Abstract: Methyl 2-furoate (FAME2) is a model for the potential renewable biofuel of dimethyl furan-2,5-dicarboxylate, with the development of its new synthesis method. The potential energy surfaces of H-abstractions and OH-additions between FAME2 and hydroxyl radical (OH) were studied using CCSD(T)/CBS//M062X/cc-pVTZ. The subsequent isomerization and decomposition reactions were also determined for the primary radicals produced. The results showed that H-abstraction on the branched methyl group was the dominant channel and that the OH-addition reactions on the furan ring had a significant pressure dependency. The rate coefficients presented here provide important kinetic data to support future improvement of the combustion mechanism of FAME2, and present a sound basis for further research into practical fuels.

Abstract: Investigations of the equation of state of tungsten tetraboride (WB4) have been performed under nonhydrostatic compression to 85.8 GPa using radial x-ray diffraction techniques in a diamond anvil cell at room temperature. The hexagonal structure of WB4 is found to be stable up to the highest pressure of 85.8 GPa. The radial x-ray diffraction data yield a bulk modulus K0 = 319(5) GPa with K0′ = 4.1(0.2) at ψ = 54.7°. With a fixed K0′ of 4, the derived K0 is 323(1) GPa. The bulk modulus obtained from fits of diffraction data at ψ = 0° and 90° is 196(6) GPa and 507(13) GPa, respectively. The values gradually increased from ψ = 0° to 90°, showing the compressibility of the sample strongly depends on the stress environment. In addition, the compressibility of the unit cell axes (a- and c-axes) of WB4 demonstrates an almost isotropic nature with pressure increasing.

Abstract: The effect of grain boundary on electrical transportation properties is a basic physical problem and also a subject of material science and technology. In situ electrical measurement of powdered materials under high pressure provides a chance to figure out the electrical properties of grain boundaries. In this letter, the authors report an in situ impedance spectroscopy method used in conjunction with a diamond anvil cell for electrical property research of grain boundaries under high pressure. Powdered CdS was pressed up to 23GPa and an impedance arc corresponding to the grain boundary was detected. It was found that the electrical property of the grain boundary changed with pressure and could be determined by the resistance and the relaxation frequency. Pressure decreases the effective scattering section of the grain boundary to charge carriers, and finally leads to the decrease of resistance and activation energy of the grain boundary.

Abstract: Angle-dispersive synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements were performed on vaterite-type YBO3/Eu3+, GdBO3, and EuBO3, respectively, up to 41 GPa at room temperature using a diamond-anvil cell. Pressure-induced amorphization was observed in hexagonal GdBO3 with a significant compression along the c-axis. Compared to the ions of the distorted GdBO3 phase, its anions may lose their long-range order prior to the cations at high pressures. Based on the experimental pressure-volume data, the obtained bulk moduli of YBO3/Eu3+ and GdBO3 are 329 and 321 GPa, respectively, which are more than 90% larger than that of EuBO3 (167 GPa) and are presumably attributed to Gd3+ and Y3+ with a high density of d valence electrons.

Abstract: When the grain size decreases, there inevitably exists a critical size (dc) where the contribution of surface atoms to the physical properties is competitive with that of the interior atoms, giving rise to a wide variety of new phenomena. The behavior of granular materials near dc is particularly interesting because of the crossover, a continuous transition from one type of mechanism to another. In situ high-pressure x-ray diffraction experiments showed that the compression curve of nanocrystalline anatase TiO2 with grain size near dc reached a platform after about 5%–6% of deformation under hydrostatic compression. Eventually, the unit cell volume of anatase expanded at ∼14–16 GPa. We propose that the anomalous compression behavior is attributed to the formation and thickening of the stiff high density amorphous shell under high pressure, giving rise to a great arching effect at the grain boundary at the nanolevel. This process results in a remarkable difference in stress between inside and outside of the shell, generating the illusions of the hardening and the negative compressibility. This study offers a new insight into the mechanical properties of nanomaterials under extreme conditions.

