Abstract: PURPOSE: to characterize fishermen's profile, participating in an educational program developed as part of the Prevention of Hearing Loss. METHOD: a cross-sectional study conducted with 52 fishing industry. We carried out educational activities on topics relevant to hearing, such as, operation and care. After the program, the participants answered a questionnaire on the concepts used in the lecture and the presented complaints, and then they passed through the audiometric exam. RESULTS: the age of the participants varied from 24 to 65 year old (average 42.8 year old). 61.53% of audiometry exams were altered and 96.8% of fishermen with hearing loss were more than 40 year old. Answering the questionnaire: 78.84% of the fishermen feel the noise of boats is very intense, 17.31% reported hearing difficulties; 30.77% with difficulty to understanding speech and 46.15% with tinnitus. 76.92% answered that along with hearing loss, tinnitus is one of the effects related to exposure to noise. All these findings indicate the need for individual and collective preventive intervention in this population. The rate of hearing loss is a number that draws attention; however, few have hearing difficulty. The performed educational program was the first step to awareness of these workers regarding prevention of the damage that exposure to noise may come to cause to health. CONCLUSIONS: there was significant dependence between the auditory and age of the fishermen, in other words, the occurrence of hearing loss is significantly greater from 40 year old. Thus, the fishermen who were more than 40 year old had 18.05 times more hearing loss than those who are less than 40 year old.

Abstract: PURPOSE: to identify the attitudes and the hearing habits of adolescents in relation with environmental noise and in leisure activities. METHODS: 125 teenagers of both genders (68% male and 30.4% female) were included in the study, with an average age of 16.7 years. The adolescents were invited to answer the Brazilian version of the Youth Attitude to Noise Scale (YANS) questionnaire in order to study their attitude towards noise, teenagers' habits and demographic data. Descriptive statistics was used to characterize demographic data and Fisher and Square Chi tests to analyze gender differences. RESULTS: to attitudes: 40.2% agree that noise and high sounds are natural aspects of our society, 32% are prepared to make the school atmosphere less noisy. 85.6% of the teens said that they do not worry before going to shows or even discos and that they had had precedent experiences of buzzing after resonant events, and 75.2% said they never use any hearing protective equipment. To habits: 46.4% of the sample said that they hear music daily using ear phones; 34.4% hear music with house sound equipment in high volumes. Significant results (p 〈 0.05%) between genders were found in sporting and nautical activities as well as in shooting practices and musical groups. CONCLUSIONS: the members of this study have positive attitudes towards noise and the most common habits were listening to music with headphones or stereo (home or car).

Abstract: ABSTRACT Purpose To analyze the possible differences among the hearing of farmers and their families when compared to the population not exposed to pesticides. Methods Cross-sectional study with 70 smallholder family farmers (research group), with the mean age of 39.7 years, of both sexes and a mean of 23.7 years of exposure to pesticides. We included a control group with 71 participants of both sexes with the mean age of 39.5 years, not exposed to either noise or chemical substances, to compare the results. In stage 1, both groups were submitted to conventional and high-frequency audiometry, and acoustic immittance. In stage 2, only people with normal hearing were submitted to the evoked otoacoustic emissions and suppression effect on transient otoacoustic emissions. Results Significant differences were observed between the groups in the conventional pure-tone and in the high-frequency audiometry, as well as in the acoustic reflex. The most affected frequencies in the conventional pure-tone audiometry ranged from 3 to 6 kHz and, in the high-frequency audiometry, from 9000 to 11200 Hz. As for the transient otoacoustic emissions, the worse suppression effect results were found in the research group. Conclusion There were differences among the hearing of family farmers and the control group. The conventional auditory thresholds are related to the group, age and sex. Farming is associated with impairments in the basal region of the cochlea, absence of acoustic reflex, reduced signal-to-noise ratio of the transient otoacoustic emissions, and dysfunction in the olivocochlear efferents of the auditory system.

