    Abstract: Aim . To determine whether Zuogui Jiangtang Jieyu prescription (ZGJTJY) has hypoglycemic and antidepressant effects which are mediated by corticosterone through adjustment of 11 β -hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11 β -HSD1) and glucocorticoid (GR) levels. Materials and Methods . The diabetes-related depression rats were randomly divided into four groups: the model group, metformin (1.8 mg/kg) combined with fluoxetine (10.8 mg/kg) group, and ZGJTJY high and low dose groups. Four weeks after modeling, blood glucose, behavior, and cognitive function of depression were detected. The expressions of 11 β -HSD1 and GR in hippocampus were measured by western blotting and immunohistochemical experiments. Results . We found that (1) the treatment with ZGJTJY (10.26 g/kg) increases the motor activities and improves cognition ability. (2) ZGJTJY (10.26 g/kg) significantly relieves the disorder in blood and the relative indexes. (3) ZGJTJY (10.26 g/kg) can reduce hippocampal corticosterone expression levels and further improve hippocampus pathological changes. (4) ZGJTJY increased the expression of GR accompanied with decreasing 11 β -HSD1 in hippocampus. Conclusions . ZGJTJY inhibits the expression of 11 β -HSD1 and increases GR in hippocampus and subsequently modulates blood glucose levels, and therefore it is potential property that ZGJTJY could be of benefit for the treatment of behavior and cognitive function of diabetes-related depression.

    Abstract: Diabetes-induced brain insulin resistance is associated with many mental diseases, including depression. Epidemiological evidences demonstrate the pathophysiologic link between stress, depression, and diabetes. This study was designed to determine whether chronic unpredictable mild stress- (CUMS-) induced changes in brain insulin resistance could contribute to deterioration in mood and cognitive functions in diabetic rats. Male SD rats were randomly assigned to three groups, including standard control group, the diabetes group, and the diabetes with CUMS group. After 7 weeks, emotional behaviors and memory performances as well as metabolic phenotypes were measured. In addition, we examined the changes in protein expression related to brain insulin signaling. Our results show that rats in diabetes with CUMS group displayed a decreased locomotor behavior in open-field test, an increased immobility time in forced swim test, and tail suspension test, and an impaired learning and memory in the Morris water maze when compared to animals in diabetes group. Further, diabetes with CUMS exhibited a significant decrease in phosphorylation of insulin receptor and an increase phosphorylation of IRS-1 in brain. These results suggest that the depression-like behaviors and cognitive function impairments in diabetic rats with CUMS were related to the changes of brain insulin signaling.

    Abstract: This study consisted of a single centre randomised controlled trial with two parallel arms: an acupuncture group ( n = 20 ) with 27 affected eyes and a sham group ( n = 20 ) with 23 affected eyes. Participants in the acupuncture group received acupuncture treatment once daily, three times weekly for four weeks. Participants assigned to the control group received sham acupuncture, the same protocol as that used for the acupuncture group but without insertion of needles into the skin. The primary outcome measure was the cervical range of motion (CROM) score. Secondary outcome measures were the palpebral fissure size, response rate, and adverse events. All 40 participants completed the study. In the comparison of acupuncture and sham acupuncture, a significant difference was observed between acupuncture and sham acupuncture in CROM score ( 21.37 ± 15.16 and 32.21 ± 19.54 , resp.) ( P 〈 0.05 ) and palpebral fissure size ( 7.19 ± 2.94 and 5.41 ± 2.45 , resp.) ( P 〈 0.05 ). Response rate was also significantly different in the acupuncture group ( P 〈 0.05 ). No adverse events were reported in both groups in this study. In summary, it was demonstrated that acupuncture had a feasibility positive effect on oculomotor paralysis.

    Abstract: Aims . Ischemic postconditioning (IPO) has a strong protective effect against intestinal ischemia-reperfusion (IIR) injury that is partly related to autophagy. However, the precise mechanisms involved are unknown. Methods . C57BL/6J mice were subjected to unilateral IIR with or without IPO. After 45 min ischemia and 120 min reperfusion, intestinal tissues and blood were collected for examination. HE staining and Chiu’s score were used to evaluate pathologic injury. We test markers of intestinal barrier function and oxidative stress. Finally, we used WB to detect the expression of key proteins of autophagy and the Akt/GSK-3 β /Nrf2 pathway. Results . IPO significantly attenuated IIR injury. Expression levels of LC3 II/I, Beclin-1, and p62 were altered during IIR, indicating that IPO enhanced autophagy. IPO also activated Akt, inhibited GSK-3 β , induced Nrf2 nuclear translocation, and upregulated HO-1 and NQO1 expression, thus providing protective effects against IIR injury by suppressing oxidative stress. Consistently, the beneficial effects of IPO were abolished by pretreatment with 3-methyladenine, SC66, and brusatol, potent inhibitors of autophagy, Akt, and Nrf2, respectively. Conclusion . Our study indicates that IPO can ameliorate IIR injury by evoking autophagy, activating Akt, inactivating GSK-3 β , and activating Nrf2. These findings may provide novel insights for the alleviation of IIR injury.

