Abstract: With the rapid growth of processing and storage technologies and the success of the Internet, system resources are cheaper, more powerful and more advanced than ever. This technology helps to achieve a new computer model known as cloud computing, in which resources are provided as Internet applications that can be accessed and released from users on the Internet. Business organizations are increasing the cloud experience and they begin to change more important business functions onto cloud platforms. Cloud computing has been growing for companies around the world, but many are finding higher costs and more obstacles to cloud computing adoption than organization anticipated. As this is the latest trend in information technology, some companies are moving toward cloud computing. On the other hand, other companies cannot even take into consideration the idea of having their sensitive data outside their premises. Both of these cases represent companies that are just not very well informed. Over the past two decades, the online business organizations have been facing many commercial problems and challenges in their businesses such as managing available resources effectively, security threats in managing IT resources and high implementation cost. Therefore, this study reveal the literature review of the benefits can be served by cloud computing and the issues and challenges that Online business organizations (SME) faced, and how cloud computing is useful in solving these issues in Sri Lanka.

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors that influence the adoption of Software as Service (SaaS) at Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) that have adopted online business in Sri Lanka. Prior studies have shown that SMEs significantly benefit due to the adoption of SaaS. The research sough to explain the adoption of SaaS using Awareness, Trust, Cost, Top Management Support, Complexity and Relative advantage. Conceptualization of this researcher’s variables and their interrelationship have been supported by theory of Diffusion of Innovation (DOI) of Rogers’ (1962) and Technological Organizational and Environmental (TOE) Framework of Tornatzky and Fleisher (1990). The study was conducted among 250 randomly selected SMEs adopting online business using questionnaires addressed to managerial and ICT professionals who were capable of making ICT decision at SMEs under study. However only 224 questionnaires were returned with complete data required for the purpose of analysis. The study employed principal component analysis to reduce the data and employed Ordinary Least Square (OLS) to test the relationship between the variables. It is found that Cost (CT), Complexity (CX) and Relative Advantages (RA) are having significant impact on SaaS adoption in SMEs in Sri Lanka. This study extends the existing body of knowledge by providing empirical support for explaining SaaS adoption by SMEs in Sri Lanka. The finding will help various parties engaging in promoting the adoption of SaaS among SMEs with the view of SMEs’ development in Sri Lanka. On this basis, the researchers are able to recommend firstly, that SaaS is playing a significant role for the development of SMEs in this area of study and finally, that software vendors, policy makers, technological consultants and application developers intend to adopt SaaS should consider the validated model tested in this research study.

Abstract: There is a relationship between the fiscal deficit and inflation, which was confirmed empirically in several studies conducted in many countries. Sri Lanka has been encountering the problem of inflation for the recent years. But in Sri Lanka, this proposition has not yet been studied scientifically. Therefore, this study was going to fill this gap. The objective of this study was to test the impact of fiscal deficit on inflation in Sri Lanka. For this study, the annual time series data were used during the period of 1959 to 2013. The fiscal deficit, exchange rate, government expenditures and import outflow were used as independent variables while the Colombo consumer price index was considered as dependent variable. In addition, the multiple regressions model was used to test the impact of fiscal deficit on inflation. Based on the regression results, the fiscal deficit preserved the positive relationship with inflation in Sri Lanka at one percent significant level. Therefore, this study confirmed that the fiscal deficit accelerates the inflation in Sri Lanka.

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to assess the level of awareness and understanding of Takaful, an Islamic insurance scheme, as compared to traditional insurance among students of Islamic Studies in Sri Lanka. Despite the growing popularity of Takaful in the country, there is a notable lack of awareness and understanding of this concept among Sri Lankans. By conducting a survey among Sri Lankan students, this research seeks to determine the level of awareness and acceptance of Takaful, while identifying the factors that influence this perception. The research methodology employed was to collect data through questionnaires distributed to customers in Sri Lanka. The findings indicate that although there is a growing demand for Takaful in the country, a significant portion of the population is either unaware of its existence or hesitant to adopt it due to prevailing misconceptions. The study highlights the importance of increasing awareness and understanding of Takaful to encourage greater participation in this form of insurance. In addition, future research could examine the reasons for limited engagement with Takaful and explore strategies to promote insurance literacy and active participation in the industry.

