Abstract: The highly selective synthesis of 4- tert-butyltoluene from toluene with tert-butyl alcohol over zeolite catalysts was performed in the liquid phase. The order of activity for alkylation over zeolite catalysts was as follows: H-BEA 〉 H-Y 〉 H-MOR 〉 H-ZSM-5. The main reaction products observed were 4- tert-butyltoluene and 3- tert-butyltoluene. 2- tert-Butyltoluene was completely absent in the product. A kinetic study of the reaction of toluene with tert-butyl alcohol over pure H-BEA (Si/Al = 25) was performed. Experimental runs were conducted at 160, 170, 180 and 190 °C and reaction times of up to 240 min. Based on the results obtained, a simplified kinetic model was developed. The kinetics could be described by the pseudo first-order model.

Abstract: A model natural gas consisting of hydrogen sulfide, nitrogen and oxygen mixture was used to simulate materials to test the performance of an amine-modified MCM-41 adsorbent prepared by the impregnation method. The adsorbent was characterised by X-ray diffraction analysis, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that more molecules are able to penetrate the pores following modification, resulting in rapid structural collapse, thus lowering the diffraction intensity. Although the capacity of amine-modified MCM-41 decreased the physical adsorption, chemisorption increased significantly. (3-Aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane/MCM-41 was found to exhibit a good performance for H 2 S desulfurisation. At 45 °C the breakthrough time was 186 min, the saturated sulfur capacity was 134.38 mg g −1 and the degree of desulfurisation was 54.19%. The adsorption isotherm and kinetics were investigated and the relevant parameters were obtained. The results showed that the adsorption isotherm could be well fitted by the Langmuir model and the maximum adsorption capacities increased with increase of temperature. The adsorption kinetics could be represented by the Bangham model, which suggested that chemical reaction seemed significant in the rate-controlling adsorption step. The adsorption process was spontaneous and exothermic.

Abstract: A series of rare-earth-modified M-Ni 2 P/MCM-41 (M=Pr, Nd, Ce, La, Y) catalysts has been prepared by means of a temperature-programmed reduction method. The prepared catalysts were characterised by X-ray diffraction, N 2 -adsorption specific surface area measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and CO uptake. The effects of rare earth metals on catalyst activity for hydrodesulfurisation (HDS) of dibenzothiophene (DBT) were studied. The results showed that the addition of rare earth metals increases the surface area and pore volume of the catalysts. Rare earth metals can promote formation of the Ni 2 P phase and induce a better Ni 2 P dispersion but they do not change the mechanism of HDS of DBT. Pr-Ni 2 P/MCM-41 exhibited the highest HDS activity. At reaction temperature of 300 °C, pressure of 3.0 MPa, hydrogen/oil volume ratio of 500, and weight hourly space velocity(WHSV) of 6.0 h −1 , the addition of Pr increased the conversion of HDS of DBT by 16.7%.

Abstract: A series of bimetal La- and Ni-promoted S 2 O 8 2– /ZrO 2 –Al 2 O 3 (SZA) catalysts were prepared at different calcination temperatures. The effect of calcination temperature on the characteristics and performance of La-Ni-S 2 O 8 2– /ZrO 2 –Al 2 O 3 (La-Ni-SZA) catalysts towards the n-pentane isomerisation reaction was determined. In order to relate the catalytic activity to their physical, chemical and textural features, the catalysts were characterised by various techniques including X-ray powder diffraction, thermogravimetric-differential thermal analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), FTIR spectra of adsorbed pyridine and BET specific surface area and H 2 temperature-programmed reduction analyses. The results showed that tetragonal ZrO 2 was the dominant phase in the calcination temperature range of 600–700 °C. The change of textural features of the catalysts results from transformation of the ZrO 2 crystal phase and the collapse of the partial pore structure occurs at the high calcination temperature of 700 °C. The sulfur could be lost at calcination temperatures 〉 660 °C. The total acidity of the catalysts at a desorption temperature of 350 °C decreases in the order: La-Ni-SZA-650 〉 La-Ni-SZA-600 〉 La-Ni-SZA-700 〉 La-Ni-SZA-550. The La-Ni-SZA catalyst calcined at 650 °C had more tetragonal phase ZrO 2 , higher acidity, higher sulfur content, a larger BET surface area and exhibited the best catalytic performance, with the isopentane yield reaching a maximum 66.5% at a lower reaction temperature of 150 °C, with a selectivity to isopentane of 98.5%.

