient-centered exercise interventions for Chinese patients are urgently needed.

    Abstract: Four 2-phenylthiazole derivatives are synthesized, characterized, and evaluated as cholinesterase inhibitors. The structures of the 2-phenylthiazole derivatives are confirmed by 1 H and 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies, and Hirshfeld surfaces analysis. Hirshfeld surface analysis of the prepared compounds showed C–H···O intermolecular interactions. The cholinesterase inhibition activities of the synthesized compounds are tested by Ellman’s method. [2-(4-Benzyloxyphenyl)-thiazol-4-yl]-(3,5-dimethylpiperidin-1-yl)-methanone showed the best acetylcholinesterase inhibition activity with an IC 50 value of 8.86 µM and the best butyrylcholinesterase inhibition activity with an IC 50 value of 1.03 µM. A docking study demonstrates that the same compound interacts with the catalytic anionic site and peripheral anionic site of acetylcholinesterase and the catalytic anionic site of butyrylcholinesterase.

    Abstract: Two new compounds, (+)-rumphiin (3) and polyalthurea (7), together with seven known ones, 3,4,5-trimethoxy benzoic acid (1), (-)-seselinone (2), cannabisin D (4), allantoin (5), oxostephanine (6) and a mixture of β-sitosterol (8) and stigmasterol (9) were isolated from the stems of Polyalthia rumphii. The chemical structures of 3 and 7 were elucidated by the combination of spectroscopic data, and the absolute configuration of 3 at C-2 was determined by the matrix method to be R. All compounds were evaluated for their cytotoxicity on four human cancer cell lines, which demonstrated that 3 was a moderate bioactive lignan, and 6 showed significant anticancer activity against SPC-A-1 and BEL-7402 cell lines with IC 50 values of 1.47 and 1.73 μg/mL, respectively.

    Abstract: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a multifactorial inflammatory disease. The role of genetic variations of related genes in the development of CRS and severity of symptoms is unknown in Southwestern Chinese populations. Objective We selected candidate CRS-related genetic polymorphisms and evaluated the associations that were different according to the presence of nasal polyp, asthma, and allergic rhinitis (AR) in a Southwestern Chinese population. Detailed phenotypes were compared among different genotypes. Methods In 452 CRS patients and 591 healthy controls, clinico-epidemiological information was collected and 23 previously reported CRS-related single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were genotyped. Genotypes were determined using a Sequenom MassARRAY SNP genotyping system. Clinical disease measures including the sinonasal outcome test, visual analogue scale (VAS), and symptom severity VAS were evaluated for each patient. The association between CRS, genotypes, asthma, AR, and symptoms was analyzed. The effect of sex, age, body mass index, and status of smoking was considered. Results Statistically significant genotypic association with CRS was observed with an IL1RL1 genetic polymorphism (rs13431828; odds ratio [OR] = 1.45; 95% confidence interval [CI] , 1.06–1.99; P = .02). Similar association was observed with rs13431828 in subgroups of CRS with nasal polyps (OR = 1.53; 95% CI, 1.03–2.29; P = .04), asthma (OR = 2.08; 95% CI, 1.14–3.79; P = .02), and AR (OR = 1.59; 95% CI, 1.06–2.39; P = .02). No significant association with other SNPs was observed. The evaluated genetic polymorphisms were not associated with clinical symptom scores. Conclusion This study replicated rs13431828 as being associated with CRS in Southwestern Chinese. rs13431828 was also significantly associated with CRS patients who have concurrent allergic nasal diseases.

    Abstract: This article unravels the evolution of the Chinese OTT TV and triple-network convergence in the larger context of global media and communication policy. The balancing act between market innovation and content gatekeeping has led State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, the regulator of the broadcast sector, to subjugate the relevant players of OTT TV and triple play to “select commercialization,” a logic that inevitably led to convoluted policy configurations. The authors pursue a market power analysis that lays bare the competing and/or collaborative relationships between multiple actors in China’s online TV value chain, that is, cable broadcasters, telecom operators, Internet companies, OTT licensees, and smart TV makers. The article ends with a proposition that the future of the Chinese online TV industry is increasingly organized as an ecosystem economy.
