    Farmers' Interest in Continuing Organic Rice Farming in Yogyakarta

    Abstract: The study aims to determine the interests of farmers and the factors that influence farmers' interest in continuing organic rice farming in Sleman Regency. The study conducted in Sleman Regency, which is an area that has applied the principles of organic rice farming by taking about 70 organic farmers. The data was analyzed descriptively and multiple regression analysis. The results showed (1) The interest of farmers to continue organic rice farming based on internal needs and emotional are verry powerful, while social motives are included in the strong category. It is known that the interest of farmers in continuing organic rice farming in Sleman Regency is said to be very high in meeting physical and spiritual needs, high in social relations, and very high in paying attention to organic rice. (2) Factors that influence the overall interest of farmers in terms of internal needs, social motives, and emotions are age, formal education, non-formal education, farming experience, income, land area, frequency of presence of extension workers, assistance, and number of dependents.

    Abstract: Salassae Village, Bulukumba district is an organic village by the application of agriculture organic farming since 2011. The application of organic and conventional farming system is closely related to each farmers’ perceptions. This research aims to determine the perception on farmers on the application of natural farming system, analyze the factors that related to farmers ‘perception on natural farming system, and analyze the farmers’ effort in Salassae Village. This research was carried out by interview and questionnaire method to 67 farmers, divided by 25 organic farmers and 42 conventional farmers. This research uses descriptive analysis techniques, and spearman rank correlation test. The results of the analysis show that the farmers' perception on natural farming system has different perception. Perception of natural farmers is categorized good, while perception of conventional farmers is categorized good enough. Overall, farmers' perception of the application of the natural farming system shows a good category with a score of 75%. The factor of farmers’ perception on the application of natural farming system is social interaction. Farmers need a convincing understanding that organic rice farming is not difficult. Thus, social interaction needs to be improved in shaping the perception of rice farmers towards organic rice farming.

    Strategy for Developing Organic Rice Farming in Sleman Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta

    Abstract: Sleman Regency is a centre for organic agriculture development in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, as evidenced by the large number of farmer groups that have received organic certification. Sayegan is one of the districts in Sleman Regency that is developing organic rice although it is still in the transition stage from conventional to organic rice, namely semi-organic rice. The research objective is to determine the strategy used for developing organic rice farming. The sample in this study consisted of 12 key persons, namely the Head of the Technical Implementation Unit (UPT), Field Agricultural Extension Officer (PPL), the Officer for Controlling Plant Pest Organisms (POPT), 4 heads of farmer groups, and 5 farmers who own land of 1 hectare. The research was conducted by survey in Sayegan District. The analysis technique uses Analysis Hierarchy Process (AHP). The results showed that the strategy for developing organic rice farming in Sleman Regency consisted of (1) the provision of production facilities of good quality on time and in the right amount, (2) encouraging farmers to use labelled superior seeds, and (3) increased motivation, knowledge, and skills of organic rice cultivation.
