    Abstract: Human sirtuin 2 (SIRT2), a member of the sirtuin family, has been considered as a promising drug target in cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, type II diabetes, and bacterial infections. Thus, SIRT2 inhibitors have been involved in effective treatment strategies for related diseases. Using previously established fluorescence-based assays for SIRT2 activity tests, the authors screened their in-house database and identified a compound, 4-(5-((3-(quinolin-5-yl)ureido)methyl)furan-2-yl)benzoic acid (20), which displayed 63 ± 5% and 35 ± 3% inhibition against SIRT2 at 100 μM and 10 μM, respectively. The structure-activity relationship (SAR) analyses of a series of synthesized (5-phenylfuran-2-yl)methanamine derivatives led to the identification of a potent compound 25 with an IC50 value of 2.47 μM, which is more potent than AGK2 (IC50 = 17.75 μM). Meanwhile, 25 likely possesses better water solubility (cLogP = 1.63 and cLogS = −3.63). Finally, the molecular docking analyses indicated that 25 fitted well with the induced hydrophobic pocket of SIRT2.

    Abstract: Atmospheric dustfall samples from the libraries and dormitories of 14 universities in Wuhan, China, were collected and analyzed for 16 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The results showed that the levels of Σ16PAHs in the dustfall from libraries varied from 2.45 to 13.4 μg·g−1, with an average value of 5.06 μg·g−1, while that of dormitories ranged from 2.61 to 10.6 μg·g−1, with an average of 5.19 μg·g−1. The compositions of PAHs in library and dormitory dustfall were similar, and they were dominated by high molecular weight PAHs (HMW-PAHs) (including fluoranthene, benzo(b)fluoranthene, and chrysene), which accounted for 79.2% of the total PAHs. Spatially, the higher levels of PAHs contamination were mainly distributed in areas with high population density and heavy traffic, which suggests that anthropogenic activities made an important contribution to the PAHs emissions. The diagnostic ratios and principal component analyses (PCA) indicated that combustion-related anthropogenic sources, such as petroleum, coal, and biomass combustion, as well as vehicular traffic emission, were the main sources of PAHs bound to dustfall. The toxic equivalent concentrations (BaPeq) of dustfall-bound PAHs ranged from 271 to 2510 μg·kg−1. According to the health risk assessment results, dermal contact was the predominant exposure pathway, followed by ingestion and inhalation. The incremental lifetime cancer risks (ILCRs) of exposure to PAHs in dustfall was 1.230 × 10−6−1.140 × 10−5, which indicates that there are low potential carcinogenic risks in the universities.

    Abstract: In this study, to investigate the contamination characteristics and potential health implications of heavy metals in road dust of the typical county in central China, heavy metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, V, Pb, Zn) in typical road dust with large traffic flow, in different functional areas of Yangxin County, were determined. The results of the geo-accumulation index (Igeo) showed that Co, Mn, Ni, and V were not polluted, while other heavy metals caused different degrees of pollution. According to principal component analysis (PCA), there were three main sources of heavy metals. The result of statistical analysis showed that heavy metal pollution in road dust mainly comes from traffic activities, industrial production activities, building pollution, and the natural environment. The carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks of children and adults were within the safe range, and hand–oral contact was the main exposure route of non-carcinogenic risks. The non-carcinogenic risk and carcinogenic effects of heavy metals in urban road dust were acceptable to children and adults. However, we should still pay attention to the impact of heavy metals on the ecological environment and human health.

    Abstract: To efficiently remove malachite green (MG), a novel calcium-functionalized magnetic biochar (Ca/MBC) was fabricated via a two-step pyrolysis method. Iron-containing oxides endowed the target complexes with magnetic properties, especially the chemotactic binding ability with MG, and the addition of calcium significantly changed the morphology of the material and improved its adsorption performance, especially the chemotactic binding ability with MG, which could be confirmed through FTIR, XPS, and adsorption experiments. Electrostatic adsorption, ligand exchange, and hydrogen bonding acted as essential drivers for an enhanced adsorption process, and the maximum theoretical adsorption capacity was up to 12,187.57 mg/g. Ca/MBC maintained a higher adsorption capacity at pH = 4–12, and after five adsorption–desorption cycles, the adsorption capacity and adsorption rate of MG remained at 1424.2 mg/g and 71.21%, highlighting the advantages of Ca/MBC on adsorbing MG. This study suggests that biochar can be modified by a green synthesis approach to produce calcium-functionalized magnetic biochar with excellent MG removal capacity. The synthetic material can not only remove pollutants from water but also provide an efficient way for soil remediation.

    Abstract: Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. & Nakai) is an economic crop, which is widely cultivated around the world. The ploidy study of watermelon has an important role in field breeding and production, therefore, timely and convenient ploidy detection is necessary to accelerate its application. Traditionally, the ploidy of watermelon was determined by a series of time-consuming, expensive, and less efficient methods. In this study, we developed a more efficient method to simplify and accelerate the polyploidy identification in watermelons. We first confirmed the ploidy of watermelon by traditional tetraploid morphological features and well-established flow cytometry (FCM). Then we developed a reliable real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) technique by quantifying the highly conserved 5S rDNA sequence and its copy numbers. This technique requires less sample collection and has comparable accuracy to FCM, it accelerates the analysis process and provides a new method for the identification of polyploidy of watermelon.

