    Abstract: To identify optimal machine-learning methods for the radiomics-based differentiation of gliosarcoma (GSM) from glioblastoma (GBM). Materials and Methods This retrospective study analyzed cerebral magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data of 83 patients with pathologically diagnosed GSM (58 men, 25 women; mean age, 50.5 ± 12.9 years; range, 16-77 years) and 100 patients with GBM (58 men, 42 women; mean age, 53.4 ± 14.1 years; range, 12-77 years) and divided them into a training and validation set randomly. Radiomics features were extracted from the tumor mass and peritumoral edema. Three feature selection and classification methods were evaluated in terms of their performance in distinguishing GSM and GBM: the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO), Relief, and Random Forest (RF); and adaboost classifier (Ada), support vector machine (SVM), and RF; respectively. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) and accuracy (ACC) of each method were analyzed. Results Based on tumor mass features, the selection method LASSO + classifier SVM was found to feature the highest AUC (0.85) and ACC (0.77) in the validation set, followed by Relief + RF (AUC = 0.84, ACC = 0.72) and LASSO + RF (AUC = 0.82, ACC = 0.75). Based on peritumoral edema features, Relief + SVM was found to have the highest AUC (0.78) and ACC (0.73) in the validation set. Regardless of the method, tumor mass features significantly outperformed peritumoral edema features in the differentiation of GSM from GBM ( P & lt; 0.05). Furthermore, the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of the best radiomics model were superior to those obtained by the neuroradiologists. Conclusion Our radiomics study identified the selection method LASSO combined with the classifier SVM as the optimal method for differentiating GSM from GBM based on tumor mass features.

    Abstract: The signals from electromyography (EMG) have been used for volitional control of robotic assistive devices with the challenges of performance improvement. Currently, the most common method of EMG signal processing for robot control is RMS (root mean square)-based algorithm, but system performance accuracy can be affected by noise or artifacts. This study hypothesized that the frequency bandwidths of noise and artifacts are beyond the main EMG signal frequency bandwidth, hence the fixed-bandwidth frequency-domain signal processing methods can filter off the noise and artifacts only by processing the main frequency bandwidth of EMG signals for robot control. The purpose of this study was to develop a cost-effective embedded system and short-time Fourier transform (STFT) method for an EMG-controlled robotic hand. Healthy volunteers were recruited in this study to identify the optimal myoelectric signal frequency bandwidth of muscle contractions. The STFT embedded system was developed using the STM32 microcontroller unit (MCU). The performance of the STFT embedded system was compared with RMS embedded system. The results showed that the optimal myoelectric signal frequency band responding to muscle contractions was between 60 and 80 Hz. The STFT embedded system was more stable than the RMS embedded system in detecting muscle contraction. Onsite calibration was required for RMS embedded system. The average accuracy of the STFT embedded system is 91.55%. This study presents a novel approach for developing a cost-effective and less complex embedded myoelectric signal processing system for robot control.

    Abstract: The use of surgery is controversial in patients with stage T3 or T4 triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). We aimed to explore the effect of surgical treatment on overall survival (OS) of these patients. Methods A total of 2,041 patients were selected and divided into the surgical and non-surgical groups based on the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database from 2010 to 2018. Propensity score matching (PSM) and inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) were applied to balance covariates between different groups. The OS of the two groups were assessed by Kaplan–Meier survival curves and Cox proportional hazards regression models. Results A total of 2,041 patients were included in the study. After PSM and IPTW, baseline characteristics of the matched variables were fully balanced. Kaplan–Meier survival curves showed that the median survival time and OS of TNBC patients with stage T3 or T4 in the surgical group were significantly improved compared with those in the non-surgical group. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression analysis showed that surgery was a protective factor for prognosis. Conclusion Our study found that surgery prolonged the median survival and improved OS compared with the non-surgical group of TNBC patients with stage T3 or T4.

