    Abstract: Oleic acid needs to be heated when it is utilized for biodiesel production, but, as a low-loss solution, oleic acid is difficult to heat by microwave. An efficient heating method for oleic acid is designed. A high loss material porous media is placed in a quartz tube, and a microwave directly heats the porous medium of the high loss material. The oleic acid flows through the pores of porous media so that the oleic acid exchanges heat during this process and rapid heating of oleic acid is achieved. A coupling model, based on the finite element method, is used to analyze the microwave heating process. The multiphysics model is based on a single mode cavity operating at 2450 MHz. An elaborate experimental system is developed to validate the multiphysics model through temperature measurements carried out for different flow velocities of oleic acid and different microwave power levels. The computational results are in good agreement with the experimental data. Based on the validated model, the effects of different sizes, porosities, and materials on microwave heating efficiency are analyzed.

    Abstract: Ghost imaging reconstructs the image based on the second-order correlation of the repeatedly measured light fields. When the observed object is moving, the consecutive sampling procedure leads to a motion blur in the reconstructed images. To overcome this defect, we propose a novel method of ghost imaging to obtain the motion information of moving object with a small number of measurements, in which the object could be regarded as relatively static. Our method exploits the idea of compressive sensing for a superior image reconstruction, combining with the low-order moments of the images to directly extract the motion information, which has the advantage of saving time and computation. With the gradual motion estimation and compensation during the imaging process, the experimental results show the proposed method could effectively overcome the motion blur, also possessing the advantage of reducing the necessary measurement number for each motion estimation and improving the reconstructed image quality.

    Abstract: The Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) is one of China’s major pieces of national infrastructure. A variable cable-net structure is used as the main supporting structure of the active reflector. The displacement of the cable net works through actuators. The realization of linkage control is a multi-degree-of-freedom and complex coupling control system. Due to factors such as the temperature difference between day and night, as well as actuator failure, the reflector control accuracy and even structural safety are affected during the position-control process of the cable net, so realizing evaluation of control accuracy and fault warning of the reflector is a significant problem. This paper proposes a pre-evaluation and health monitoring system based on advanced mechanical simulation technology. Through this system, on-site staff can expeditiously analyze the model to determine whether the cable net is currently in a safe state, predict the fatigue degree of the components, and maintain the structure when appropriate. The pre-evaluation and health monitoring system adequately ensure the stable functioning of the FAST cable net, improve the efficiency of on-site maintenance work, and markedly reduce the safety risk of the structure.

    Abstract: Calcite cement is a common type of cementation in tight sandstone reservoirs of the Upper Triassic Yanchang Formation Chang 8 Member in the Zhijing-Ansai area of the Ordos Basin, which has significant influence on reservoir densification and heterogeneity. Calcite cements affect the quality of the reservoir conspicuously. The characteristics and origins of calcite were investigated using a series of approaches from the perspective of petrography and geochemistry, including thin section observation and identification, cathode luminescence, scanning electron microscopy, AMICS analysis, LA-ICP-MS elements analysis, and carbon and oxygen isotopes analysis. The results of all analytical tests indicated that calcite cements can be divided into two types according to their occurrence and origins. Type-I calcite cements mainly occur in sandstone reservoirs near the sandstone–mudstone interface or the sandstone layers adjacent to mudstone. Generally, there is no chlorite coating around them, and they appear dark orange under cathode luminescence. The carbon source of Type-I calcite cements may be related to the compaction and drainage of mudstone. Type-II calcite cements are formed in the early stage, and their carbon source may be related to the compaction and drainage of the adjacent mudstone. Type-II calcite cements are surrounded by chlorite coating primarily present in the interior of fine-grained sandstone, showing as bright yellow under cathode luminescence. Decarboxylation of organic matter in the source rocks may provide a crucial source of carbon for Type-II calcite cements.

    Abstract: In this study, a dual interval robust stochastic dynamic programming (DIRSDP) method is developed for planning water resources management systems under uncertainty. As an extension of the existing interval stochastic dynamic programming (ISDP) method, DIRSDP can deal with two-stage stochastic programming (TSP)-based planning problems associated with dynamic features, input uncertainties, and multistage concerns. Compared with other optimization methods dealing with uncertainties, the developed DIRSDP method has advantages in addressing uncertainties with complex presentations and reflecting decision makers’ risk-aversion attitudes within its optimization process. Parameters in the DIRSDP model can be represented as probability distributions as well as single and/or dual intervals. Decision makers’ risk-aversion attitudes can be reflected through restricting the deviation of the recourse costs to a tolerance level. Water-allocation plans can then be developed based on the analysis of tradeoffs between the system benefit and solution robustness. The developed method is applied to a case of water resources management planning. The solutions are reasonable, indicating applicability of the developed methodology.

    Abstract: Recently, Streptococcus suis reference strains of serotype 20, 22, and 26 were reclassified as Streptococcus parasuis. The public health significance of S. parasuis is underestimated due to the lack of clinical isolates. In the present study, we first reported two sporadic S. parasuis infections in humans, after using full-length 16S rRNA and housekeeping genes’ phylogeny and ANI values of genome sequence comparisons to determine the species of their isolates BS26 and BS27. Compared to highly pathogenic S. suis strain P1/7, S. parasuis strains BS26 and BS27 possessed a delayed capacity to initiate lethal infection, which may attribute to the later production of higher level of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Differed to S. suis strain P1/7, S. parasuis strains did not induce significant inflammatory response in the brain of mice. Histopathological changes in liver and lungs were widely present in mice infected with S. parasuis strains. Our data indicated that the pathogenic mechanism of S. parasuis may be different from that of S. suis. Three lineages in the core-genome phylogenetic tree and ten types of cps gene cluster were found in 13 S. parasuis genomes, indicating high heterogeneity of this species. The similarity of CPS structure and antibiotic-resistant genes relative to S. suis indicated the evolutionary affinity between the two species. Our data suggested S. parasuis is a potential zoonotic pathogen and poses severe threat to health of susceptible people. Further study on the epidemiology and public health significance of S. parasuis is urgently necessary.

    Abstract: Metformin (Met) is a first-line drug for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Numerous studies have shown that Met exerts beneficial effects on a variety of neurological disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD) and Huntington’s disease (HD). However, it is still largely unclear how Met acts on neurons. Here, by treating acute hippocampal slices with Met (1 μM and 10 μM) and recording synaptic transmission as well as neuronal excitability of CA1 pyramidal neurons, we found that Met treatments significantly increased the frequency of miniature excitatory postsynaptic currents (mEPSCs), but not amplitude. Neither frequency nor amplitude of miniature inhibitory postsynaptic currents (mIPSCs) were changed with Met treatments. Analysis of paired-pulse ratios (PPR) demonstrates that enhanced presynaptic glutamate release from terminals innervating CA1 hippocampal pyramidal neurons, while excitability of CA1 pyramidal neurons was not altered. Our results suggest that Met preferentially increases glutamatergic rather than GABAergic transmission in hippocampal CA1, providing a new insight on how Met acts on neurons.

    Abstract: Different from conventional imaging, ghost imaging (GI) is an indirect modality of imaging that needs multiple measurements of the second-order correlation of data collected from two detectors. In some particular cases, the exposure time of two detectors or the rotation speed of the ground glass may not meet the need of experimental condition, resulting in motion blur that reduces the quality of the reconstructed image. In this paper, we propose a method to solve this problem. By convolving the data from the reference arm with the Hessian matrix, the intensity of the light in the data is replaced by the gradient of intensity and the influence of the motion blur in the reconstructed image can be reduced.
