    Abstract: Maintaining rice yield and reducing nitrogen (N) input are two important targets in sustainable agriculture practices. The adoption of a nitrogen-saving variety (NSV) provides a unique opportunity to achieve this. However, limited options in NSV japonica rice and a lack of information on their responses to N reduction make management decisions difficult. This study aims to explore the responses of yield and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) in NSV to N reduction. Two newly released NSVs and two popular general varieties (GVs) of japonica rice were field tested in Yangzhou, located at the lower reaches of Yangtze River of China, in two consecutive years. The results showed that for NSVs, with a 40–60% reduction in common practice N rate (300 Kg ha−1), the rice yield could maintain a record average level (p 〈 0.05), whereas the yield for the GV would drop 20–30% (p 〈 0.05). This indicates that combining the practices of adoption of NSV and N reduction to 120–180 Kg N ha−1 could balance the yield and N consumption. Moderate N reduction promotes the N accumulation and NUE, and it increases the number of tillers, the productive tiller percentage and the total amount of spikelets in the population, and increases the carbon and N metabolism of the population in the NSV. Compared with GV, NSV showed higher NUE and non-structural carbohydrate re-mobilization in the reduced N rate. The results showed that the practice of N reduction has to adopt NSV at the same time in order to maintain the grain yield level in rice.

    Abstract: In the process of cyclic loading, strain development not only presents the strain softening phenomenon, but also a strain hardening phenomenon, depending on the different values of static deflection stress. The strain hardening and strain softening characteristics of soft clay are studied by cyclic triaxial tests. The test results show that when the static deflection stress is zero, the value of cyclic cumulative strain is small, and the strain development presents the softening phenomenon. When the static deflection stress is greater than zero, the accumulation strain increases with increasing cyclic deflection stress, and the strain development present strain hardening phenomenon. Therefore, a strain softening index and strain hardening index were proposed to describe the cyclic characteristics of soil. Moreover, an equivalent cyclic creep model was established by considering the strain hardening index to describe cyclic characteristics of suction pile. The results obtained using the proposed method are in reasonably good agreement with the measured results. This can provide a new method for analyzing the cyclic characteristics of soil and the suction pile.

    Abstract: The mycotoxin deoxynivalenol (DON) is a prevalent contaminant in cereals that threatens the health of both humans and animals and causes economic losses due to crop contamination. The rapid and sensitive detection of DON is essential for food safety. Herein, a colorimetric biosensor based on horseradish peroxidase- and gold nanoparticle-encapsulated zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (HRP & Au@ZIF-8) was developed for the sensitive screening of DON. The synthesized HRP & Au@ZIF-8 probes not only held great potential for signal amplification but also exhibited stable catalytic activity even under extreme conditions, which endowed the biosensor with both good sensitivity and stability. Under the optimized conditions, qualitative measurement of DON can be achieved through visual inspection, and quantitative evaluation can be performed via absorbance measurements at a characteristic wavelength of 450 nm. The proposed method has demonstrated high sensitivity with a linear detection range of 1–200 ng/mL and a detection limit of 0.5068 ng/mL. It also presented good selectivity and reliability. Furthermore, DON in spiked cereal samples has been quantified successfully using this method. This novel approach demonstrates significant potential for the facile and expeditious detection of DON in cereal products and brings us one step closer to enhancing food safety.