Abstract: The characterization of total ionizing dose (TID) damage in COTS pinned photodiode (PPD) CMOS image sensors (CISs) is investigated. The radiation experiments are carried out at a 60Co γ-ray source. The CISs are produced by 0.18-μm CMOS technology and the pixel architecture is 8T global shutter pixel with correlated double sampling (CDS) based on a 4T PPD front end. The parameters of CISs such as temporal domain, spatial domain, and spectral domain are measured at the CIS test system as the EMVA 1288 standard before and after irradiation. The dark current, random noise, dark signal non-uniformity (DSNU), photo response non-uniformity (PRNU), overall system gain, saturation output, dynamic range (DR), signal to noise ratio (SNR), quantum efficiency (QE), and responsivity versus the TID are reported. The behaviors of the tested CISs show remarkable degradations after radiation. The degradation mechanisms of CISs induced by TID damage are also analyzed.

Abstract: The structural stability of hexagonal Nd2O3 under pressure has been investigated by in situ synchrotron angle dispersive x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy up to 53.1 GPa and 37.0 GPa, respectively. Rietveld analysis of the x-ray diffraction data indicate that the hexagonal Nd2O3 undergoes an isostructural phase transition in the pressure range from 10.2 to 20.3 GPa, accompanied by anomalous lattice compressibility and pressure-volume curve. A third-order Birch-Murnaghan fit based on the observed Pressure-Volume data yields zero pressure bulk moduli (B0) of 142(4) and 183(6) GPa for the low and high pressure hexagonal phases, respectively. Raman spectroscopy confirms this isostructural transition, the pressure dependence of the Raman modes display noticeable breaks in the pressure range of 9.7-20.9 GPa, which is consistent with the change of Nd-O bond length. The pressure coefficients of Raman peaks and the mode Grüneisen parameters of different Raman modes were also determined.

Abstract: In our previous work, we proposed a new design method for an aberration-free x-ray refractive focusing lens based on an ideal Cartesian oval shape to solve the aberration problem in x-ray compound refractive focusing. In this paper, we propose an optimization method for this new lens. By reducing the aperture of each lens, we achieve the objective of increasing the effective aperture and improving the focusing performance of the lens. The simulation of the beam propagation method shows that the focusing performance of the optimized lenses is better in compound refractive lens shape but worse in the kinoform shape. This is different from the results obtained with the conventional kinoform lens. After further comparison, we found that this is because the step height of the kinoform lens is small when the lens aperture is very small, resulting in a strong diffraction effect that weakens the focusing performance of the lens. Further modifications to the structure of the kinoform lens are needed to improve this phenomenon.

Abstract: We reported an electro-hydrodynamic shooting phenomenon of liquid metal stream. A small voltage direct current electric field would induce ejection of liquid metal inside capillary tube and then shooting into sodium hydroxide solution to form discrete droplets. The shooting velocity has positive relationship with the applied voltage, while the droplet size is dominated by the aperture diameter of the capillary nozzle. Further, the motion of the liquid metal droplets can be flexibly manipulated by the electrodes. This effect suggests an easy going way to generate metal droplets in large quantity, which is important from both fundamental and practical aspects.

Abstract: We report an alumina-encapsulated microcircuit on a diamond anvil for high-pressure and high-temperature electrical conductivity measurement. An alumina thin film was deposited on a diamond anvil as a thermal insulation layer for laser heating, on which a molybdenum film was deposited and photolithographically fabricated to a van der Pauw circuit. The introduction of the alumina layer significantly improves the laser heating performance. This specially fabricated diamond anvil permits us to measure the resistivity of (Mg0.875Fe0.125)2SiO4 at 3450K and 35GPa in a laser-heated diamond anvil cell. We expect to substantially extend the pressure-temperature scale of in situ resistivity measurement.
