Abstract: We report on the break junction technique and its application to the high T c superconductors LaSrCuO and YBaCuO. In this technique, bulk samples are fractured and the freshly fractured surfaces adjusted to form a tunneling junction with vacuum or liquid helium as the insulating barrier. Precise mechanical adjustment permits the study of electron tunneling phenomena between pieces of a bulk superconductor. The current voltage characteristics of these break junctions are variable indicating sample inhomogeneity. However, some junction settings result in the more familiar quasiparticle signatures in the current voltage characteristics. Low leakage junctions indicate the presence of a sharp superconductive energy gap as well as large variations in junction conductance above the gap edge in both materials.
