Abstract: ABSTRACT. Some recent studies have shown an extremely high level of serum cholesterol level among Finnish children. The aim of the present study was to test the effect of a “cholesterol lowering diet” on serum lipids and blood pressure among 36 children aged 8‐18 years residing in two semirural communities in North Karelia, Finland. After a baseline period of two weeks on conventional diets, the proportion of energy derived from fat in the diet was reduced from the baseline level of 35% to 24%, and the ratio of polyunsaturated/saturated fats was increased from the baseline level of 0.18 to 0.61, during a 12‐week intervention period. The children then changed back to their normal diet during a five‐week switch‐back period. The mean serum total cholesterol decreased 15% during the intervention, and then increased to nearly the initial level during the switch‐back period. Similar changes were observed in HDL‐cholesterol and also to some extent in apoproteins Al, All and B. Blood pressure was not affected, although systolic blood pressure decreased during intervention. We conclude that the high level of serum cholesterol in Finnish children is to a great extent caused by the local dietary pattern and can be decreased by dietary modification.

Abstract: ABSTRACT. The effects of sexual maturation, height, weight, body mass index, triceps skinfold and heart rate on systolic and diastolic blood pressure were studied among 13‐year‐old children in North Karelia, Eastern Finland. Cross‐sectional and two‐year longitudinal data were analyzed for 851 children in the six schools participating in the North Karelia Youth Project. In boys, the levels of both systolic and diastolic blood pressure increased during puberty. In girls, the level of systolic blood pressure did not change, but diastolic blood pressure increased as much as in boys. The change in systolic blood pressure was found to be associated with physical growth and stage of sexual maturation. Physical growth seemed to contribute more to the change in the level of systolic blood pressure than the stage of sexual maturation did.

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Serum total cholesterol, HDL‐cholesterol and blood pressure were studied among 15‐year‐old school children in Eastern Finland. The mean serum total cholesterol was 4.47 mmol/l in boys and 4.86 mmol/l in girls; mean HDL‐cholesterol was 1.29 mmol/l and 1.46 mmol/l, respectively. The mean blood pressure was 135/65 mmHg in boys and 126/67 mmHg in girls. Obese children had higher blood pressure and lower HDL‐cholesterol levels than others. Among boys sexual maturation decreased the HDL‐cholesterol level. Children whose parents had histories of cardiovascular disease did not have higher cholesterol or higher blood pressure levels than other children. Children at high risk apparently cannot be screened on the basis of parents' history of cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract: ABSTRACT. A dietary survey concerning 1348 persons aged 25–64 was carried out in connection with the first FINMONICA risk factor survey in the three monitoring areas, North Karelia and Kuopio in the east, and Turku—Loimaa in the south‐west in 1982. Three‐day food records were used in the dietary assessment. The fat content of the diet in men was 38–39 % of energy in all areas, whereas in women it was about 36 % in the east compared to 38 % in the south‐west. The ratio of polyunsaturated to saturated fat of the diet was lower in the east than in the southwest in both sexes (0.25 vs. 0.31). This seemed to be the result of higher milk and butter consumption in the east. The regional differences in the quality of dietary fats seemed to be the result of both different occupational structures and different dietary habits within each occupational group, especially among women.
