Abstract: This research was carried out to determine the nutritional value of pearl millet, and to evaluate their utilization as energetic source in broiler diets from 1 to 21 days old. Two experiment were conducted: in the first, the chemical composition (dry matter, crude protein, ether extract, calcium and phosphorus) and gross energy, apparent metabolizable energy corrected by nitrogen balance were determined. In the second experiment, the performance of broilers from 1 to 21 days old fed diets with 0, 10, 20, 30 and 40% of pearl millet were determined. A completely randomized design, in a 5 × 2 factorial arrangement (level of millet and sex), with four replicates and 20 birds per experimental unit, was used. The determined values of chemical composition were: dry matter (88.53%), gross energy (3,604 kcal/kg), crude protein (12.71%), crude fiber (5.40%), ether extract (3.10%), calcium (0.029%) and phosphorus (0.31%) and, in the second experiment, apparent metabolizable energy corrected by nitrogen balance (2,656 kcal/kg). The analyzed traits were: feed intake, weight gain and feed/gain ratio. The performance of broilers fed rations with higher levels pearl millet was better, which could be related to the increase of oil level in diet. The inclusion of pearl millet up to 20% is recommended in the rations for broilers from 1 to 21 days old.

Abstract: With the objective to determine the tryptophan nutritional requirements for male and female broilers, during the initial phase, 800 male and female chicks, from 1 to 21 days of age, with average initial weight of 44.7 and 44.6 g, respectively, were used. The birds received a deficient tryptophan basal diet (.180%). A completely randomized blocks experimental design, in a 5 x 2 factorial arrangement (treatment x sex), with four replicates per sex and 20 chicks per experimental unit, was used. The treatments consisted on a basal diet supplemented with five tryptophan levels (0, .015, .030, .045, and .060%). Chick's performance was evaluated, and the tryptophan requirement values were estimated by means of the polynomial regression models and LRP. The tryptophan true digestibility coefficient of the basal diet was 90.33%. The supplementations with L-tryptophan influenced the males weight gain, however, there was no effect on the feed: gain, suggesting a minimum recommendation of .212 and .195% for total tryptophan and digestible, respectively. However, for the females, the supplementations with L- tryptophan influenced the weight gain and the feed: gain, suggesting a minimum recommendation of .208 and .191% for total and digestible tryptophan, respectively.

Abstract: Four assays were carried out to determine the apparent metabolizable energy (AME) and the corrected apparent nitrogen metabolizable energy (AMEn) of ten feeds for poultry at different poultry ages. The feeds studied were: corn grain, soybean meal, ground sorghum, wheat bran, integral rice bran, two kinds of feather meal, two kinds of poultry viscera meal and spray-dried plasma. The method of total excreta collection was used to determine the AME and AMEn values. The broiler chicks were distributed on a completely randomized experimental design, with 11 treatments, six replications, with different number of animals by replication according to the assay. In the first assay, 528 male broiler chicks in the period from 10 to 17 days of age were used, with eight animals per replication. In the second assay, 396 male broiler chicks in the period from 26 to 33 days of age were used, with six animals per replication. In the third assay, 264 male broiler chicks in the period from 40 to 47 days of age were used, with four animals per replication. In the fourth assay, 132 roosters were used, with two animals per replicate. There was an effect of age on the AME and AMEn values of the following feeds: soybean meal, ground sorghum, integral rice bran, two kinds of feather meal and spray-dried plasma, where the oldest broilers provided the highest AME and AMEn values. Wheat bran was affected by age only for the AMEn values.

Abstract: A serie of experiments was carried out with the objective to determine the nutritive value of nine poultry by-product meal and six feather meal for chickens. Four different methodologies were used to determine the values of N corrected apparent (AMEn) and true corrected (TMEn) metabolizable energy, where the traditional method was used with chicks and cocks and the Sibbald method was used with roosters and cecectomized cocks. The estimated AMEn and TMEn values of viscera meal ranged from 3,051 to 3,621 and from 2,866 to 3,583 kcal/kg, respectively. Feathers meal values ranged from 2,952 to 3,629 and from 2,703 to 3,671 kcal/kg for AMEn and TMEn, recpectively. Among the methodologies to determine the feeds energy, the correlations were low, so the differences on the feeds energy values were due to the methodology used.

