Abstract: INTRODUCTION: Social interaction and access to education and health depend on intersubjective processes that become effective through different language modalities. We consider that individuals' reading and writing conditions have an important role in their ageing process. OBJECTIVE: This paper aims to analyze literacy conditions of a group composed by individuals with at least 60 years old that attend a Health Unit in Praça Ouvidor Pardinho, located in Curitiba, Brazil. For that we applied a questionnaire and a reading test that hold different genres with 22 individuals. The questionnaire includes: age, school level, profession and reading and writing conditions. In the reading test, the individuals had to locate written information and realize inference. RESULTS: The results show that these ageing population had a restrict access to written language. CONCLUSIONS: It is important to note that the fulfilment of the Brazilian Elderly Statute depends on public policies that guarantee the literacy promotion to this group of people. Without the developing of these practices, it is impossible to consider an egalitarian society that allows elderly people to be effective citizens.

Abstract: Since this study aims to discuss the placement of deaf students in regular schools, we intend to analyze various aspects pertaining to such issues from the perspective of a group of teachers of deaf students. We applied a questionnaire to 36 teachers working in public schools in elementary, middle and high school levels in the state of Paraná. The data analysis showed that the main difficulties mentioned were related either to the teachers themselves or to their students. Teacher related issues ranged from the teachers' lack of knowledge about deafness, or to problems concerning interaction with the deaf and lack of knowledge of LIBRAS (Brazilian sign language); deaf student related issues included the hearing impairments themselves, and the ensuing comprehension difficulties the teachers perceived the subjects presenting. It is important to highlight that these teachers did not relate their problems in teaching to their students' difficulties in learning, as if their insufficient understanding of deafness didn't have direct implications on their deaf students' learning processes. We conclude that including deaf people in regular schools implies more than merely creating new vacancies and providing material resources; both schools and society must be inclusive, assuring equal opportunities to all students and providing qualified teachers who truly believe in education for all.

Abstract: This study aims to present some aspects that characterize the reading and writing conditions of deaf university students, looking into the performance of these deaf students in reading and writing activities. Twenty deaf university students participated in this study. Two tools were used for data collection: a questionnaire with open and closed questions that provided information about daily reading and writing practices that the research subjects engaged in and six texts that were elaborated so as to represent different written genders, which the subjects were asked to read and answer questions related to text content. The results of the analysis showed that each student's reading and writing skills correlates directly to the language practices they engage in their daily lives. In conclusion, within the context of deafness, we must still account for readers and writers that present great difficulty in interpreting and producing written texts, especially in secondary genders. This study highlights the importance of focusing on literacy with a diversity of reading materials throughout the elementary school on through university level.

Abstract: ABSTRACT Purpose: this study aims to discuss speech language pathology undergraduates views about educational speech language pathology actions, and verify the knowledge as well as the theoretical and practical experiences acquired during their graduation course. Methods: 78 undergraduates from speech language therapy in their last year of the graduation course participated in this study. They belong to five Brazilian universities and answered a questionnaire with open questions about their formation emphasizing speech language pathology in the educational context. Results: most undergraduates understand that their graduation courses enabled knowledge on speech language pathology in the educational context; 27.63% reported that this knowledge represents a clinical perspective, and only 14.47% of them reported that they received information about speech language pathology actions that foster language and learning promotion. 43.59% mentioned that speech language pathology function inside schools should be clinical, 25.64% reported that their function must be language promotion, and 14.10% named both ways of action. Conclusions: through the undergraduates' reports, it was possible to notice that graduation courses at this area tend to discuss speech language pathology actions inside school in a clinical perspective. However, it was possible to perceive that a minority of the undergraduates was capable to discuss speech language pathology actions in school through language and education promotion.
