Abstract: An image reconstruction algorithm based on disturbed synthetic aperture sonar data is presented. First, the data are divided on the basis of aperture and the images are then reconstructed from the divided data. For a smoothly varying phase disturbance these images are shifted in the azimuth direction corresponding to the local tilts of the disturbance, so that detection of these shifts enables the disturbance to be estimated and thus compensation can be made for the disturbed data. A reflector is placed in or around the object to be observed in order for the algorithm to apply to a general class of objects. The optimum size of the subapertures can be determined from the same data. The principle of the method and some typical numerical examples are given.
