    Abstract: This study investigated metabolite changes in three pomelo cultivars during postharvest senescence using 1H NMR-based metabolic profiling. Three pomelo cultivars, ‘Hongroumiyou’, ‘Bairoumiyou’ and ‘Huangroumiyou’, abbreviated as “R”, “W” and “Y” according to the color of their juice sacs, were stored at 25 °C for 90 days, and NMR was applied to determine the metabolite changes in juice sacs during storage. Fifteen metabolites were identified, including organic acids, sugars, amino acids, fatty acids, phenols and naringin. Partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) was used to screen the significant metabolites according to the variable importance for the projection (VIP) scores in three pomelo cultivars during 90 days of storage. Additionally, eight metabolites, naringin, alanine, asparagine, choline, citric acid, malic acid, phosphocholine and β-D-glucose, were screened to be the crucial biomarkers with VIP 〉 1. The undesirable flavor of “bitter and sour” during the 60 days of storage was mainly attributed to the naringin, citric acid and sugars. According to the correlation analysis, the citric acid content determined by NMR showed a significantly positive relationship with that analyzed by HPLC. These findings suggested that NMR technology was accurate and efficient for metabolomic analysis of pomelo fruit, and the 1H NMR-based metabolic profiling can be efficient during quality evaluation and useful for improving the fruit flavor quality during postharvest storage.

    Abstract: Flame recognition is an important technique in firefighting, but existing image flame-detection methods are slow, low in accuracy, and cannot accurately identify small flame areas. Current detection technology struggles to satisfy the real-time detection requirements of firefighting drones at fire scenes. To improve this situation, we developed a YOLOv5-based real-time flame-detection algorithm. This algorithm can detect flames quickly and accurately. The main improvements are: (1) The embedded coordinate attention mechanism helps the model more precisely find and detect the target of interest. (2) We advanced the detection layer for small targets to enhance the model’s associated identification ability. (3) We introduced a novel loss function, α-IoU, and improved the accuracy of the regression results. (4) We combined the model with transfer learning to improve its accuracy. The experimental results indicate that the enhanced YOLOv5′s mAP can reach 96.6%, 5.4% higher than the original. The model needed 0.0177 s to identify a single image, demonstrating its efficiency. In summary, the enhanced YOLOv5 network model’s overall efficiency is superior to that of the original algorithm and existing mainstream identification approaches.

    Abstract: Since the introduction of a series of collective forest tenure reforms in China, diverse forestland mortgage financial products have been available even in rural areas. It is difficult for rural households to make appropriate financial decisions in order to increase their income due to a lack of financial knowledge and relevant skills. It is important to analyze the relationship between financial literacy, borrowing behavior, and rural household income. Based on the learning-by-doing theory, the credit constraint theory, and the data obtained from the survey of 460 households in five rural countries of Liaoning Province, alternative econometric models were used to estimate the “Financial Literacy-Borrowing Behavior-Household Income” transmission channel. The findings reveal that the financial literacy levels are positively associated with household income and that there is an inverted U relationship between them which is low on both sides and high in the middle. In addition, the financial literacy has a significantly positive effect on the farmers’ credit behavior, which in turn promotes their income growth. The results provide a new perspective on the study and a clear explanation of the role of financial literacy in improving the loan amountsavailable in China’s rural areas. The paper concludes with recommendations for policymakers to prioritize financial education that will promote and support credit constraint reduction in collective forest areas.

    Abstract: Hybrid sterility is the major obstacle to the utilization of inter-subspecific heterosis in hybrid rice breeding. The S5 locus, composed of three adjacent genes ORF3, ORF4, and ORF5, plays a crucial role in regulating indica/japonica hybrids’ female sterility. Through a series of crosses involving 38 parents, three alleles of S5, ORF3+ORF4−ORF5n, ORF3+ORF4+ORF5n, and ORF3−/ORF4−/ORF5n, all could be regarded as wide-compatibility alleles, and when crossed with indica or japonica rice, they all showed significantly high fertility. Then, in order to explore the genes’ function, we further knocked out genes by using CRISPR/Cas9-based genome editing. Our results demonstrate that the ORF3+ was not just the protector in the killer-protector system, and knocking out ORF3 of the indica allele seriously affected the rice’s normal development. We observed the concrete enhancing hybrid spikelet fertility from the crosses between the ORF4+ knockout japonica materials with indica varieties. By conducting the comparative RNA-Seq analysis of young spikelets, we found that the ORF4+/ORF4− could modulate the hybrid fertility by affecting the expressions of genes related to the function of the Golgi apparatus. This study indicated that knocking out the ORF4+ of the japonica allele or using the alleles carrying ORF5n would provide effective approaches to overcome indica/japonica hybrid female sterility in rice breeding.