    Abstract: The dynamics of a robot may vary during operation due to both internal and external factors, such as non-ideal motor characteristics and unmodeled loads, which would lead to control performance deterioration and even instability. In this paper, the adaptive optimal output regulation (AOOR)-based controller is designed for the wheel-legged robot Ollie to deal with the possible model uncertainties and disturbances in a data-driven approach. We test the AOOR-based controller by forcing the robot to stand still, which is a conventional index to judge the balance controller for two-wheel robots. By online training with small data, the resultant AOOR achieves the optimality of the control performance and stabilizes the robot within a small displacement in rich experiments with different working conditions. Finally, the robot further balances a rolling cylindrical bottle on its top with the balance control using the AOOR, but it fails with the initial controller. Experimental results demonstrate that the AOOR-based controller shows the effectiveness and high robustness with model uncertainties and external disturbances.

    Abstract: Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication after cardiac surgery and the prognosis of AKI worsens with the increase in AKI severity. Syndecan-1(SDC-1) is a biomarker of endothelial glycocalyx degradation. Fluid overload (FO) is associated with poor outcomes in AKI patients and may be related to the damage of endothelial function. This study aimed at demonstrating the association between elevated SDC-1, FO, and AKI progression. Methods: In this prospective study, we screened patients who underwent cardiac surgery and enrolled patients who experienced an AKI within 48 h after surgery from December 1, 2018 to January 31, 2019. Blood and urine samples were collected at the time of AKI diagnosis for plasma SDC-1 (pSDC-1) and urine SDC-1 (uSDC-1) measurements. Fluid balance (FB) = accumulated [fluid intake (L) - fluid output (L)] /body weight (kg) × 100%. FO was defined as FB & gt; 5%. The primary endpoint was progressive AKI, defined as AKI progression from a lower to a higher stage. The patients were divided into progressive AKI group vs. non-progressive AKI group. Results: The quartiles of pSDC-1 concentration (117.3 [67.4, 242.3] ng/mL) showed a graded association with the incidence of progressive AKI, ranging from 5.0, 11.9, 32.6 to 52.4% ( p for trend & lt; 0.001). Multivariate logistic regression showed that increased pSDC-1 was an independent risk factor for progressive AKI. The AUC-ROC area of pSDC-1 concentration in predicting AKI progression was 0.847. Linear regression showed a positive correlation between FB and pSDC-1 concentration ( R 2 = 0.384, p & lt; 0.001). In patients with FO, the progressive AKI incidence was significantly higher in the high pSDC-1 (≥117.3 ng/mL) subgroup than in the low pSDC-1 subgroup (58.3 vs. 17.6%, OR = 9.167, P = 0.005). In patients without FO, the progressive AKI incidence was also significantly higher in the high pSDC-1 subgroup with a lower odds ratio (30.4 vs. 7.4%, OR = 6.714, P = 0.002). Conclusion: Elevated pSDC-1 concentration was associated with progressive AKI after cardiac surgery and showed good predictive ability for progressive AKI. FB was related to the increase of pSDC-1. The interaction between pSDC-1 and FB may further aggravate the progression of AKI.

    Abstract: Lymph node metastasis (LNM) has a significant impact on the prognosis of patients with early gastric cancer (EGC). Our aim was to identify the independent risk factors for LNM and construct nomograms for male and female EGC patients, respectively. Methods Clinicopathological data of 1,742 EGC patients who underwent radical gastrectomy and lymphadenectomy in the First Affiliated Hospital, Second Affiliated Hospital, and Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University between November 2011 and April 2021 were collected and analyzed retrospectively. Male and female patients from the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University were assigned to training sets and then from the Second and Fourth Affiliated Hospitals of Anhui Medical University were enrolled in validation sets. Based on independent risk factors for LNM in male and female EGC patients from the training sets, the nomograms were established respectively, which was also verified by internal validation from the training sets and external validation from the validation sets. Results Tumor size (odd ratio (OR): 1.386, p = 0.030), depth of invasion (OR: 0.306, p = 0.001), Lauren type (OR: 2.816, p = 0.000), lymphovascular invasion (LVI) (OR: 0.160, p = 0.000), and menopause (OR: 0.296, p = 0.009) were independent risk factors for female EGC patients. For male EGC patients, tumor size (OR: 1.298, p = 0.007), depth of invasion (OR: 0.257, p = 0.000), tumor location (OR: 0.659, p = 0.002), WHO type (OR: 1.419, p = 0.001), Lauren type (OR: 3.099, p = 0.000), and LVI (OR: 0.131, p = 0.000) were independent risk factors. Moreover, nomograms were established to predict the risk of LNM for female and male EGC patients, respectively. The area under the ROC curve of nomograms for female and male training sets were 87.7% (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.8397–0.914) and 94.8% (95% CI: 0.9273–0.9695), respectively. For the validation set, they were 92.4% (95% CI: 0.7979–1) and 93.4% (95% CI: 0.8928–0.9755), respectively. Additionally, the calibration curves showed good agreements between the bias-corrected prediction and the ideal reference line for both training sets and validation sets in female and male EGC patients. Conclusions Nomograms based on risk factors for LNM in male and female EGC patients may provide new insights into the selection of appropriate treatment methods.

