    Kurzfassung: Purpose. Ephrin B1 (EFNB1), the Eph-associated receptor tyrosine kinase ligand, is suggested to have an important function in neurodevelopment. However, its contribution to glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) remains uncertain. This study aimed to determine the prognostic power and immune implication of EFNB1 in GBM. Methods. We first identified differentially coexpressed genes within GBM relative to noncarcinoma samples from GEO and TCGA databases by WGCNA. The STRING online database and the maximum cluster centrality (MCC) algorithm in Cytoscape software were used to design for predicting protein-protein interactions (PPI) and calculating pivot nodes, respectively. The expression of hub genes in cancer and noncancer tissues was verified by an online tool gene expression profile interactive analysis (GEPIA). Thereafter, the TISIDB online tool with Cox correlation regression method was employed to screen for immunomodulators associated with EFNB1 and to model the risk associated with immunomodulators. Results. Altogether 201 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were discovered. After that, 10 hub genes (CALB2, EFNB1, ENO2, EPHB4, NES, OBSCN, RAB9B, RPL23A, STMN2, and THY1) were incorporated to construct the PPI network. As revealed by survival analysis, EFNB1 upregulation predicted poor overall survival (OS) for GBM cases. Furthermore, we developed a prognostic risk signature according to the EFNB1-associated immunomodulators. Kaplan–Meier survival analysis and receiver operating characteristic method were adopted for analysis, which revealed that our signature showed favorable accuracy of prognosis prediction. Finally, EFNB1 inhibition was found to block cell proliferation and migration in GBM cells. Conclusion. The above results indicate that EFNB1 participates in cancer immunity and progression, which is the candidate biomarker for GBM.

    Kurzfassung: Machine vision technology enables the continuous and nondestructive monitoring of leaf responses to different nutrient supplies and thereby contributes to the improvement of diagnostic effects. In this study, we analysed the temporal dynamics of rice leaf morphology and colour under different nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) treatments by continuous imaging and further evaluated the effectiveness of dynamic characteristics for identification. The top four leaves (the 1st incomplete leaf and the top three fully expanded leaves) were scanned every three days, and all images were processed in MATLAB to extract the morphological and colour characteristics for dynamic analysis. Subsequently, the mean impact value was applied to evaluate the effectiveness of dynamic indices for identification. According to the results, higher nutrient supply resulted in a faster leaf extension rate and a lower developing rate of chlorosis, and the influence of N deficiency on leaf growth was the greatest, followed by P deficiency and then K deficiency. Furthermore, the optimal indices for identification were mainly calculated from morphological characteristics of the 1st incomplete leaf and colour characteristics of the 3rd fully expanded leaf. Overall, dynamic analysis contributes not only to the exploration of the plant growth mechanism but also to the improvement of diagnostics.

    Kurzfassung: Special symptoms could be observed on rice leaves when exposed to potassium deficiency, and these symptoms usually display differently under different potassium levels, which offer a foundation for rapid nutrition diagnosis. In this research study, two years of hydroponic experiments on rice (providing 5 levels of potassium nutrition from extremely short to normal) were carried out and the leaf images were acquired by optical scanning at four growth periods. To diagnose the potassium nutrition content, the special symptoms including the yellowish brown leaf margin and the necrotic spots were segmented and quantized by the object-oriented method from leaf images, and the 6 further spectral characteristics of leaf were extracted by the image color analyzing function of MATLAB software. Based on the relationship between potassium content and leaf characteristics, the G value (average value of G channel in the RGB color model) calculated from the entire leaf and leaf tip, the area of yellowish leaf margin, and the number of necrotic spots were applied in the establishment of the identification model of potassium stress by using the support vector machine (SVM). The results indicated that the overall identification accuracies of rice potassium nutrition contents were 90%, 94%, 94%, and 96% at four different growth periods (productive tillering stage, invalid tillering stage, jointing stage, and booting stage), respectively. The data obtained from another year were used to validate the model, and the identification accuracies were 94%, 78%, 80%, and 84%, respectively. Generally speaking, the extraction of the specific symptoms by using object-oriented segmentation is an extension of machine vision technology in diagnosing potassium deficiency, and its application in diagnosing plant nutrition is valuable for the quantization of effective characteristics and improvement of identification accuracy.

    Kurzfassung: Content-based image retrieval is a branch of computer vision. It is important for efficient management of a visual database. In most cases, image retrieval is based on image compression. In this paper, we use a fractal dictionary to encode images. Based on this technique, we propose a set of statistical indices for efficient image retrieval. Experimental results on a database of 416 texture images indicate that the proposed method provides a competitive retrieval rate, compared to the existing methods.

    Kurzfassung: The acceptable noise level (ANL) was defined by subtracting the background noise level (BNL) from the most comfortable listening level (MCL) (ANL = MCL − BNL). This study compared the ANL obtained through different methods in 20 Chinese subjects with normal hearing. ANL was tested with Mandarin speech materials using a loudspeaker or earphones, with each subject tested by himself or by the audiologist. The presentation and response modes were as follows: (1) loudspeaker with self-adjusted noise levels using audiometer controls (LS method); (2) loudspeaker with the subject signaling the audiologist to adjust speech and noise levels (LA method); (3) earphones with self-adjusted noise levels using audiometer controls (ES method); and (4) earphones with the subject signaling the audiologist to adjust speech and noise levels (EA method). ANL was calculated from three measurements with each method. There was no significant difference in the ANL obtained through different presentation modes or response modes sound. The correlations between ANL, MCL, and BNL obtained from each two methods were significant. In conclusion, the ANL in normal-hearing Mandarin listeners may not be affected by presentation modes such as a loudspeaker or earphones nor is it affected by self-adjusted or audiologist-adjusted response modes. Earphone audiometry is as reliable as sound field audiometry and provides an easy and convenient way to measure ANL.
