    Beschreibung: The Dumont d’Urville Sea (East Antarctic region) has been less investigated for DNA barcoding and molecular taxonomy than other parts of the Southern Ocean, such as the Ross Sea and the Antarctic Peninsula. The Collaborative East Antarctic MARine Census (CEAMARC) took place in this area during the austral summer of 2007–2008. The Australian vessel RSV Aurora Australis collected very diverse samples of demersal and benthic organisms. The specimens were sorted centrally, and then distributed to taxonomic experts for molecular and morphological taxonomy and identification, especially barcoding. The COI sequences generated from CEAMARC material provide a sizeable proportion of the Census of Antarctic Marine Life barcodes although the studies are still ongoing, and represent the only source of sequences for a number of species. Barcoding appears to be a valuable method for identification within most groups, despite low divergences and haplotype sharing in a few species, and it is also useful as a preliminary taxonomic exploration method. Several new species are being described. CEAMARC samples have already provided new material for phylogeographic and phylogenetic studies in cephalopods, pycnogonids, teleost fish, crinoids and sea urchins, helping these studies to provide a better insight in the patterns of evolution in the Southern Ocean.

    Beschreibung: A 2002 multibeam sonar survey of Mauna Loa’s western flank revealed ten submarine radial vents and three submarine lava flows. Only one submarine radial vent was known previously. The ages of these vents are constrained by eyewitness accounts, geologic relationships, Mn-Fe coatings, and geochemical stratigraphy; they range from 128 years B.P. to possibly 47 ka. Eight of the radial vents produced degassed lavas despite eruption in water depths sufficient to inhibit sulfur degassing. These vents formed truncated cones and short lava flows. Two vents produced undegassed lavas that created ‘‘irregular’’ cones and longer lava flows. Compositionally and isotopically, the submarine radial vent lavas are typical of Mauna Loa lavas, except two cones that erupted alkalic lavas. He-Sr isotopes for the radial vent lavas follow Mauna Loa’s evolutionary trend. The compositional and isotopic heterogeneity of these lavas indicates most had distinct parental magmas. Bathymetry and acoustic backscatter results, along with photography and sampling during four JASON2 dives, are used to produce a detailed geologic map to evaluate Mauna Loa’s submarine geologic history. The new map shows that the 1877 submarine eruption was much larger than previously thought, resulting in a 10% increase for recent volcanism. Furthermore, although alkalic lavas were found at two radial vents, there is no systematic increase in alkalinity among these or other Mauna Loa lavas as expected for a dying volcano. These results refute an interpretation that Mauna Loa’s volcanism is waning. The submarine radial vents and flows cover 29 km2 of seafloor and comprise a total volume of ~2 x 109 m3 of lava, reinforcing the idea that submarine lava eruptions are important in the growth of oceanic island volcanoes even after they emerged above sea level.

    Notizen: The effects of the electron diffraction in highly oriented pyrolytic graphite are studied in an incident electron beam of energy range 500–700 eV using scanning Auger microscopy. The intensity of the exiting electrons monitored by a cylindrical-mirror analyzer can be well interpreted as the joint effect of incident and exit forward focusing along the close-packed 〈21¯1¯2〉-type atomic chains, with the contribution from forward focusing along the secondary close-packed atomic chains increasing rapidly as the beam energy increases. Incident beam effects contribute greatly to the variation in the intensity of the exiting electrons. Increasing the beam energy in this range also increases the anisotropy observed in the angular distribution of the intensity of both elastically scattered and Auger electrons. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Summary Territory size in the herbivorous reef fish, Parma victoriae, (Pisces: Pomacentridae) is primarily determined by local density patterns and is independent of changes in food levels (Norman and Jones 1984). However, while individual readily expand territories in response to having their neighbours removed, they appear not to increase total food consumption. Individuals with large territories may benefit from improved food quality. Here we test the hypothesis that expanded territories increase access to preferred food types. A preliminary comparison of the relative proportions of algal species consumed and those present in the field indicated that feeding was highly selective. Strong feeding preferences were indicated by a field ‘cafeteria’ experiment, in which algal species were presented to individuals in equal amounts. Selectivity indices calculated from diet and availability measures were positively correlated with the feeding preference rankings. Individuals examined from two territory size categories (〈10 m2 and 〉 10 m2) did not exhibit significant differences in feeding prefernces. However, they differed greatly in terms of the makeup of their diets. Higher ranking algae such as Champia zostricola and Rhodoglossum sp. were consumed in greater proportions on large territories. Algal abundances within territories also differed for the two groups. Some of the less abundant, high ranking food species were found in greater quantities per unit area on large territories. The differences in diet were not solely explained by changes in availability. The appropriate comparison showed that whereas individuals on large territories fed in a highly selective manner, those on small territories consumed algae in proportion to their availability. A neighbour removal experiment supported the hypothesis that territory expansion results in an increase in the consumption of preferred algal species.

