Abstract: In this paper, a switching method is proposed for power device temperature-balancing in a phase-shift full-bridge (PSFB) converter. PSFB is commonly used for applications that require high efficiency, because a zero-voltage switching (ZVS) operation is possible on the primary-side. In PSFB, the circulation current complicates ZVS under a light-load condition, which generates heat. Meanwhile, the heat generated in PSFB creates a temperature deviation between the lagging leg and the leading leg, which shortens the lifetime of the power device, thereby reducing system reliability and efficiency. To solve this problem, previous studies applied a pulse-width modulation (PWM) switching method for light and medium loads, and a phase-shift switching method for the region where ZVS is possible. Although this method has the advantage of easy control, the maximum temperature of the legs of the PSFB increases with medium loads. In this paper, a temperature-balancing algorithm—a temperature-balance control—is proposed to decrease the leg temperature using switching based on position exchanges of the leading leg and lagging leg along with PWM switching. Temperature-balance control minimizes leg temperature deviation under light load conditions. The proposed control method provides a minimum temperature difference between the two legs and high efficiency.

Abstract: A strategy to operate a power conversion system (PCS) to minimize the electricity rate of an energy storage system (ESS) is formulated. The ESS operation method is determined considering the power management system (PMS). The primary functions include peak-cut, peak-shifting, and frequency regulation typically related to electricity rates. Thus, the battery is charged and discharged when the price is low and high, respectively, thereby monetizing the battery. However, the ESS incurs a high cost for the batteries and PCS. Therefore, ESSs that reuse electric vehicle (EV) batteries are being actively developed. Many researchers have attempted to maximize the profit of ESSs by developing algorithms to calculate the optimal ESS capacity by performing a power load analysis of electricity consumers. An ESS selected based on this calculation can be operated through the PMS. This ESS can use the battery state of charge (SoC), ranging from 10–90%, to conduct a feasibility analysis using the net present value, which reflects the current electricity rate. This feasibility analysis is performed considering the difference between the initial investment cost of the ESS and the profit obtained from the power generation of the ESS. In South Korea, many policies have been implemented to encourage the installation of ESSs. The ESS promotion policy was implemented until 2020 to reduce the electricity rate, including the contracted capacity of batteries. However, since 2021, this policy has been transformed to reduce the electricity rate based on the daily maximum power generation. Thus, the conventional method of increasing the battery capacity is not suitable, and the profitability should be increased using limited batteries. For ESSs, PCSs composed of single and parallel structures can be used. When installing a large capacity ESS, a PCS using silicon (Si) is adopted to reduce the unit cost of the PCS. The unit price of a silicon carbide (SiC) device has recently decreased significantly. Thus, in this study, a PCS using this SiC device was developed. Moreover, an algorithm was formulated to minimize the electricity rate of the ESS, and the operation of a modular type PCS based on this algorithm was demonstrated.

Abstract: Estimating meat quality prior to slaughter will be beneficial for the rapid identification of specific traits or poor quality pork compared to a conventional assessment at postmortem. In this study, we identified and quantified myosin heavy chain (MHC) isoforms from a biopsied longissimus thoracis muscle of pigs, and determined their correlation with postmortem muscle fiber characteristics and meat quality. MHC slow and fast isoforms proportions from biopsied samples correlated with postmortem percentage of type I and type IIB muscle fibers, respectively (p 〈 0.05). The percentage of the biopsied MHC slow isoform showed a positive correlation with pH at 45 min postmortem, and negative correlations with filter-paper fluid uptake and drip loss in pork (p 〈 0.05). Furthermore, clustering the pigs into three groups based on the biopsied MHC isoform proportions was not only significantly associated with muscle fiber number and proportions of muscle fiber area, but also correlated with pH at 45 min postmortem and the National Pork Producers Council color score (p 〈 0.05). Collectively, our findings indicate that the biopsied MHC isoforms serve as parameter for estimating meat quality, with the association between the higher proportion of MHC slow isoforms and pH at 45 min postmortem in particular being indicative of better pork quality.

Abstract: This paper investigates the operation of each power conversion system (PCS) for efficient energy management systems (EMSs) of microgrids (MGs). When MGs are linked to renewable energy sources (RESs), the reduction in power conversion efficiency can be minimized. Furthermore, energy storage systems (ESSs) are utilized to manage the surplus power of RESs. Thus, the present work presents a method to minimize the use of the existing power grid and increase the utilization rate of energy generated through RESs. To minimize the use of the existing power grid, a PCS operation method for photovoltaics (PV) and ESS used in MGs is proposed. PV, when it is directly connected as an intermittent energy source, induces voltage fluctuations in the distribution network. Thus, to overcome this shortcoming, this paper utilizes a system that connects PV and a distributed energy storage system (DESS). A PV-DESS integrated module is designed and controlled for tracking constant power. In addition, the DESS serves to compensate for the insufficient power generation of PV. The main energy storage systems (MESSs) used in MGs affect all aspects of the power management in the system. Because MGs perform their operations based on the capacity of the MESS, a PCS designed with a large capacity is utilized to stably operate the system. Because the MESS performs energy management through operations under various load conditions, it must have constant efficiency under all load conditions. Therefore, this paper proposes a PCS operation algorithm with constant efficiency for the MESS. Utilizing the operation algorithm of each PCS, this paper describes the efficient energy management of the MG and further proposes an algorithm for operating the existing power grid at the minimum level.

Abstract: Recent developments in high-density lithium-ion battery technologies have greatly expanded the electric vehicle (EV) market. Due to the fact that the rapid charging of an EV battery pack while maintaining a suitable cell cycle life is necessary for further growth of the EV market, we herein propose an innovative adaptive rapid charging pattern that minimizes cell degradation and reflects the degradation characteristics. This technology is advantageous in that cells can be developed by analyzing the charging characteristics in the latter stages of cell development of the rapid charging pattern, while also considering the complexity and heterogeneity of the manufacturing process. Furthermore, the battery charging pattern is optimized and controlled in real-time by reflecting the characteristics of the battery module and pack degradation as the cycle number is increased. More specifically, we present a preliminary study that simplifies the implementation of the new optimization pattern to improve the cell cycle life by over 45% in comparison to conventional fast charging patterns, and to address the drop in capacity in the latter half of cell life during rapid charging.

Abstract: Aging increases the internal resistance of a battery and reduces its capacity; therefore, energy storage systems (ESSs) require a battery management system (BMS) algorithm that can manage the state of the battery. This paper proposes a battery efficiency calculation formula to manage the battery state. The proposed battery efficiency calculation formula uses the charging time, charging current, and battery capacity. An algorithm that can accurately determine the battery state is proposed by applying the proposed state of charge (SoC) and state of health (SoH) calculations. To reduce the initial error of the Coulomb counting method (CCM), the SoC can be calculated accurately by applying the battery efficiency to the open circuit voltage (OCV). During the charging and discharging process, the internal resistance of a battery increase and the constant current (CC) charging time decrease. The SoH can be predicted from the CC charging time of the battery and the battery efficiency, as proposed in this paper. Furthermore, a safe system is implemented during charging and discharging by applying a fault diagnosis algorithm to reduce the battery efficiency. The validity of the proposed BMS algorithm is demonstrated by applying it in a 3-kW ESS.