    Abstract: Objective: To evaluate the associations between single-child status and metabolic syndrome (MS) and to identify the highest risk group of MS among single children. Methods: Differences in participants' characteristics by sex were examined by Student's t -test for continuous variables and Pearson's chi-squared test for categorical variables. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to estimate the odds ratios ( OR ) and 95% confidence intervals ( CI ) for MS and its components according to the single-child status. Radar maps were used to compare the composition of different components in MS. Results: In total, 11,784 (5,880 boys) children and adolescents were included in this study, with a mean age of (11.3 ± 3.1) years. MS was observed in 7.1% of participants, with a higher prevalence in boys (8.2%) than girls (5.9%) ( P & lt; 0.05). The prevalence of MS, elevated blood pressure and abdominal obesity in single children were higher than that in children with siblings, particularly in boys ( P & lt; 0.001). Elevated risk of abdominal obesity was observed in single children [boys (1.56, 95% CI: 1.31, 1.85), girls (1.40, 95% CI: 1.19, 1.63)], however, increased ORs of elevated blood pressure and metabolic syndrome were observed in single-child boys only (1.19, 95% CI: 1.01, 1.40 and 1.76, 95% CI: 1.34, 2.31, respectively). Results showed that a statistically significant association between single child status and MS was mainly observed in urban boys (2.04, 95% CI: 1.33, 3.12) and rural boys (1.50, 95% CI: 1.05, 2.15), but not in girls. Among all the combinations of MS, two combinations were significantly associated with the single-child status, including the combination of elevated blood pressure, abdominal and low HDL-C (1.45, 1.04, 2.04) and the combination of elevated blood pressure, abdominal obesity, low HDL-C and hypertriglyceridemia (2.04, 1.40, 3.06) ( P & lt; 0.05). Conclusions: The present study found that single children and adolescents had a higher risk of MS, elevated blood pressure and abdominal obesity. The associations were stronger in urban boys. Further attention should be directed to the prevention and control strategies targeting the high-risk population of MS.

    Abstract: The high temperature forecast of the sub-season is a severe challenge. Currently, the residual structure has achieved good results in the field of computer vision attributed to the excellent feature extraction ability. However, it has not been introduced in the domain of sub-seasonal forecasting. Here, we develop multi-module daily deterministic and probabilistic forecast models by the residual structure and finally establish a complete set of sub-seasonal high temperature forecasting system in the eastern part of China. The experimental results indicate that our method is effective and outperforms the European hindcast results in all aspects: absolute error, anomaly correlation coefficient, and other indicators are optimized by 8–50%, and the equitable threat score is improved by up to 400%. We conclude that the residual network has a sharper insight into the high temperature in sub-seasonal high temperature forecasting compared to traditional methods and convolutional networks, thus enabling more effective early warnings of extreme high temperature weather.

    Abstract: The incidence of tissue and organ damage caused by various diseases is increasing worldwide. Tissue engineering is a promising strategy of tackling this problem because of its potential to regenerate or replace damaged tissues and organs. The biochemical and biophysical cues of biomaterials can stimulate and induce biological activities such as cell adhesion, proliferation and differentiation, and ultimately achieve tissue repair and regeneration. Micro/nano materials are a special type of biomaterial that can mimic the microstructure of tissues on a microscopic scale due to its precise construction, further providing scaffolds with specific three-dimensional structures to guide the activities of cells. The study and application of biomimetic micro/nano-materials have greatly promoted the development of tissue engineering. This review aims to provide an overview of the different types of micro/nanomaterials, their preparation methods and their application in tissue regeneration.
