Kurzfassung: New molecular and morphological analyses of the relationships of 77 specimens of potamonautid freshwater crabs collected from all parts of Madagascar support the monophyly of the island’s freshwater crab fauna and verify most of the existing taxa. The phylogenetic tree identified several new lineages that represent four new genera and 10 new species, and found Foza Reed & Cumberlidge, 2006 to be paraphyletic. The present work is the first of a series of articles reporting on these discoveries that provide an improved understanding of the relationships between the endemic potamonautid species found on this tropical island. We describe a new species of Malagasya Cumberlidge & Sternberg, 2002 from a phytotelmic habitat in northeast Madagascar, and establish Agoragen. nov. to accommodate Thelphusa goudoti H. Milne Edwards, 1853. Both of these new taxa are recognized based on combinations of morphological characters and molecular data. The new species of Malagasya is distinguished from the other two species of this genus, which are illustrated here for comparative purposes. Agora goudotin. comb. is endemic to Madagascar, and is compared with and distinguished from the eight other genera of freshwater crabs occurring in that country.

Kurzfassung: Male pleopods, pleon, and gonopods 1 and 2 of primary brachyuran freshwater crabs have been used for well over 100 years as important taxonomic characters to distinguish between species, genera, and families. In contrast, while there have been a number of studies of female dimorphic brachyuran characters, including two families of primary freshwater crabs, their pleopods have been virtually ignored and presumed to be uninformative with respect to systematics. Consequently, we provide for the first-time descriptions and images of the female pleon, pleopods, egg attachment sites, and telson of representatives of five primary freshwater crab families: Potamidae, Potamonautidae, Gecarcinucidae, Pseudothelphusidae, and Trichodactylidae. For preliminary comparative purposes, similar details are also presented for species representing two Heterotremata families, e.g., Epialtidae and Portunidae, and four Thoracotremata families e.g., Gecarcinidae, Grapsidae, Sesarmidae, and Varunidae. This morphological comparative study of female characters provides a new dataset for family-level comparisons of freshwater crabs. As a result, two groups of primary freshwater crabs are recognized: a revised Potamoidea Ortmann, 1896 for Potamidae, Potamonautidae, Deckeniidae, Gecarcinucidae, Pseudothelphusidae, and Epiloboceridae, and Trichodactyloidea comprising Trichodactylidae. Although all of the non-trichodactylid freshwater crab families are morphological heterotremes with male coxal gonopores and female sternal gonopores, their current Heterotremata assignment is here being questioned. From new evidence presented here, this group of primary freshwater Brachyura may be more properly positioned outside of Heterotremata, as a sister group of Thoracotremata. This use of novel female diagnostic characters, however, supports the continued assignment of Trichodactylidae to Heterotremata.

Kurzfassung: A new genus of freshwater crab, Crosnautesn. gen., and two species, C. ranomafanan. sp. and C. alainusn. sp., are described from forested highlands in southeastern Madagascar. The new genus can be distinguished on phylogenetic and morphological grounds. Crosnautesn. gen. has a suite of morphological characters that differentiate it from all other Malagasy genera: a carapace with a faint and interrupted postfrontal crest, short ambulatory legs, a mandibular palp with a conspicuous anterior lobe, a long third maxilliped exopod that extends across the width of the merus, and eyestalks and corneas of normal length and size. The two new species can be differentiated from each other by the size of the distal tooth on the cheliped carpus, the width of the first gonopod, and the length of the ambulatory legs. The new species are endemic to Madagascar and are compared to, and distinguished from, Foza raimundiReed & Cumberlidge, 2006, the sister taxon to the new genus, as well as to all of the other Madagascan genera of freshwater crabs.

Kurzfassung: Nheena n. gen. is established to accommodate the Madagascan freshwater crab Hydrothelphusa vencesi Cumberlidge, Marijnissen & Thompson, 2007 that was formerly included in Hydrothelphusa A. Milne-Edwards, 1872. In addition, N. museonatoran. sp. and N. artiareginan. sp. are established and these new taxa are recognized based on a combination of morphological characters and previous molecular data; are all illustrated. The three species assigned to Nheenan. gen. are compared with each other and with other species of freshwater crabs found in Madagascar, and a map of their distribution is included.
