    Abstract: The temporal and spatial variation characteristics of soil moisture in typical slope and gully of Jiulongquangou small watershed were studied in the hilly and gully region of the Loess Plateau of China. The variation of soil moisture in the 0-30 cm layer on the surface of the hilly and gully region of the Loess Plateau is greater than the variation of soil moisture in each layer between 40 and 100 cm. In the study area, the model parameters such as coefficient of variation (Cv), nugget (C0), sill (C0+C), spatial degrees of freedom(C0/(C+C0)) and variable change can be used to quantitative analysis the spatial varying law. On the slope surface, the average soil water content and the coefficient of variation are negatively correlated, and can be approximated by an exponential function, while the two are positively correlated in the gully.

    Abstract: Respiration and hydrothermal characteristics of four reconstructed soils in barren gravel land at a site in Shaanxi Province were monitored before, during, and after two precipitation events. Both precipitation events significantly reduced soil temperature but there were great fluctuations in temperature after the second precipitation event. Moreover, precipitation increased the moisture content of the reconstructed soils. Before the first precipitation event, the soil volumetric water content was relatively stable, while it gradually decreased before the second precipitation event. The first precipitation event significantly stimulated the respiration rate for all reconstructed soils, while the second precipitation event generally inhibited it, especially during the precipitation event. The key factors influencing respiration for different reconstructed soils were different between the precipitation events. When soil volumetric water content showed persistent variation before precipitation, soil moisture was the most influential factor. In contrast, if water content was stable, soil temperature was more influential. Soil moisture and temperature jointly influenced soil respiration before, during, and after the precipitation event, while soil moisture was always the most influential factor after precipitation.

    Abstract: The temporal dynamics and spatial distribution characteristics of soil moisture in typical slope and gully of Jiulongquangou small watershed were studied in the hilly and gully region of the Loess Plateau of China. The average soil water content of each slope position showed a wave shape with time, and the change trend was: decreasing, increasing, decreasing and increasing. Due to the catchment in the gully, the average soil water content is the largest in the gully, and it changes more with the seasons. The profile soil moisture content characteristics at various slope positions are increased with the soil depth increasing, and the spatial variability of average soil water content in each layer depth is slightly reduced. The spatial variability of soils in different layers under different slopes is slightly fluctuating. However, due to the recharge of interflow and the consumption of roots, there is a large variability in the middle level of the gully and foot of slope, indicating that the interflow in the study area is a factor that must be considered. On the whole, in the small watershed of the gully region of the Loess Plateau, the topographic conditions affect the distribution characteristics of soil moisture, and the gully has obvious water collecting effect.

    Abstract: Soil structure represents a basis for soil water retention and fertiliser availability. Here, we performed a micromorphological analysis of thin soil sections to evaluate the effects of 10 years of organic planting (OPP), pollution-free planting (PFP), and conventional planting (CPP) on greenhouse soil structure in the North China Plain. We also analysed soil bulk density, soil organic matter (SOM), and wet aggregate stability. The CPP soil microstructure included weakly separated angular block or plate forms and weak development of soil pores (fissured or simply accumulated pores) with the highest bulk density (1.33 g cm −3 ) and lowest SOM (26.76 g kg −1 ). Unlike CPP, the OPP soil microstructure was characterised by highly separated granular and aggregated structures and an abundance of plant and animal remains. OPP was associated with the highest total porosity (55.4%), lowest bulk density (1.17 g cm −3 ), and highest SOM (54.81 g kg −1 ) in the soil surface layer. OPP also improved the ventilation pore content (proportion of pores 〉 0.1 mm, 44.09%). OPP aggregates showed different hierarchies of crumb microstructure and higher mean weight diameter and geometric mean diameter values than did CPP. These results confirm the benefits of long-term OPP for soil structure and quality in the greenhouse.
