Abstract: PURPOSE: To evaluate the attribution of false belief in individuals with Down syndrome. METHODS: Eleven children of both genders with Down syndrome and ages between four and eight years composed the Down Group (DG). All subjects used verbal communication, had mild to severe mental retardation, and were attended at the same institution. In addition, 85 children within normal development with ages between four and six years were recruited at an elementary school, constituting the Control Group (CG). The Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT) was used to compare the level of verbal comprehension of the groups, and the adaptation of the "smarties test" was used to assess the attribution of false belief. RESULTS: The analysis of the PPVT showed a statistically significant difference between the groups, with the DG presenting scores below the third standard deviation, and the CG, below the first standard deviation. Regarding the false belief analysis, the CG presented increasing scores in all questions as the age group increased. The same was not observed for the DG, whose subjects with best results were those that attended speech-language therapy for a longer time at the institution. No correlation was found between receptive vocabulary level and the ability of false belief. CONCLUSION: The CG showed a better performance in all questions of the false belief test, when compared to the DG. Thus, it was possible to evaluate false belief in children with Down syndrome.

Abstract: RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi produzir análise multimodal exploratória sobre a atenção compartilhada.

Abstract: ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to produce exploratory multimodal analysis on joint attention. We used the ELAN tool: software with resources for temporal and special synchronization for verbal and non-verbal modalities that facilitate the visualization and annotation of interactional contexts. Excerpts of ten minutes of speech and language pathology evaluation of the child with suspected ASD and of another child with typical development matched by age group and gender, were analyzed and transcribed. Spontaneous occurrences of the child's gaze were investigated: a) Towards the interlocutor's eyes. b) Towards toys or play. c) Towards the interlocutor's eyes and toys (Joint Attention). The occurrences of look direction differed between children in a quantitative and qualitative way. The child with suspected ASD did not produce an episode of joint attention, nor did he direct his gaze to the interlocutor. There were 56 occurrences of gazing towards the toys. The typical child produced 18 occurrences of joint attention, and whenever he directed his eyes to the interlocutor's eyes, he did so with the intention of sharing the toy or play. We also observed 37 occurrences of gazing towards the toy or play. From the exploratory analysis produced by ELAN tool, it was possible to observe that there were differences in the number of occurrences and look direction between the evaluated children and to verify that the joint attention was absent in the child with ASD risk.

Abstract: ABSTRACT Purpose The aim of this study was to evaluate a program for implementing of the PECS in children with non-verbal ASD or with minimal verbalization in a school clinic belonging to the Unified Health System - SUS. Methods This is a longitudinal study. The sample consisted of 22 children with nonverbal ASD or with minimal verbalization; 17 boys and 5 girls, aged 6 to 12 years old. The program consisted of 24 sessions of individual speech language therapy with the presence of the family member and followed the six phases originally proposed by the PECS Training Manual. Results All children reached the first three phases. About 82% reached phase IV; 64% phase V and 19% phase VI. Family adherence was 96%. Conclusion It was possible to test a PECS implementation program in 24 sessions and verify that children were able to achieve phases of discrimination and sentence construction, besides demonstrating gain in their lexical repertoire and reduction of non-adaptative behaviors.

Resultados Todas as crianças atingiram apropriadamente as três primeiras fases.
