Kurzfassung:
Scorpion‐like molecular architectures have been created by self‐assembly as a result of molecular recognition between π‐electron‐rich aromatic units (such as 1,4‐dioxy‐benzene or 1,5‐dioxynaphthalene ring systems) and π‐electron‐deficient bipyridinium units. The design and synthesis of several such compounds are described; one of these, the system shown here, can be reversibly electrochemically switched between states in which the n‐electron‐rich unit is inside or outside the cavity of the cyclophane. Various techniques were employed to establish the structures of these compounds and the occurrence in some of them of switching processes. magnified image
