Abstract: Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a potentially life-threatening vascular abnormality, that, if ruptured, is almost universally fatal without repair, and is associated with up to 50% mortality even if repaired in hospital. To date, there is no drug therapy that has clinically proven benefit to reduce or prevent expansion of AAA. The aim of this study was to investigate whether Daxx could affect AAA through inhibiting the PI3K/AKT/ID2 signaling pathway mediated by transforming growth factor β-1 (TGFβ1). Methods The AAA model was constructed by injecting angiotensin Ⅱ (Ang-Ⅱ) into rats, and the Daxx lentivirus vector was constructed. Hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining was used to detect the wall thickness of the abdominal aorta in rats. The gene and protein expressions in abdominal aortic tissues were detected utilizing western blot, immunohistochemistry (IHC) and fluorescence quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Finally, the concentration of TGF-β1 in abdominal aortic tissue was determined by ELISA. Results The abdominal aortic wall thickness was decreased in the Daxx expression group (by HE staining), and Daxx overexpression markedly reduced the protein expression levels of MMP2 and MMP9. Proteins related to the PI3K/AKT/ID2 signaling pathway were highly enhanced in the aneurysm wall of rats, but were reduced following Daxx addition. Moreover, Daxx reduced the damage to elastin (by IHC), and the expression levels of α-SMA and SM22α were up-regulated by Daxx (by qRT-PCR). The concentration of TGF-β1 was correlated with the activation of the PI3K/AKT/ID2 signaling pathway (by ELISA), whereas AKT overexpression weakened the inhibitory effect of Daxx. Conclusion Daxx ameliorated several mechanisms that contributed to expansion of AAA suppressing the tissue concentration of TGF-β1, thereby inhibiting the activation of the PI3K/AKT/ID2 signaling pathway. This evidence might form the basis to develop a therapeutic target for AAA.

Abstract: Pulmonary vein (PV) data are commonly measured on multiplanar image reformation (MPR) images and volume rendering (VR) images. Purpose To compared and analyze the advantages and disadvantages of PV data based on VR images and MPR images. Material and Methods A total of 94 patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) with imaging data were included in the study. The respective image postprocessing time and the three surgical interventionists’ preferences for the two images were recorded. A paired t-test or chi-square test was used to compare their difference, and P  〈  0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results There was no statistically significant difference between the data values including the maximal and minimal ostial diameters of the left superior PV (LSPV), the left inferior PV (LIPV), the right superior PV (RSPV), and the right inferior PV (RIPV) obtained by VR and MPR images ( P  〉  0.05). Yet, the mean postprocessing time of VR images (15.10 ± 3.05 min) was shorter compared to MPR images (16.54 ± 2.60 min) ( t = 22.84, P  〈  0.05). All three surgical interventionists preferred VR images (accounted for 85.1%, 86.2%, and 84.0%, respectively), and there was no statistical difference in the degree of image preference among the three (chi-square = 0.596, P = 0.963). Conclusion PV data measurement could be performed on both VR and MRP images; however, the data on VR images were more intuitive and more accessible for interventional surgeons.

Abstract: As is known, estimation of the dynamic states of a vehicle plays an important role in safety control, but it is difficult to obtain the vehicle states accurately without expensive measurement instruments because of the non-linear and huge hysteretic characteristics. Nowadays, many methods have been adopted to solve this problem, the results of which are not ideal because it is assumed that the key parameters are constant, in particular in severe manoeuvres. This paper develops a novel estimation method for the vehicle states using the extended Kalman filter with a fusion algorithm. First, the optimal key parameters (the equivalent roll stiffness and the equivalent roll damping) are identified by genetic algorithms using the data from the relationship between the key parameters and the vehicle real-time states. Then, a novel non-linear observer for the side-slip angle and the roll angle is established on the basis of a four-degree-of-freedom vehicle model by utilizing the identified key parameters and the sensors mounted on normal vehicles. The performance of the observer is investigated using both simulations and real-vehicle experiments. The results demonstrate the reasonable accuracy of the estimation method proposed in this paper.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to establish a nomogram model for individualized early prediction of the 3-month prognosis in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) who were treated with intravenous recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rt-PA) thrombolysis. Methods: A total of 691 patients were included in this study; 564 patients were included in the training cohort, while 127 patients were included in the test cohort. The main outcome measure was a 3-month unfavorable outcome (modified Rankin Scale 3–6). To construct the nomogram model, stepwise logistic regression analysis was applied to select the significant predictors of the outcome. The discriminative performance of the model was assessed by calculating the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC-ROC). A decision curve analysis was used to evaluate prognostic value of the model. Results: The initial National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale [NIHSS, odds ratio (OR), 1.35; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.28–1.44; p  〈  0.001], delta NIHSS (changes in the NIHSS score from baseline to 24 h, OR, 0.75; 95% CI, 0.70–0.79; p  〈  0.001), hypertension (OR, 2.07; 95% CI, 1.32–3.31; p = 0.002), hyperhomocysteinemia (Hhcy, OR, 2.18; 95% CI, 1.20–4.11; p = 0.013), and the ratio of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) to low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (HDL-C/LDL-C, OR, 3.29; 95% CI, 1.00–10.89; p = 0.049) (N2H3) were found to be independent predictors of a 3-month unfavorable outcome from multivariate logistic regression analysis and were incorporated in the N2H3 nomogram model. The AUC-ROC of the training cohort was 0.872 (95% CI, 0.841–0.902), and the AUC-ROC of the test cohort was 0.900 (95% CI, 0.848–0.953). Conclusion: The study presented the N2H3 nomogram model, with initial NIHSS score, delta NIHSS, hypertension, Hhcy, and HDL-C/LDL-C as predictors. It therefore provides an individualized early prediction of the 3-month unfavorable outcome in AIS patients treated with intravenous rt-PA thrombolysis.