    Abstract: By introducing degrees of freedom (DOFs) in elevation, the elevation-azimuth-Doppler three-dimensional space–time adaptive processing (3D-STAP) methods have better performance when suppressing the nonstationary clutter caused by the Earth’s rotation in space-based early warning radar (SBEWR). However, the 3D-STAP methods use much more auxiliary beams, leading to greater demands on the training samples and heavier computational burdens than the conventional STAP methods. To solve this problem, the ideas of sum–difference beams, generalized multiple beams and Doppler-domain localization are applied here, and three improved dimension-reduced structures of 3D-STAP are proposed in this article. After analyzing the characteristics and distribution of nonstationary clutter for SBEWR, we find that the demands for auxiliary beams are different in elevation, azimuth and Doppler dimension. In addition, the suggestion to choose the number of auxiliary beams in each dimension is given. Simulation experiments are conducted to verify the analysis and evaluate the performance of the proposed methods. The simulation results show that the proposed 3D-STAP methods have better performance and lower computational burdens than typical 3D-STAP methods.

    Abstract: As one of the Maillard reaction products, furosine has been widely reported in a variety of heat-processed foods, while the toxicity of furosine on the reproductive system and related mechanisms are unclear. Here, we constructed an intragastric gavage male mice model (42-day administration, 0.1/0.25/0.5 g furosine/Kg body weight per day) to investigate its effects on mice testicle index, hormones in serum, and mice sperm quality. Besides, the lipid metabonomics analysis was performed to screen out the special metabolites and relatively altered pathways in mice testicle tissue. Mice primary sertoli cells were separated from male mice testicle to validate the role of special metabolites in regulating pathways. We found that furosine affected testicle index, hormones expression level and sperm quality, as well as caused pathological damages in testicle tissue. Phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) (18:0/16:1) was upregulated by furosine both in mice testicle tissue and in primary sertoli cells, meanwhile, PE(18:0/16:1) was proved to activate Cep55/NF-κB/PI3K/Akt/FOX01/TNF-α pathway, and as a functional protein in dairy products, lactoferrin could inhibit expression of this pathway when combined with furosine. In conclusion, for the first time we validated that furosine posed toxic effects on mice sperms and testicle tissue through upregulating PE(18:0/16:1) and activating Cep55/NF-κB/PI3K/Akt/FOX01/TNF-α pathway.

    Abstract: Industrialization and urbanization have resulted in large volumes of municipal wastewater containing abundant refractory humic acid (HA), which is difficult to biodegrade with carcinogenic byproducts and has posed a great threat to human health. Photocatalysis is a promising advanced oxidation process (AOP) for the efficient degradation of HA. In this work, a novel three-step electrochemical method was employed to fabricate electrochemically converted N-doped TiO2 nanotubes/graphene (ENTG) composite film. Compared with traditional hydrothermally synthesized N-doped TiO2/graphene (NTG) nanoparticles, the ENTG photocatalyst exhibited enhanced degradation performance, recyclability and stability. It was found that ETNG can extend the range of light absorption to over 400 nm and narrow the band gap to 2.7 eV. The degradation rate for HA was up to 92.3% under the optimum condition. The preparation mechanism for ENTG is based on an electrochemical reduction–deposition hypothesis, while the degradation mechanism is dependent on adsorption and free radical oxidation. According to a free radical quenching test, both •OH and •O2− radicals were produced, and •OH played the dominant role in HA degradation. In general, ENTG is a promising photocatalyst for further application in municipal wastewater treatment.

    Abstract: Gesture recognition acts as a key enabler for user-friendly human-computer interfaces (HCI). To bridge the human-computer barrier, numerous efforts have been devoted to designing accurate fine-grained gesture recognition systems. Recent advances in wireless sensing hold promise for a ubiquitous, non-invasive and low-cost system with existing Wi-Fi infrastructures. In this paper, we propose DeepNum, which enables fine-grained finger gesture recognition with only a pair of commercial Wi-Fi devices. The key insight of DeepNum is to incorporate the quintessence of deep learning-based image processing so as to better depict the influence induced by subtle finger movements. In particular, we make multiple efforts to transfer sensitive Channel State Information (CSI) into depth radio images, including antenna selection, gesture segmentation and image construction, followed by noisy image purification using high-dimensional relations. To fulfill the restrictive size requirements of deep learning model, we propose a novel region-selection method to constrain the image size and select qualified regions with dominant color and texture features. Finally, a 7-layer Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and SoftMax function are adopted to achieve automatic feature extraction and accurate gesture classification. Experimental results demonstrate the excellent performance of DeepNum, which recognizes 10 finger gestures with overall accuracy of 98% in three typical indoor scenarios.
