Abstract: The large sea urchins (Diadematidae) are widely distributed worldwide, from temperate to tropical waters. Diadematidae is an important herbivore in the coral reef ecosystem through herbivore-algal-coral interaction, which maintains the reef’s health. Many studies of Diadematidae have been performed around world, but in Vietnam, there is little known about the ecology of this group. Here, we first investigated the assemblage structure of Diadematidae in Northern Vietnam. We observed 43 sites of representative coral reefs in Ba Mun - Co To, Cat Ba - Ha Long, and Hon Me. Based on the surveys, we found four species of considerable size sea urchins, of which the most common species is Diadema setosum (79.8% of the total), Enchinothrix calamaris (10.1%), E. diadema (8.3%), and D. savignyi (1.8%). Among three study regions, Hon Me is the most diverse. In addition, Hon Me also has the highest density of sea urchins. However, this value is generally low compared to that in Southern Vietnam and other neighboring countries. Further study is needed to investigate the ecology and reproductive biology of Diadematidae to provide fundamental information for sustainable exploitation and conservation.

Abstract: The knowledge of marine algae species composition is imperative not only for understanding the structure, function and biogeographical affinities but also for planning strategies for marine algae conservation and management. This study was carried out to determine the diverse species and evaluate some use-values of green macroalgae from genus Ulva in Hai Phong, where many different habitats such as estuarine floodplains, lagoons or small bays and diverse in the bottom (hard, sandy, sandy-mud bottom). Ulva samples were collected at 11 sites in 5 areas in 2021. Based on the results of species composition, were identified 11 species of the genus Ulva. The species composition of the genus Ulva in Hai Phong accounted for 73.3% of the total species recorded in Vietnam; accounting for 19.6% of the total number of Asian species, and 12.9% of the total number of Ulva species in the world. The Cluster and MDS (Multi-Dimensional Scaling analysis) on the similarity in vertical distribution and geographical distribution among the studied species. Based on the active ingredients and uses value, the studied determined 9 species of genus Ulva in Hai Phong were identified with economic value.

Abstract: In this paper, the compositions and contents of fatty acids in the total lipid extracts of 69 red seaweed samples belonging to 9 families (Gracilariaceae, Hypneaceae, Ceramiaceae, Bangiaceae, Hylamaniaceae, Bonnemaisoniaceae, Phyllophoraceae, Rhodymeniaceae and Halymeniaceae) are studied. According to the results, 56 fatty acids are identified, in which 12 fatty acids were considered “fatty acid markers” for the botanical classification (Chemotaxonomy) of red seaweed species such as C14:0, C15:0, C16:0, C16:1n-7, C18:0, C18:1n-9, C18:1n-7, C18:2n-6, C20:3n-6, C20:4n-6, C20:5n-3 and C22:0. By using principal component analysis method (PCA), the analysis result on two-dimensional chart showed that families of red seaweed are distributed into separate regions. Classification tree diagram of the red seaweed species based on essential fatty acid composition is also given.

Abstract: Hang ngầm và hồ nước mặn là 2 dạng sinh cảnh khá phổ biến ở Hạ Long và Cát Bà, do nhiều nguyên nhân khác nhau đến nay chúng rất ít được quan tâm nghiên cứu.

Abstract: The results of research on characteristic of distribution and taxa structure of Chlorophytes (Chlorophyta) at nine islands of Truong Sa archipelago (Truong Sa, Da Tay, Thuyen Chai, Toc Tan, Sinh Ton, Nam Yet, Song Tu Tay, Da Nam and Son Ca) indicate that there are 67 species of Chlorophytes, they belong to 4 orders, 14 families and 22 genera. The number of species at the sampling islands ranged from 13 species/island (Toc Tan isd.) to 43 species/island (Nam Yet isd.) with the average of 25.5 species/island. Sorensen similarity coefficient at the sampling sections ranged from 0.24 (between Song Tu Tay and Thuyen Chai) to 0.74 (between Nam Yet and Song Tu Tay) with the average of 0.45. Among 67 species in nine islands, there are 10 species distributed only in the intertidal zone (they are occupying 14.9% of total species), 14 species (31.4%) in subtidal zone only and 43 species (64.2%) in both intertidal zone and subtidal zone. The number of species concentrates on some genera (Halimeda: 10 species; Caulerpa: 10 species; Codium: 6 species,...), they belong to Codiacea, Siphonales. There are some genera with only 1 species (Tydemania, Anadyomene, Microdictyon,...).

Abstract: Sargassum is a genus of brown macroalgae in the class Phaeophyta, distributed widely in all oceans, including those of Vietnam. Species of this genus have been proven to possess diverse biological activities, such as antioxidant, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory, along with many benefits and applications for human health, including anti-diabetic, obesity, and thrombosis. These benefits arise from a diverse chemical composition, with compounds such as fucoidan, mannitol, and especially phlorotannin—a group of phenolic derivatives found predominantly in brown algae. In this study, we evaluated and optimized the factors that affected the extraction process of phlorotannins from Sargassum swartzii (Turn.) C. Ag., a common species of brown macroalgae in Vietnam. The process utilized ethanol and water as the solvent system, and the extraction process was assisted with the use of microwaves. To carry out optimization studies, Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was adopted according to a Central Composite Desisgn (CCD), taking four processing factors into consideration, ethanol concentration (%, v/v), extraction time (minutes), solvent/material ratio (v/w), and microwave output power (W) as independent variables. Phlorotannin concentration (mgPhE/g) and extract mass (mg) were regarded as optimization outcomes. Experimental conditions that produced the highest phlorotannin yield from 10 g of S. swartzii are as follows: Extraction time of 65 minutes, ethanol concentration of 52%, microwave output power of 613 W, and solvent/material ratio of 33/1 (v/w). These conditions corresponded to a phlorotannin concentration of 5.59 ± 0.11 mg PhE/g, and a total extract content of 27.88 ± 0.13 mg/g.
