Abstract: The sequential extraction method of Tessier et al. was applied to identify the phase associations of As and Pb in the surface sediment of Thuy Trieu lagoon. The results showed that these two metals were mainly found in the residual fractions. Meanwhile, the carbonate fractions stayed at the lowest portions. Levels of arsenic and lead as Fe-Mn oxide fractions were higher than those as organic fractions and exchangeable fractions. Exchangeable fractions and carbonate fractions of two elements seemed to increase in rainy season. Generally, the mobility of Pb was higher than that of As. In the sediments of Thuy Trieu lagoon, Pb levels cannot currently cause adverse effects on the ecosystems. On the contrary, the risk of As was assessed as moderate level.

Abstract: The paper presents the contents of metals and organic in the surface sediments (5–10 cm) at the submerged clam culture areas in Ben Tre province. The metal samples were digested by nitric acid 10% and analyzed by ICP-MS method, total organic matters (HC) were determined by the burning method at 500oC. The results showed that the content of Zn ranged from 22.4 to 48.1 µg/g, Cu: 3.3–25.1 µg/g, Pb: 7.3–27.8 µg/g, As: 1.1–4.7 µg/g, Cd: 0.1–0.4 µg/g, Ni: 8.3–4.5 µg/g, Co: 7.3–11.9 µg/g, Cr: 5.8–15.3 µg/g, Fe: 0.8–1.74 µg/g and organic: 1.2–8.4%. The contents of all elements in the sediment in the canals were much higher than in the clam culture areas at the river mouths. The concentrations of metals in clam culture areas were lower than threshold effect levels (TEL) according to Canadian standards.

Abstract: Recent studies have shown that the seawater, sediment and commercial bivalve molluscs in the studied area have been contaminated by some heavy metals Zn, Cu, Pb and Cr. Highly toxic heavy metals like As, Cd, Pb, Hg have tended to accumulate in the tissue of clams. This paper presents the levels of some heavy metals in the seawater, sediment and soft part of oyster (Crassostrea belcheri) samples collected from the western estuaries of Ganh Rai bay in 2015 and 2017. The results also showed that Ha Thanh and Rach Lo sites recorded the highest contents of most studied metals in oyster samples. Levels of metals in oyster were in the order of Zn 〉 Cu 〉 As 〉 Pb 〉 Cr 〉 Cd 〉 Hg and the contents of metals in oyster did not reflect a correlation with those in surrounding environment. Concerning food safety criteria, Pb, Cd and Hg contents were lower than acceptable limit given by the compilation of FAO (1983), whereas As, Cu and Zn contents exceeded the legal limit, especially Zn contents. Cu and Cr contents in sediment samples of Nga Bay and Dong Hoa estuaries were between LEL-SEL values (≥ LEL and 〈 SEL), which may cause biological impacts at moderate level.