    Abstract: Due to its capability to reduce fuel consumption and increase energy efficiency, the combined cooling, heating, and power (CCHP) system has obtained great concern during the last decade. A large number of deterministic and stochastic optimization models were proposed for supporting the operation management of the CCHP system, but few studies noticed that users’ demands in the real world may be subjected to twofold randomness with incomplete or uncertain information. In this study, a birandom chance-constrained linear programming (BCCLP) model is developed for identifying optimal operation strategies under random uncertainties. Compared with traditional stochastic programming models, the BCCLP model made the improvement through describing the energy demands as the birandom variables firstly, instead of traditional random variables. This way effectively avoided potential imbalance between energy supply and demand caused by oversimplified expression of uncertain parameters. A gas-fired CCHP system of a hotel in Shanghai, China, was used as a study case for demonstration. A variety of operation strategies are obtained under specific constraints-satisfaction conditions. It is concluded that the BCCLP model was capable of generating the cost-effective operation strategies and evaluating the tradeoffs between system economy and reliability. The influence imposed by some critical parameters on the system performance was examined through the sensitivity analysis, which provided the important guidance to the design and operational management of other similar CCHP systems in the future.

    Abstract: This paper presents a novel quasi-zero-stiffness (QZS) isolator designed by combining a tension spring with a vertical linear spring. In order to improve the performance of low-frequency vibration isolation, geometric nonlinear damping is proposed and applied to a quasi-zero-stiffness (QZS) vibration isolator. Through the study of static characteristics first, the relationship between force displacement and stiffness displacement of the vibration isolation mechanism is established; it is concluded that the parameters of the mechanism have the characteristics of quasi-zero stiffness at the equilibrium position. The solutions of the QZS system are obtained based on the harmonic balance method (HBM). Then, the force transmissibility of the QZS vibration isolator is analyzed. And the results indicate that increasing the nonlinear damping can effectively suppress the transmissibility compared with the nonlinear damping system. Finally, this system is innovative for low-frequency vibration isolation of rehabilitation robots and other applications.

    Abstract: Background. Zuogui Jiangtang Jieyu decoction (ZJJ) is mainly used for the treatment of diabetes-related depression in current clinical applications and research. This study aims to investigate whether the brain IR/IRS-1 signaling pathway is involved in the therapeutic effect of ZJJ on depression-like behavior in diabetic rats. Methods. Sprague–Dawley rats were fed with high-fat diet and subjected to streptozotocin injection to establish the diabetes animal model. After treatment with different doses of ZJJ (20.530 g/kg or 10.265 g/kg) for 4 weeks, the blood glucose level and peripheral insulin resistance were measured. The forced-swimming test (FST) and Morris water maze test (MWMT) were applied for the mood and cognitive function assessment. Then, the Western blot method was used to analyze the protein levels of insulin receptor (IR), insulin receptor substrate-1 (IRS-1), phosphatidylonositol-3-kinase (PI3K), and protein kinase B (PKB, also as known as AKT) in the hippocampus of diabetic rats. Meanwhile, the immunofluorescence method was performed to analyze the above proteins’ expression in the neuron and astrocyte. At last, the levels of glycogen, lactate, and ATP were tested by the ELISA method. Additionally, the insulin-sensitive glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4) and the lactate transporter monocarboxylate transporter 4 (MCT4) were analyzed by the Western blot method. Results. ZJJ administration significantly decreased the level of blood glucose and improved the peripheral insulin resistance in diabetic rats. Besides, ZJJ attenuated the depression-like behavior and the cognitive dysfunction in rats with diabetes. Furthermore, we found the upregulation of protein expression of phospho-IR, phospho-IRS-1, phospho-PI3K, and phospho-AKT in the hippocampus of diabetic rats after being treated with ZJJ. Moreover, the above proteins are increased not only in the neuron but also in the astrocyte after ZJJ administration. In addition, ZJJ increased the content of ATP, glycogen, and lactate, as well as the expression of GLUT4 and MCT4 in the hippocampus of diabetic rats. Conclusions. These findings suggest that ZJJ improves the depression-like behavior of diabetic rats by activating the IR/IRS-1 signaling pathway in both hippocampal neuron and astrocyte. And the brain IR/IRS-1 signaling pathway plays an important role in astrocyte-neuron metabolic coupling, providing a potential mechanism by which the IR/IRS-1 signaling pathway may contribute to the treatment of ZJJ on diabetes-related depression.

    Abstract: In order to explore the construction performance of zeolite asphalt mixture, the microproperties of zeolite and the macroproperties of zeolite asphalt mixture were studied. The structure composition, surface properties, and pore characteristics of zeolite were analyzed by infrared spectroscopy and pressure pump method. The structure, composition, and thermal stability of zeolite were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry, the mechanism of moisture absorption and loss of water was explored, and the properties of moisture absorption and loss of water were studied. The effect of the type and amount of zeolite on the viscosity of asphalt was studied by the viscosity test. According to the mixing current and the compaction void ratio, the influence of zeolite on the construction performance of zeolite asphalt mixture was studied. The results show that zeolite contains special zeolite water and the pore content of zeolite is much higher than that of mineral powder. Zeolite loses water at 90°C∼120°C, which is the necessary condition for zeolite to be used in warm mix asphalt mixture. The water absorption and loss capacity of zeolite mainly depend on pore volume. The larger the pore volume is, the stronger the water holding capacity of zeolite is. Meanwhile, the water holding capacity and loss capacity of zeolite are related to pore size distribution. According to the viscosity temperature equation, the mixing and compaction temperature of the asphalt mixture are determined. The mixing and initial pressure temperature of the zeolite asphalt mixture are lower than those of the hot asphalt mixture. Based on the principle of mixing current equivalence, the mixing temperature of zeolite asphalt mixture can be reduced by 20°C compared with that of hot asphalt mixture. The better the water loss performance of zeolite is, the easier the mixture is to be compacted. For the base asphalt mixture, the compaction temperature of the mixture is 120–130°C, and, for the modified asphalt mixture, the compaction temperature is 130–140°C.
