Abstract: The interfacial tension (IFT) of fluids plays an essential role in industrial, biomedical, and synthetic chemistry applications; however, measuring IFT at ultralow volumes is challenging. Here, we report a novel method for sessile drop tensiometry using surface acoustic waves (SAWs). The IFT of the fluids was determined by acquiring the silhouette of an axisymmetric sessile drop and applying iterative fitting using Taylor's deformation equation. Owing to physiochemical differences, upon interacting with acoustic waves, each microfluid has a different streaming velocity. This streaming velocity dictates any subsequent changes in droplet shape (i.e., height and width). We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed SAW-based tensiometry technique using blood plasma to screen for high leptin levels. The proposed device can measure the IFT of microscale liquid volumes (up to 1 μL) with an error margin of only ±5% (at 25 °C), which deviates from previous reported results. As such, this method provides pathologists with a solution for the pre-diagnosis of various blood-related diseases.

Abstract: Programmable microfluidic systems for bioparticles manipulation that could enable automated biological analysis and diagnostics have the potential to revolutionize a wide range of applications in life sciences research, clinical diagnostics, and drug discovery. Several methods such as those based on hydrodynamic force, magnetic tweezers, and dielectrophoresis can manipulate the movement of the bioparticles successfully. However, these methods must be constructed the flow structure, magnetic wire, and electrode in the microchannel respectively, which not only limits the flexibility of manipulation but also makes the sample more likely to be contaminated. In this paper, a programmable microfluidic device is developed to manipulate the microbubbles along an arbitrary trajectory in the microchannel without any structure by introducing phase-shifts to a planar standing surface acoustic wave field. The microbubbles can be transported in a square trajectory, circular trajectory and even helix trajectory via adjusting the relative phase between the excitation signals controlled by LabVIEW program. The results reveal that the microbubbles can be transported over a predetermined distance continuously until they reach the targeted locations. This acoustic programmable microfluidic device would have potential applications on drug screening, cell studies, and other biomedical applications.

Abstract: Acoustic tweezers have found potential applications in both the physical and life sciences in the past two decades due to their abilities of contactless, controllable and noninvasive trapping and manipulating micro-scale objects regardless of material transparency. Approaches to acoustic trapping of micro-objects required large field intensities. They are usually generated directly by acoustic transducer, cannot be redesigned easily, nor can the corresponding acoustic radiation forces be modulated efficiently. Recently, the artificial structures, such as phononic crystal or metamaterials, can provide a facile way of controlling the field distribution of acoustic wave. These artificial fields may have potential application in acoustic manipulation. In this work, we demonstrate that a geometrical modulated trapping force can exert on an object as it is near the surface of structured artificial brass plate at resonance frequency. The mechanism and condition of this trapping effect are discussed via the field and force analyzing, respectively.

Abstract: The dispersion relation of the acoustic field in a sub-wavelength slot (its width is smaller than the acoustic wavelength) between two identical plates immersed in an inviscid liquid is theoretically analyzed. Each plate has a phononic crystal structure consisting of periodical grooves drilled in one of outer sides of each plate. It is found that highly localization of acoustic energy can be achieved in the sub-wavelength slot when a traveling acoustic wave is incident upon the slots. The associate physical principle is as follows: The lowest anti-symmetric non-leaky A0 mode of the Lamb wave of each individual thin plate propagating as an evanescent wave extends to the liquid from opposite direction; when the width of the slot is much smaller than the characteristic decay length of the evanescent wave in the liquid, the constructive interference of evanescent waves of the both plates takes place, leading to a strong acoustic field in the slot. This system has potential to serve as an excellent candidate for the ultrasensitive microscopic chemical/biological stimulators and sensors.