    Notizen: Summary Factors governing the size of territories defended by the pomacentrid reef fish, Parma victoriae, were investigated, prompted by contradictory predictions in the literature concerning the effects of food supply and competitors. Observations were carried out over the non-breeding period (March–October) on a medium density population in which territories were partially contiguous. The territory size of adult fish varied between 3 and 26 m2, and was inversely correlated with local densities of conspecifics. The same range in territory size was found for both males and females, which did not differ in the time they spent on territory defence and foraging activities. No correlation existed between territory size and the abundance of algal food, body size, age or time spent on territory defence. Also, there was little variation in territory size over time, despite seasonal changes in the abundance of food algae. Experimental reduction of food supplies on isolated territories of males and females had no effect on territory size. In a higher density habitat an experiment was carried out in which population density and food abundance were simultaneously manipulated. This showed that territory size was primarily determined by intraspecific interactions, as territories exhibited considerable increases in size upon removal of neighbours. No changes in the size of defended areas resulted from either artificial increases or decreases of food levels. There were also no changes in the time spent on defence of territories, foraging time or feeding rates associated with food manipulations or territory expansion, which suggested that food was not a limited resource. This conflicted with current theories proposed to explain territory defence and expansion. It is hypothesized that intraspecific interactions constrain territory size well below the optimum in terms of the abundance of preferred food algal species.

    Notizen: The surface compositional characteristics of two palladium metal electrode inks, air-dried on barium titanate (BaTiO3) dielectric ceramic substrates, have been studied using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It is found the exposure of the inks to the x-ray beam during the time of analysis required for data acquisition causes surface damage. Changes in the C 1s and O 1s regions in particular, which reflect modifications to the organic, polymeric binder materials present in the inks, have been investigated as a function of x-ray exposure time, incident ploton energy and beam power levels. Additional complexity in the C 1s spectral envelope that cannot be explained in terms of the expected contributing organic functionalities is observed. This is explained in terms of a difference in charging effects experienced by adventitious carbon species and those intimately associated with palladium metal centres.The degree of damage induced by the x-ray beam under specific operating conditions has been compared also with that caused by exposure of the surfaces to an electron beam. Indications of the time scales and operating parameters for conducting XPS experiments on the unmodified surface, prior to surface degradation, are given.

    Notizen: The cellulose derivatives ethyl cellulose and ethyl-hydroxyethyl cellulose (EHEC) have been studied by XPS in the form of solvent-cast films. All the films, as well as a sample of cellulose used as a standard material, show significant surface degradation on irradiation in the time period consistent with XPS data acquisition. Under the experimental conditions employed here the four materials studied behave similarly, in that a reaction occurs in the cellulose skeleton, resulting in dehydroxylation of some of the pyranose units in the surface layers, with concomitant elimination of molecules of water.An infrared (IR) analysis of the ethyl cellulose and high-molicular-weight EHEC films indicates the presence of a strong carbonyl band, no evidence for which is found in the XPS spectra. However, other features of the IR spectra support the proposed dehydroxylation mechanism. The origin of this inconsistency is nuclear but may be attributable to either differences in the surface and bulk degradation products formed or to the detection differences of the XPS and IR techniques.

    Beschreibung: The first encounter with a live male blanket octopus, Tremoctopus violaceus Chiaie, 1830, illustrates the most extreme example of sexual size‐dimorphism in a non‐microscopic animal. Females attain sizes of up to 2 m long—almost 2 orders of magnitude larger than the 2.4‐cm‐long male. Weight ratios between the sexes are at least 10 000:1 and are likely to reach 40 000:1. Sexual selection and the unique defensive strategy of carrying cnidarian stinging tentacles may both have contributed to the evolution of this extreme size‐dimorphism. Such dimorphism is not seen in any other animal remotely as large.