Abstract: This research was carried out using 360 laying hens (180 Lohmann LSL and 180 Lohmann Brown), to establish the nutritional requirement of digestible methionine+cystine in the period from 54 to 70 weeks of age. A completely randomized experimental design, in a 5 × 2 factorial arrangement (5 levels of digestible methionine+cystine and 2 laying hen strain), with 6 replications and 6 hens per experimental unit, was used. The treatments consisted of diets supplemented with 5 levels of DL-methionine (98%), resulting in 0.492, 0.544, 0.596, 0.648 and 0.700% of digestible methionine+cystine in diets. The parameters analyzed were: egg production, egg weight, egg mass, feed intake, digestible methionine+cystine intake, feed conversion, egg components (albumen, yolk and shell), internal quality (Haugh unit, albumen index and yolk index), the percentage of eggs does not trade and the body weight gain. The levels of methionine+cystine digestibles studied influenced the egg production, egg weight, egg mass, feed intake, digestible methionine+cystine intake, feed conversion, weight yolk and shell, and the body weight gain. The requirements of digestible methionine+cistine were estimated by polynomial regression models. The digestible methionine+cystine requirement, estimated for the laying hens light-weight was of 0.645% in the ration, corresponding to daily intake per hen of 712 mg and 12.5 g of methionine+cystine digestibles/g egg mass produced. For the laying hens semi-heavy was of 0.655% in the ration, corresponding to daily intake per hen of 723 mg and 13.2 g of methionine+cystine digestibles/g egg mass produced.

Abstract: Eight hundred Avian Farms chicks (50% males; 50% females) from 1 to 21 days of age, averaging 40.5 g, fed a basal diet (3.000 kcal ME/kg and 21.1% CP) deficient in sodium (0.017%) and supplemented with NaCl, corresponding to the levels of 0.077, 0.137, 0.197, 0.257 and 0.317% total sodium, were used to determine the sodium requirement. A completely randomized design, in a 5x2 (sodium levels x sex) factorial design, with four replicates and 20 chicks per experimental unit, were used. Weight gain, feed intake, feed:gain ratio, adrenal absolute weight and relative weight, carcass yield and carcass dry matter were evaluated, and the requirements were estimated by means of the polynomial regression models. The sodium supplementary levels affected weight gain, feed intake, feed:gain ratio and adrenal relative weight in both sexes, with no significant effect of the studied levels on the adrenal absolute weight, carcass yield and carcass dry matter. It was demonstrated that the biometric evaluations (adrenal weight) are not good parameters to determine the requirement, because of the high coefficient of variation values obtained in the study. Based on the birds performance, the minimum recommended sodium requirements, estimated by the polynomial model, were of 0.256 and 0.255%, for males and females, respectively.

Abstract: The true digestibility coefficients of amino acids (TDCaa) were determined and digestible amino acids prediction equations obtained, using the chemical composition of 11 feedstuffs. The feedstuffs evaluated were: brown flour meal, wheat flour, wheat grain, wheat grain residue, wheat germ, cookies residue, macaroni residue and, four wheat brans. The method of "precision feeding" with cecectomized adult rooster was utilized. A randomized complete design was used, with 11 feedstuffs and 1 fast, using six replications with 1 rooster per experimental unit. The average of TDC of amino acids, for the wheat bran 1, wheat bran 2, wheat bran 3, wheat bran 4, brown flour meal, wheat flour, cookies residue, macaroni residue, wheat grain, wheat grain residue, wheat germ meal were 80,1; 76,7; 71,8; 74,5; 84,1; 94,1; 77,9; 90,1; 86,0; 90,3 e 93,1%, respectively. The best prediction equations obtained for the TDCaa values were those using crude protein (CP) and/or ether extract (EE) for lysine and CP and/or neutral detergent fiber (NDF) for methionine, methionine + cystine, threonine and the average of the essential amino acids. The equations were: Lys = -0,8805 + 0,0755*CP + 0,0268*EE (R² = 98%), Met = -0,0377 + 0,0183*CP - 0,0020*NDF (R² = 99%), M+C = 0,0982 + 0,0273*CP - 0,0021*NDF (R² = 92%), Threo = -0,2107 + 0,0401CP - 0,0020*NDF (R² = 96%), Essen = -0,1530 + 0,0451*CP - 0,0024*NDF (R² = 98%).

Abstract: Four experiments were accomplished using 720 white-egg pullets and 720 brown-egg pullets from 0 to 6 age weeks, were allotted to a completely randomized design with five calcium levels (.70, .80, .90, 1.00, and 1.10%) or five levels of available phosphorus (.30, .35, .40, .45, and .50%), with four replicates and 18 pullets for experimental unit. The experimental diets were formulated with soybean meal and corn to contain 2900 kcal of metabolizable energy/kg of diet, 18% crude protein, .70% calcium for calcium experiments and .30% of available phosphorus for phosphorus experiments. Diets and water were ad libitum fed during the experimental period. The evaluated characteristics were weight gain, feed intake, feed: gain ratio, bone resistance, bone ash and bone calcium (calcium experiments) or bone phosphorus (experiments of available phosphorus). Requirements of .937% and .961% of calcium and .420% and .423% of available phosphorus for white-egg pullets and brown-egg pullets, respectively, were estimated.
