    Abstract: Ixeris dentata (ID) is an herbal medicine used in Asian countries to treat indigestion, pneumonia, hepatitis, contusions, and tumors; however, its effect on intestinal inflammation is unknown. Thus, we investigated the effect of ID in the dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) model of colitis in female BALB/c mice; animals were evaluated after seven days of DSS treatment. DSS-treated mice showed considerable clinical signs, including weight loss, reduced colon length, colonic epithelial injury, infiltration of inflammatory cells in the colon tissue, and upregulation of inflammatory mediators. However, administration of ID attenuated body weight loss, colon shortening, and the increase in disease activity index score. ID also significantly decreased the colonic mucosal injury and the number of infiltrating mast cells. Moreover, ID inhibited the expressions of cyclooxygenase-2 and hypoxia-inducible factor-1 α in colon tissue. Taken together, the results provide experimental evidence that ID might be a useful therapy for patients with ulcerative colitis.

    Abstract: This study investigated the expectorant effects of immature Asian pear extract (IAP; Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai) on subacute pulmonary injuries in Balb/c mice induced by particulate matter with a diameter of approximately 2.5 μm (PM2.5). IAP was administered at three doses, namely, 400, 200, and 100 mg/kg. The body weight and weight gain changes, lung weights, lung and body surface gross inspections, tracheal secretions, and substance P and ACh content in lung tissue homogenate were observed one day after the tenth IAP administration. The mRNA expression of the genes related to mucus production and lung histopathology was compared with that of the negative and positive controls. Favorable pulmonary protective effects on PM2.5-induced subacute pulmonary injuries, mucus overproduction, and respiratory acidosis were observed in groups treated with IAP at all three doses, possibly through potent anti-inflammatory and mucolytic expectorant activities mediated by the increase in the content of lung substances P and ACh and the downregulation of lung MUC5AC and MUC5B mRNA expression in a dose-dependent manner. The results of this study show that an appropriate oral administration of IAP has sufficient pulmonary protective effects and can be used as a candidate for the development of functional food ingredients.

    Abstract: Aims. The effects of platycodin D (PD) pretreatment were examined in reflux esophagitis (RE) induced rats. Methods. Sham, control, and omeprazole (OMP) group were pretreated with distilled water or OMP as a reference, respectively, and PD pretreated groups were given 3 different PD doses once a day for 7 days. One hour after last pretreatment, RE was induced by ligation of the forestomach and pylorus. At 8 h after operation, all animals were sacrificed. Results. PD showed significant dose-dependent reduction of gastric secretion, myeloperoxidase activity, and RE lesion areas of esophagus and stomach mucosa. There was a reduction of lipid peroxidation in 2 doses of PD groups and elevation of antioxidant enzyme activity in all PD groups. Gastric hexose and sialic acid were significantly increased in PD groups, while collagen was reduced. Plasma histamine levels were significantly reduced in all PD groups, but not in the OMP group. Total invasive lesion sizes of esophagus and gastric fundus were significantly decreased in all PD groups. Thicknesses in esophagus of all PD groups were significantly decreased and thicknesses of funds were significantly increased except lowest PD dose. Conclusions. Therapeutic effects of PD on the esophageal and gastric lesions were shown in RE induced rats dose-dependently. The PD pretreatment had significant antioxidant effects with regulation of histamine levels. This study provides useful information regarding the effectiveness of the drug for RE and further novel drug discovery using natural herbal products.