Abstract: A numerical analysis based on previous experiment has been carried out on T-shaped concrete-filled steel tubular columns subjected to constant axial compressive load and cyclic lateral loads. Tensile bar stiffeners were introduced to be welded on inside surfaces of steel tube to postpone its local buckling and to enhance the confinement of steel tube for concrete. A modified fiber-based method was developed to establish numerical modeling program of specimens’ cyclic behavior, incorporating the effect of stiffeners on postponing steel tube’s local buckling and the confinement for concrete. The reciprocating movement of inflection point along frame column is also considered in the numerical program. A simplified arc-length method was employed as iterative control algorithm of the numerical model. Horizontal load–displacement hysteretic curves of specimens were calculated with the numerical model and verified with test results. A restoring force model based on experimental investigation was proposed as simplified method for engineering practice.

Abstract: A new type of composite structure, the composite box girder with corrugated steel webs (CSWs) and trusses, is proposed recently. In order to investigate the structural behavior under positive and negative bending moments, flexural tests of the continuous girder were carried out, and the failure modes, deformation patterns, strain distribution, and development of the concrete cracks were investigated. Finite element analysis was conducted to investigate the effect of the range of concrete in the steel tube and the thickness of CSWs on the flexural behavior. The experimental and numerical results show that the test beam has a good ductility and integrity under flexural load. The contribution of CSWs to the flexural bearing capacity is very small and can be neglected. Besides, the plane section assumption is still valid when only top concrete slab and bottom steel tubes are concerned. The concrete filled in bottom steel tubes increases the stiffness and the bearing capacity of the girder. Equations to calculate the flexural bearing capacity under positive and negative bending moments were put forward and then verified with experimental results.

Abstract: A series of carbon nanotube (CNT)-supported amorphous Co–B alloy catalysts were prepared by selectively depositing Co–B particles inside and/or outside of CNTs. The effects of the nanotubular structure on the physiochemical properties of the amorphous Co–B alloys were studied. It was found that the internal loading enhanced the thermal stability of the amorphous Co–B alloys and inhibited the loss of Co compared with the external loading. The internal loading also increased the proportion of elemental Co in the Co–B alloys, while the loading method did not change the valence states of either Co or B. The internally loaded Co–B particles exhibited higher hydrogenation activity for m-chloronitrobenzene ( m-CNB) than the externally loaded analogue. The kinetics of m-CNB hydrogenation were also studied.

Abstract: A series of transition metal oxide-modified HBEA (M x 0 y /HBEA) zeolite catalysts were prepared by the wetness impregnation method, and investigated for the alkylation of toluene with tert-butanol to synthesise 4- tert-butyltoluene (4-TBT). Their physico-chemical properties were characterised by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller and NH 3 temperature-programmed desorption methods. M x 0 y /HBEA zeolite showed higher para-selectivity than parent HBEA due to its improved structural and acidic properties. Though the toluene conversion of M x 0 y /HBEA catalyst decreased, the 4-TBT selectivity increased significantly at 190 °C after 4 h. The narrowed pores after loading the M x 0 y prompted an increase in selectivity for 4-TBT by increasing the shape selectivity. In addition, the decrease in strong acid sites increased selectivity for 4-TBT by suppressing further isomerisation of the 4-TBT formed on acid sites. Among all the modified HBEA zeolites, Fe 2 0 3 /HBEA exhibited the best catalytic activity and para-selectivity. The factors affecting the reaction over Fe 2 0 3 /HBEA have also been investigated extensively.

Abstract: To improve the photocatalytic activity of TiO 2 , a series of NiO–TiO 2 nanotubes (NTbs) is prepared by impregnating TiO 2 nanotubes in a solution of NiCl 2 ·6H 2 O at different concentrations. Self-organized TiO 2 nanotubes are prepared by a two-step anodization process. Scanning electron microscopy images show that large particle agglomerates are formed for higher precursor concentrations, and X-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy results indicate that the atomic percentages of Ni in the NiO–TiO 2 NTbs prepared with precursor concentrations of 100 and 300 mM are 1.95% and 4.23%, respectively. Electronic lifetime measurements show that the recombination rate of photogenerated electron–hole pairs is lower for NiO–TiO 2 NTbs compared to that of TiO 2 . Specifically, the recombination rate of the sample prepared at 50 mM is the lowest, which is associated with the longest electron lifetime. Compared to unmodified TiO 2 nanotubes, NiO–TiO 2 NTbs exhibit improved results for the photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B.

Abstract: To improve the performance of the PID controller for a steel strip deviation control system (SSDCS), an enhanced artificial bee colony algorithm (EABC) is proposed to optimize PID controller gains (EABC-PID). The proposed EABC changes the candidate solution equation to balance its explorative and exploitative capabilities. The experiment presents a detailed comparison of EABC-PID and four bio-inspired algorithms based PID controllers considering four types of objective functions. Simulation results show that EABC-PID proves to be superior for SSDCS compared to four bio-inspired algorithms based PID controller in terms of convergence, dynamic adjustment, and robustness.
