Audiometric testing is an integral part of a hearing conservation program. Newer techniques, which more closely approach the state-of-the-art, including computerized testing, and telephone line operation, are available for testing large numbers of people with results that are in good agreement with standard testing techniques. These techniques, as they apply to preemployment audiograms, initial testing, and annual retests, are discussed. A large number of audiograms from several major industries have been reviewed. The results of this review indicates that approximately 50% of the employees on the initial test show significant high-frequency hearing loss, approximately 10% of the employees show hearing loss severe enough to be seen by Clinics or physicians for further testing, and approximately 5% of the employees have to be retested because of inaccurate results. On annual retests, approximately 15% of the employees show additional hearing loss with hearing conservation programs in effect. Criteria and techniques for evaluating hearing conservation programs are suggested, along with criteria for evaluating additional hearing loss on annual retests.