Abstract: The increase in noise levels at hospitals could be attributed to many factors as incorporation of new technologies, concentration and flow of people and non-compliance of silence by the workers and patients. Noise provokes negatively impact the work process and people’s health. This study aimed a review the national literature on noise in hospital services in Brazil, by the analysis of the follow aspects: scientific research, measuring methods, noise levels in hospitals, and the findings and proposed strategies in studies. The noise level in Brazilian hospitals is above the recommended levels. There is an increasing knowledgement of this subject in Brazil. In order to expand this knowledge, intervention studies were recommended to eliminate the excessive noise into the hospitals. The noise control in hospitals should be considered as a priority to improve their surroundings.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To assess the hearing status and signs of significant auditory threshold shifts in meat-processing facility workers who are exposed to noise levels below nationally and internationally recommended exposure limits, and to compare these results with data from workers exposed to excessive noise levels. METHODS: Longitudinal audiometric data from 266 workers were evaluated, and only workers with a minimum of three audiometric test results and noise exposure records were selected for this study. The 63 assessments selected were classified according to subjects' noise exposure into three levels: 79 to 84.9 dB(A), 85 to 89.9 dB(A), and 90 to 98.9 dB(A). Occurrences of hearing loss and significant auditory threshold shifts were assessed, in each group. RESULTS: Differences in the mean thresholds were observed in all test frequencies among the different groups. A significant correlation was found between occurrence of noise-induced hearing loss and duration of noise exposure (in years) at the present industrial facility (R=0.373; p=0.079). Significant auditory threshold shifts were found in all three levels of noise exposure. CONCLUSION: The findings of the present study suggest the existence of an association between significant auditory threshold shifts in workers and the years of exposure to low risk noise levels.

Abstract: Purpose to carry out a characterize the hearing profile of workers from a hospital laundry. Method crosscut study, with 95 workers, males and females, age averaging 38.23, held at the laundry of a public hospital located in the city of Curitiba, Parana State/Brazil. Documental laundry analysis was carried out (Medical Control and Occupational Health Program and Environmental Risk Prevention Program), noise measurement, anamnesis-applied hearing evaluation, tonal threshold audiometry, acoustic immittance, and transient otoacoustic emission testing. Audiograms were analyzed through clinical and occupational criteria (Labor Ministry/ Regulatory Norm 7). Results noise levels found were 77.0 to 99.0 dB(A), 37.89% audiograms were altered, among them, 18.94% suggesting noise-induced hearing loss, mainly among the clothes folders. The test of otoacoustic emissions showed no transient responses in 13 subjects with no emissions in some ears. Conclusion the laundry is a hazardous place for hearing loss, thus preventive measures, such as Hearing Conservation Programs must be adopted.

Abstract: ABSTRACT Purpose To analyze the impact of exposure to music in the hearing process and quality of life in musicians of a symphony orchestra. Methods This is a descriptive, cross-cut, quantitative study on the aspects of hearing health in 30 musicians of the symphony orchestra of Paraná, ages between 33 and 54 years. The sound pressure levels that musicians are exposed to were measured during the orchestra rehearsal, and participants answered a questionnaire about the musical practice as well as the SF-36 questionnaire, which investigates the quality of life. Conventional audiometry and high-frequency audiometry were applied. Results During the orchestra rehearsal, hazardous sound pressure levels to musicians’ hearing health were observed. The commonest symptoms reported were tinnitus and intolerance to intense sounds. In the conventional audiometry test, more than half of the musicians featured sensorineural hearing loss, and the worst results were found in high frequencies. In the high -frequency audiometry test, higher auditory thresholds were also found in higher frequencies. As for quality of life, there was significant correlation for musicians with hearing loss in the domain “limitation due to emotional aspects”. Conclusion the sound pressure levels that musicians are exposed to are excessive and represent a risk to hearing health. Hearing loss and other auditory symptoms can interfere in their quality of life, once hearing is essential to this professional category.
