Abstract: Spontaneous ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (sOHSS) usually occurs in patients with a spontaneous ovulation cycle, especially in those with multiple pregnancies combined with hypothyroidism and polycystic ovary syndrome. sOHSS rarely occurs in women who are not pregnant. A 23-year-old woman with obvious abdominal distension visited our hospital. The patient was not pregnant and had not undergone controlled superovulation. Apart from abdominal distension, the patient denied any symptom of obvious incentives, abdominal pain, abnormal vaginal bleeding, or drainage. Biochemical analysis showed a high carbohydrate antigen-125 level and low total protein and albumin levels. Abdominal ultrasound and computed tomography showed a large amount of ascites and cystic uneven masses with an irregular shape in the area of the ovaries and fallopian tubes. Post-surgical histopathology indicated the diagnosis of sOHSS. Wedge resection of both ovaries was performed. Symptomatic treatment was further performed and the patient recovered well. Our findings indicate that sOHSS can occur in women who are not pregnant. Additionally, besides the follicle-stimulating hormone receptor gene mutation hypothesis, the pathogenesis of sOHSS should be further studied.

Abstract: It is of vital importance to identify the pleural line when performing lung ultrasound, as the pleural line not only indicates the interface between the chest wall and lung, but offers additional diagnostic information. In the current clinical practice, the pleural line is visually detected and evaluated by clinicians, which requires experiences and skills with challenges for the novice. In this study, we developed a computer-aided technique for automated pleural line detection using ultrasound. The method first utilized the Radon transform to detect line objects in the ultrasound images. The relation of the body mass index and chest wall thickness was then applied to estimate the range of the pleural thickness, based on which the pleural line was detected together with the consideration of the ultrasonic properties of the pleural line. The proposed method was validated by testing 83 ultrasound data sets collected from 21 pneumothorax patients. The pleural lines were successfully identified in 76 data sets by the automated method (successful detection rate 91.6%). In those successful cases, the depths of the pleural lines measured by the automated method agreed with those manually measured as confirmed with the Bland-Altman test. The measurement errors were below 5% in terms of the pleural line depth. As a conclusion, the proposed method could detect the pleural line in an automated manner in the defined data set. In addition, the method may potentially act as an alternative to visual inspection after further tests on more diverse data sets are performed in future studies.

Abstract: Much heat is released in aerobic landfills, which leads to temperature change. Quantitative prediction of temperature change with time and space is essential for the safe aerobic operation of landfill. In this article, based on the theory of porous media seepage mechanics and heat transfer, a seepage–temperature coupling model considering aeration, recirculation and degradation was established, which included internal energy change, heat conduction, convection and heat transfer. Moreover, combined with the long-time on-site monitoring temperature data from Wuhan Jinkou Landfill, the model’s reliability was preliminarily verified. Sensitivity analysis was carried out for aeration intensity, aeration temperature, recirculation intensity and recirculation temperature. Among the four factors, recirculation intensity influences the peak temperature most with a decrease of 20.11%. Compared with Borglin’s and Hao’s models, it is found that waste should not be assumed as a cell for temperature prediction. By comparing the results of Non-linear Ascent Stage model, Linear Ascent Stage model and Absent Ascent Stage model, it showed that the temperature difference of the three models decreases with the increase of operation time. In addition, the time point of peak temperature, t 0 , affects the temperature distribution. The above results provide a reference for predicting the spatial and temporal distribution of temperature and regulations for long-term aerobic landfill operations.

Abstract: The previous research on the pump valve is mostly focused on theory and simulation, but how much precision of these results can be obtained is rarely of concern. A new experimental approach for accurately measuring the reciprocating pump valve motion parameters has been presented. An FEA model to describe the pump valve's collision contact statealso been established. Combining the measured valve's velocity and displacement data, the collision contact characteristics in valve assembly during pump operation have been systematically analyzed by ANSYS/LS-DYNA. The von Mises stress in valve disc and its seat changed by the variables such as valve closing speed, mass, diameter, and taper angle in the collision contact process are quantitatively determined, as well as the relationship between valve's collision contact condition and pump service life. Results show that the experiment and simulation approach can truly and accurately reflect the pump valve's collision process, which provides a scientific basis for the further analysis of pump valve movement and damage mechanism and then improves the reciprocating pump design.