Abstract: The objective of this study is to examine the long-run relationship between workers' remittances and economic growth in Sri Lanka using time series data spanning 1975–2021. Design/methodology/approach This study employed both exploratory data analysis (EDA) and inferential data analysis (IDA) tools. EDA includes the scatter plots, confidence ellipse with Kernel fit, whereas IDA covers unit root test, the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) bounds technique, the Granger's causality test, and impulse response function (IRF) analysis. Findings EDA confirms that workers' remittances have a positive relationship with per-capita gross domestic product (GDP). All variables used in this study are I(1). This study is exhibited that workers' remittances have a positive long-run relationship with per-capita GDP. The estimated coefficient of the error correction term shows that the dependent variable moves towards the long-run equilibrium path. Workers' remittances have a short-run and long-run causal relationship with per-capita GDP. The IRF analysis indicates that a one standard deviation shock to workers' remittances has initially an immediate significant positive impact on economic growth. Practical implications This study provides insights into workers' remittances in economic growth in Sri Lanka. Further, the findings of this study also provide evidence that workers' remittances increase economic growth. Originality/value Using ARDL bounds test, Granger's Causality test and IRF analysis for examining the relationship between workers' remittances and economic growth are the originality of this study.

Abstract: Economic cost of diabetes comprises of two components, viz. the direct cost and indirect cost. Doctor consultation fees, transportation cost, cost of blood and urine tests, and cost of medication constitute the direct cost. Short term morbidity and permanent disability due to diabetes result in inability to work, which accounts for the indirect cost. The objective of the study was to measure the economic cost of diabetic patients in Sainthamaruthu Divisional Secretariat Area of Ampara district in Sri Lanka. The research area of this study was Sainthamaruthu Township in Ampara district, where the burden of diabetes is higher than in other places. This study used primary and secondary data, both qualitative and quantitative. Primary data was collected through a questionnaire. Sample was selected through the stratified sampling method from 243 patients. 100 questionnaires were distributed through the random sampling method. For the data analysis this study used cross-sectional descriptive method. The direct cost and indirect cost of diabetes was estimated by cost of illness method. Analysis was performed through SPSS and Excel. This survey found that the monthly average direct cost per patient in Sainthamaruthu Divisional Secretariat Area was US $19. A breakdown gives monthly average doctor consultation fees of US $5.15, monthly average transportation cost of US $1.12, monthly average cost for urine test US $0.47, monthly average cost for blood test US $1.32, and monthly average medication cost of US $10.93. To these must be added monthly average indirect cost of US $68.94. This is made up of US $49.20 lost per patient per month for permanent disability and US $19.74 lost per patient per month for short term morbidity. Therefore, the monthly average economic cost amounted to US $87.93 per patient. At the same time, a higher level of economic cost is borne by the male and lower cost borne by the income group that earned between US $175 and US $350. 54 percent of patients depend on their families to meet their diabetes related expenditure. So the major part of the cost of diabetes care is imposed on the families of diabetic patients in the study area. And it just proves to be a big economic burden on them.

Abstract: The purpose of this study aims to investigate the nature of the relationship between workers' remittances and financial development (FD) in Sri Lanka for the period from 1975 to 2017. Design/methodology/approach This study used both the exploratory data analysis and inferential data analysis (IDA) techniques to test the objective of this study. The IDA technique consisted of the augmented Dickey–Fuller (ADF) and Phillips–Perron unit root tests, the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) bounds cointegration technique, the Granger causality test and impulse response function analysis. Findings The unit root test results show that the variables are in mixed order. The empirical results of cointegration confirm that workers' remittances have a beneficial long-run relationship with FD in Sri Lanka. The Granger causality test result indicates that there is a bidirectional relationship between workers' remittances and FD. The impulse response analysis indicates that a positive shock to workers' remittance has an immediate significant positive impact on the FD of up to 10 years. Practical implications The analytical techniques used in this study explain how workers' remittances induce FD in Sri Lanka. Originality/value This study fills an important gap in the academic literature by using newly developed ARDL bounds cointegration techniques in Sri Lanka, by using impulse response function analysis, and by studying the dynamic relationship between workers' remittances and FD using time series data.