Abstract: To study the biological functions and applications of human amniotic epithelial cell-derived extracellular vesicles (hAEC-EVs), the cargos of hAEC-EVs were analyzed using miRNA sequencing and proteomics analysis. The hAECs and hAEC-EVs in this study had specific characteristics. Multi-omics analyses showed that extracellular matrix (ECM) reorganization, inhibition of excessive myofibroblasts, and promotion of target cell adhesion to the ECM were their primary functions. We evaluated the application of hAEC-EVs for corneal alkali burn healing in rabbits and elucidated the fundamental mechanisms. Slit-lamp images revealed that corneal alkali burns induced central epithelial loss, stromal haze, iris, and pupil obscurity in rabbits. Slit-lamp examination and histological findings indicated that hAEC-EVs facilitated re-epithelialization of the cornea after alkali burns, reduced scar formation and promoted the restoration of corneal tissue transparency. Significantly fewer α-SMA-positive myofibroblasts were observed in the hAEC-EV-treated group than the PBS group. HAEC-EVs effectively promoted the proliferation and migration of hCECs and hCSCs in vitro and activated the focal adhesion signaling pathway. We demonstrated that hAEC-EVs were excellent cell-free candidates for the treatment of ECM lesion-based diseases, including corneal alkali burns. HAEC-EVs promoted ECM reorganization and cell adhesion of target tissues or cells via orderly activation of the focal adhesion signaling pathway.

Abstract: NiCr–Ag composite solid lubricant coating was deposited on stainless steel by atmospheric plasma spray. The microhardness, phase composition and microstructure of as-sprayed coating were characterized. Meanwhile, the friction and wear behaviour of as-sprayed coating sliding against ceramic (Si 3 N 4 ) ball in air, argon and oxygen were evaluated using a ball-on-disc friction and wear test rig. It was found that when sliding against Si 3 N 4 in oxygen, the composite coating underwent severe oxidative wear and splat delamination, showing the highest friction coefficient and wear rate. When sliding against Si 3 N 4 in argon, the composite coating had the lowest friction coefficient and wear rate; and in this case, no crack and splat delamination could be observed on the worn surface because of the elimination of oxidation of the coating and enrichment of solid lubricant silver on sliding surface in inert atmosphere. In addition, the friction coefficients of the as-sprayed coating in all three atmospheres decreased with the increase of sliding speed or load.

Abstract: This paper investigates the relationship between housing investment and economic growth in China, utilising province-level data via recently developed panel unit root tests and panel co-integration analysis. The empirical results suggest a stable long-run relationship between housing investment, non-housing investment and GDP in China. In addition, the existence is demonstrated of bi-directional Granger causality between housing investment and GDP at the national level. The panel error correction model supports the hypothesis that housing investment appears to have a dual role, acting as both a driver and follower in China’s economic fluctuations. However, the impacts of housing investment on economic growth in three sub-regions are found to be strikingly different.

Abstract: Atlanto-axial dislocations (AADs) are potentially fatal disturbances with high spinal cord compression syndrome. As surgeons are still uncertain who is likely to benefit the most from surgery, a prediction tool is needed to provide decision-making support. Methods The model was established based on 108 patients with AADs using multiple binary logistic regression analysis and evaluated by calibration plot and the area under the receiver operating curve (AUC). Bootstrapping was used for internal validation. Results The prognostic model can be expressed as: logit(P) = −2.2428 + 0.3168SCOPE − 2.0375SIGNAL, in which two covariates were accepted (SCORE represents the preoperative modified Japanese Orthopedic Association (mJOA) score and SIGNAL represents the intramedullary hyperintense T 2 -weighted imaging (T 2 WI) with AUC = 0.8081). Conclusions The model was internally valid, and the preoperative mJOA score and hyperintense T 2 WI were important predictors of outcomes. The threshold was defined as logit(P) = −0.7282 according to the receiver operating curve (ROC).