Abstract: Large onboard antennas with multi-beams are used almost in all the Geostationary Earth Orbit satellite communications systems, which are always disturbed by jams and inferences. However, there are lots of factors restricting interference localization in satellite communications system because the system is not designed for location-oriented. This article makes use of the characteristic that each spot beam of multi-beams antenna has different gain at the position of interference, establishes the localization equations set by using the ground projection model of multi-beams antenna pattern, and gives two methods of solving equations. Thus, it proposes interference localization algorithm using single satellite, based on antenna gain and the distribution of signal strength in multi-beam space. Because of not depending on extra onboard equipments and other facilities, it has no effect on the construction and operation of satellite communications system. From the results of analyses and simulations, the localization precision can satisfy the general practical requirement. The algorithm could be used in checking the interference of the system, decision supporting of anti-jamming, and improving operation and management of the system.

Abstract: Drainage tubes (e.g., intracranial, abdominal cavity and thoracic) are commonly used to drain blood and fluid collections after surgery. It usually fails due to the lack of fixation perpendicular to the skin and the variety of tube materials. The objective of the article is to describe a new drainage tube device. Methods This new device consists of a drainage tube fixator and diverter with a rotating handle. The fixator and diverter are fixed to the skin with a pair of wings, and the base comprises acircular arc with chamfering of the edge. The removable stopper and plastic diverter have a memory function. There are 2 holes on either side of the wings, by which they can be sewn to the skin or stapled for strength and stability. Results The removable limiting stopper and plastic diverter with memory function work together to ensure that the drainage tube is firmly fixed. Therefore, the tube will not move either vertically or horizontally on the skin. Moreover, the device is fit for drainage tubes with different specifications and materials. Conclusions The limiting stopper can be moved easily, which is conducive to local skin disinfection around the drainage tube. The device deserves clinical promotion.

Abstract: A novel compact manual instrument for laparoscopic surgery, Easy Grasp, is proposed and the prototype is developed. It is a hybridization of cable and link drives. The instrument conforms to the ergonomic engineering and it can realize roll, pitch, and yaw motions. Owing to the parallelograms and universal joints, the motions outside the abdomen can be mapped to the end-effector motions inside the abdomen exactly. The workspace of the wrist-like joint is a submanifold of special orthogonal group and is evaluated by the matrix exponential parameterization. The structure of the instrument is designed optimally on the basis of the kinematic analysis together with the global condition index. The instrument can not only satisfy the needs of basic tasks, but also be used to accomplish difficult tasks such as suturing and knot-tying. Experimental results show that the instrument works as well as commercial products. The ease of use will make the instrument effective in laparoscopic surgery. The structure of the instrument is a prototype for other manual instruments and provides a framework for instrument design.

Abstract: Particle localization is commonly encountered in many areas of numerical computations. A method of tracing particles in irregular unstructured grid system is presented. The method introduced an additional set of indexical grid system to overlap the original irregular unstructured computational grid system. The particle tracing was first conducted in the indexical grid system to obtain which indexical grid cell the particle lies in, and then was carried out among the original irregular computation grid cells which were included in this localized indexical grid cell. The new method is easy to realize in numerical calculations and can apparently improve the efficiency of particle localization.

Abstract: For gear pairs with centre-distance separability, transmission ratios are not affected by centre distance error. Based on space curve meshing theory, the centre distance separability of a line gear pair was studied. A novel line gear pair called the separable and pure rolling parallel shaft line gear pair (SPRPSLG) was proposed, which has centre-distance separability characteristics and pure rolling transmission. The basic design theory of the SPRPSLG pair was established. A design method of the SPRPSLG pair with an eccentric arc tooth profile was given. An SPRPSLG pair example was designed and manufactured using the form milling method. Kinematic experiments and meshing efficiency experiments were conducted. Gear contact spot testing and gear contact simulation analysis were carried out. The SPRPSLG pair was shown to have centre distance separability, which provides a further theoretical basis for the popularization and application of line gears.
