Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to establish if Marshallian and Jacobian knowledge spillovers affect job creation in the green energy sector. Whether these two effects exist is important for the number of jobs created in related fields and jobs pushed away in other sectors. In the analysis, the production efficiency, in terms of jobs and job spillovers, from inventions in solar, wind and energy efficiency, is explored through data envelopment analysis (DEA), based on the Malmquist productivity index, and tobit regression. A panel dataset of American and European firms over the period of 2002–2017 is used. The contribution to the literature is to show the role of the spillovers from the same technology sector (Marshallian externalities), and of the spillovers from more diversified activity (Jacobian externalities). Since previous empirical evidence concerning the innovation effects on the production efficiency is yet weak, the paper attempts to bridge this gap. The empirical findings suggest negative Marshallian externalities, while Jacobian externalities have no statistical impact on the job creation process. The findings are of strategic importance for governments who are developing industrial strategies for renewable energy.

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to look at the factors driving labour creation in Russia, while paying attention to the role of innovation policy. The study considers innovation variables with indicators linked to social conditions (social filter component) and geographical spillovers for 85 regions during the period 2010-2016. Design/methodology/approach In particular, the study uses latitude and longitude coordinates to compute the distance between Russian regions according to the Haversine formula. In this manner, it measures the spillovers as the weighted sum of R & D capital stock on the basis of computed distance, according to the accessibility index procedure. Findings The finding is very important in terms of policy implications for supporting employment. As the results stress that own innovation produces labour creation effects, while knowledge spillovers are labour-saving, the study could conclude that regional innovation policy may have undetermined the objective of an efficient level of absorptive capacity able to benefit positively from external innovation. Originality/value The study contributes to the literature by exploring whether geographical spillovers are labour-friendly or labour-saving in Russia.

Abstract: The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) elaborately encompass a global goal for sustainable consumption and production (Goal 12: SDGs), thus providing potential drivers and/or pathways to attaining sustainable consumption. In view of this global goal, this study examined the role of real income per capita, urbanization and especially inbound tourism in domestic material consumption for the panel of OECD countries. The study is conducted for the period of 1995 to 2016 by employing the panel quantile approach. Interestingly, an inverted U-shaped relationship between outbound tourism and domestic material consumption is established across the quantiles, thus indicating that sustainable domestic consumption is achievable after a threshold of domestic material consumption is attained. In addition, achieving sustainable consumption through economic or income growth is a herculean task for the OECD countries because the current reality indicates that income growth triggers higher consumption of domestic materials. However, the results suggest that urbanization is a recipe for sustainable domestic consumption since there is a negative and significant relationship between the two parameters across the quantiles. Nevertheless, the study presents relevant policy for efficient material and resources utilization and that is suitable to drive the SDGs for 2030 and other country-specific sustainable ambitions.

Abstract: The purpose of this article is three-fold: first, it tests whether inter-industry R & D spillovers are positively associated with the likelihood of experiencing high growth episodes among R & D intensive firms in Europe, US and Japan; second, it tests whether such a relationship is conditional on their level of absorptive capacity (ACAP); third, it tests whether the acquisition of foreign patents, an additional channel to access external knowledge, trigger high growth episodes among a sub-set of R & D intensive firms. For the empirical analysis, we focus on R & D intensive manufacturing firms observed between 2002 and 2017, located in Europe, US and Japan. The empirical findings support the hypotheses suggesting that: a) inter-industry R & D spillovers are associated with the likelihood of experiencing high growth episodes; b) ACAP conditions the relationship between inter-industry R & D spillovers and the likelihood of experiencing high growth episodes and c) shares of foreign patents are positively associated with the likelihood of experiencing high growth episodes among high-tech R & D intensive firms. Abstract: The work at hand presents a new extensive panel dataset for energy economics, econometrics and policy. The referred dataset is made of 5000 observations circa, including 6 energy economics variables and the majority of the world’s countries (n = 136), extended for 6 years (2009–2014). Data can be used for diverse energy econometrics studies, especially for socioeconomic and environmental aspects of energy innovation and efficiency investigations. The analysed data can be exploited for further analyses to improve our understanding of resilience and vulnerability aspects of the domestic industry, examined at the global scale. To this end, several databases were chosen from the IEA, the World Bank and their partners. Data were collected, cleaned, treated, harmonised and analysed to return a new panel dataset. Both the new data organisation and the descriptor can be used as tools and guidance to perform sustainability, innovation and entrepreneurial inquiries and analyses, focusing on energy economics, econometrics and development policy.

Abstract: The transition from the linear economy to the circular economy exhibits some criticalities that can be solved through the identification of factors pushing and pulling the transition itself. By adopting a public good perspective in analysing the main features of the circular business models, this study underlines how the sharing economy business models are well integrated and complementary to some features of the circular economy, representing a strong pulling factor. Other loops of the circular economy need an explicit push factor, individuated in a strong impulse to eco-efficiency, to be reached through consistent incentives to invest in R & D for eco-innovations. Seven case studies are investigated in their aims, feasibility and implementation to support the interpretative framework.

Abstract: The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between competition and innovation through the knowledge spillover effect. In particular, we investigate whether R & D competition is sensitive to economic shock. To this end, we consider a period of time related also to the 2008 financial crisis. We implement an empirical analysis of 879 worldwide R & D-intensive firms. In order to measure technological proximity, we use two approaches: one based on Jaffe industry weight matrix, relative to patents distributed across technology classes; one based on trade intensity between sectors using input–output matrix data. The empirical results show a positive effect of R & D externalities on competitive interactions before the beginning of crisis and a negative one after it. These findings are robust with respect to the procedure employed in the estimation method.