    Abstract: The nanocone-shaped carbon nanotubes field-emitter array (NCNA) is a near-ideal field-emitter array that combines the advantages of geometry and material. In contrast to previous methods of field-emitter array, laser ablation is a low-cost and clean method that does not require any photolithography or wet chemistry. However, nanocone shapes are hard to achieve through laser ablation due to the micrometer-scale focusing spot. Here, we develop an ultraviolet (UV) laser beam patterning technique that is capable of reliably realizing NCNA with a cone-tip radius of ≈300 nm, utilizing optimized beam focusing and unique carbon nanotube–light interaction properties. The patterned array provided smaller turn-on fields (reduced from 2.6 to 1.6 V/μm) in emitters and supported a higher (increased from 10 to 140 mA/cm2) and more stable emission than their unpatterned counterparts. The present technique may be widely applied in the fabrication of high-performance CNTs field-emitter arrays.

    Abstract: The 9-cis-epoxy carotenoid dioxygenase (NCED) is an enzyme that is crucial in abscisic acid (ABA) biosynthesis, and its role is vital in plant development and abiotic stress. However, the function of the NCED family in Rosaceae plant species remains unclear. Through genome-wide screening, we identified 10, 10, 11, 12 and 13 NCED genes in Prunus mume, Prunus apricot, Prunus salicina, Prunus persica, and Rosa chinensis, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis showed that these NCED genes were divided into six groups. Gene structure analysis showed that the number and size of introns were relatively constant in each subfamily, while the motif composition differed significantly among them. Collinearity analysis revealed a high homology of NCEDs in the Prunus genus. Promoter cis-acting element analysis showed that eight PmNCEDs contained abscisic acid-responsive elements (ABRE). Furthermore, expression profile analysis based on qRT-PCR revealed that PmNCED3, PmNCED8 and PmNCED9 were up-regulated in response to low temperature stress, suggesting their significant role in the plant’s response to cold stress. These findings provide insights into the structure and evolution of PmNCEDs and lay the foundation for further studies regarding their function during cold stress.

    Abstract: Liver fibrosis is a pathological process characterized by the excessive synthesis and accumulation of extracellular matrix proteins (ECMs) contributed mainly by the activated hepatic stellate cells (HSCs). Currently, no direct and effective anti-fibrotic agents have been approved for clinical use worldwide. Although the dysregulation of Eph receptor tyrosine kinase EphB2 has been reported to associate with the development of liver fibrosis, the involvement of other Eph family members in liver fibrosis remains underexplored. In this study, we found that the expression of EphB1 is significantly increased accompanying remarkable neddylation in activated HSCs. Mechanistically, this neddylation enhanced the kinase activity of EphB1 by the prevention of its degradation, thereby promoting the proliferation, migration, and activation of HSCs. Our findings revealed the involvement of EphB1 in the development of liver fibrosis through its neddylation, which provides new insights into the Eph receptor signaling and a potential target for the treatment of liver fibrosis.

    Abstract: An ultra-high-sensitivity, miniaturized Fabry-Perot interferometric (FPI) fiber-optic microphone (FOM) has been developed, utilizing a silicon cantilever as an acoustic transducer. The volumes of the cavity and the FOM are determined to be 60 microliters and 102 cubic millimeters, respectively. The FOM has acoustic pressure sensitivities of 1506 nm/Pa at 2500 Hz and 26,773 nm/Pa at 3233 Hz. The minimum detectable pressure (MDP) and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the designed FOM are 0.93 μPa/Hz1/2 and 70.14 dB, respectively, at an acoustic pressure of 0.003 Pa. The designed FOM has the characteristics of ultra-high sensitivity, low MDP, and small size, which makes it suitable for the detection of weak acoustic signals, especially in the field of miniaturized all-optical photoacoustic spectroscopy.

    Abstract: With the increasing demands for detailed design of composite aircraft structures, the method of covering all damages with low design allowables cannot meet the current requirements for aircraft structure design. Herein, this paper proposes a novel algorithm for design allowable determination of composite laminates by combining the damage distribution with damage factor model of design allowable, so as to provide different structures with more accurate design allowables based on their initial damages. For the composite laminates with initial delaminations, a model describing the effect of delamination size and depth position on the compression design allowable is developed and the compression design allowable of different aircraft structures are individually determined by employing abundant initial delamination statistics. Compared with the design allowable offered by the single-point method, the design allowable based on the initial damage can be increased by at least 5% to 20%, greatly improving the economic benefits of the aircraft structures and providing an important support for the damage tolerance design of the composite structures.

    Abstract: A highly sensitive photoacoustic (PA) microcavity gas sensor for leak detection is proposed. The miniature and low-cost gas sensor mainly consisted of a micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) microphone and a stainless-steel capillary with two small holes opened on the side wall. Different from traditional PA sensors, the designed low-power sensor had no gas valves and pumps. Gas could diffuse into the stainless-steel PA microcavity from two holes. The volume of the cavity in the sensor was only 7.9 μL. We use a 1650.96 nm distributed feedback (DFB) laser and the second-harmonic wavelength modulation spectroscopy (2f-WMS) method to measure PA signals. The measurement result of diffused methane (CH4) gas shows a response time of 5.8 s and a recovery time of 5.2 s. The detection limit was achieved at 1.7 ppm with a 1-s lock-in integral time. In addition, the calculated normalized noise equivalent absorption (NNEA) coefficient was 1.2 × 10−8 W·cm−1·Hz−1/2. The designed PA microcavity sensor can be used for the early warning of gas leakage.
